There are two factors at play here that are part of human nature. The bad one is that once somebody starts taking a handout it is very difficult to stop. The second is that a person's spirit is lifted by making his own way in the world. I believe those feelings are common to most people.
Romney should throw a twist on it and explain why we need more taxpayers and less tax takers. Way beyond the bottom line a guy that see federal taxes taken off his pay check immediately starts questioning how the government spends their money. If we had more people swearing about that deduction off their paycheck maybe more people would see that Obama is running triple the deficits we saw during the Bush Administration.
