AUBURN | A coordinated action against welfare fraud in Cayuga County Wednesday morning led to the arrests of more than 30 people accused of abusing the system.
Just after 8 a.m., more than 40 police officers and several officials from multiple departments took part in a countywide sweep to apprehend current and former Cayuga County residents on various welfare and public assistance fraud charges.
Cayuga County District Attorney's Office Detective Fred Whitsett said the operation went according to plan.
"It was just like any other sweep," he said. "It's always unexpected for the targets, but we were ready to go and were able to execute what we needed to do."
Auburn City Court Judge Michael McKeon addressed the courtroom, detailing a change of plans on this particular morning. He was matter of fact about the individuals apprehended many of which were first-time offenders with no criminal history.
"This is the beginning of a welfare fraud sweep," he said. "So let's get on with those individuals first."

FIXED!
NY??....Where is Auburn?
About 30 miles east of Syracuse. City of roughly 25k people.
Thanks!
Oops make that west of Syracuse. Got momentarily confused in these days of up is down and good is evil. Sorry.
Auburn is a prison town. It’s biggest employer - and biggest everything else - is a huge, 196-year-old prison that takes up about half the area of the town.
The problem is that over the years, prisoners who have served their sentences stay there once released. This as you can imagine leads to a variety of consequences.
The city that first used the Electric Chair.
As happens with so many stories these days: the city is menioned, but not the state. You’d think the byline would call it out, like back in the day when real reporting happened more frequently. Oh well.
At least 11 of the 33 were male (I started to say “men,” but a real man earns his money).
I see an IRS audit in Cuddeback’s future.
Wow. I interest you that much that you search for my name? Reposting news generates IRS audits now, or are you threatening one personally?
Whoah. I simply read the article and noted the name of the diligent individual who coordinated the sweep. The Feds don’t like it when dependency is diminished.
FTA: Cayuga County Legislature Chairman Steve Cuddeback was involved in putting the sweep together. It was a process that was two months in the making, he said.
Are you Cuddeback?
