A woman who was named Essex County, N.J.s Teacher of the Year in 2011 has been suspended from her job after being accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student.
US West Orange High School teacher Erica DePalo, 33, of Montclair, was charged Friday with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, the Essex County Prosecutors Office announced.

But what do you suggest be done about the problem? No one even knows this happens until its done. Due diligence in the hiring phase. Background checks. Psychological profiling tests. Simple observation. Last but not least, real action on the part of administrators, when red flags are noticed.
Now, little of that will honestly be implemented until parents start screaming bloody murder. Until they do, these sickos are just going to keep doing this.

Considering the size of our country, these incidents are pretty rare, 1 or 2 every few years. They get so much exposure, especially with the internet, that when it does happen, it seems likee it happens all the time and is at epidemin proportions. I can’t see anything like what you suggest actually getting implemented.

Stu, I've read at least two news stories a month of such incidents, at FR this year. Maybe if you had school age kids (like I do) those reports would stick better in your memory.
This actually IS an epidemic. Why do you think I suggested that Congress investigate this situation? It's out of control.
