Mike Flynn

At some point before 5pm CDT tomorrow, Akin will file papers to formally withdraw his name from the ballot. I realize today Akin was defiant and said he wasn't a "quitter." His supporters claim he will stay in the race because he views his candidacy as "providential", but this is just the bluster before the end. Everyone is entitled to 24 hours to try to right their ship, but Akin did nothing today to cauterize the wound. When Reince Priebus, Ann Coulter, NRSC and Tea Party Express are all united in saying you should quit, you've pretty much run out of options.
..............
After Akin withdraws the decision to name a replacement falls to the 15 members of the state GOP central committee. Speculation is currently focused on two candidates Akin defeated in the recent GOP primary; businessman Jim Brunner and former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman.
Brunner had the backing of many GOP insiders because of his ability to partially self-fund his race. Steelman had the backing of Sarah Palin. They both lost to Akin in large part because Sen. McCaskill ran a lot of ads "attacking" him for being too conservative. (Think of it as a Republican dog-whistle.) Among the two, Steelman probably has the edge as the GOP may want to put the Akin debacle to rest by nominating a woman. It is also expected that Palin would campaign aggressively for Steelman, which would be helpful as 2012 is turning out to be a base election....

It's a shame that the very thing that would probably make her the best choice is what keeps her from getting the support of the statewide party hack network.
bump
Which means nothing. He could have been a Donk plant years ago. He DID get 1.5 million from the Donks in the primaries. It’s hard to ignore that.
Yeah, Akin waiting years for this opportunity. Not buying it and where is your sources of Akin getting 1.5 million from the Dems. You sound just like the Dems!
Looks like this may be a good opportunity for Steelman.
There are still conflicting reports this afternoon whether Akin will drop out or not.
I personally think the way he stated his position on rape/abortion was clumsy but in some parts accurate.
He was trying to differentiate violent rape/assault from statutory rape. The latter goes on in certain ethnic communities where men over 21 have liaisons with girls under 17 (some as young as 12), which account for 50% of the births to single mothers in the A-A community. Vital statistics from all Health Departments in all states back this up.
Akin should have chosen his words more carefully. However, his opponents from left and right should be addressing the issue of out-of-wedlock births to 50% of young (and underage) black females.
I’m pretty sure that the stats in Missouri are much the same as in other states.
I hope it ends up being Steelman, I always thought a conservative woman was the best bet for beating McCaskill.
Sometimes you feel like a NUT. Sometimes you ARE!!!
Linda Chavez was supposed to do this in MD in 1986, but Mikulski is still there.
He is a total inside-the-beltway swell and the exact opposite of a Tea Party candidate.
What now? The most conservative candidate who can be elected *and* who can help Romney in MO.
Sounds good...sounds like he’s willing to take one for the team.Hopefully he’ll somehow be rewarded for this.
Rewarded??? What the hell for? Even IF he gets out, it’s probably too late now and he’s managed to drag Romney and the rest of the GOP down in flames with him.
I'm not sure that the damage is of the "all is lost" variety.I guess we'll see in the next few weeks. The Rats will very probably run with this even if he does get out...who knows how successful they'll be.
The Rats will very probably run with this even if he does get out...
I agree. They will hound Romney with this right through the election.
Maybe they’ll pick Bill Braski. Even though “Bill Braski was a son of a .....”
