Oops! Meant to say not 100% against him staying IN the race.
Do you have some names???
What he inarticulately stated was the reason for the ardent prolife position in the state of Missouri and why he and Ryan fought to change Medicaid rules regarding paying for abortions in the event of rape or incest.
Incidentally a physician at WUMC on the news last night said that pregnancy after a rape is rare.
Should we all get him to resign as well????
“Ardent prolife conservatives were appalled by what he said.”
I think they are the least that are appalled, I am NOT appalled, the guy is clearly pro life and believes in no exceptions as I did.
Anytime a truly pro life person is quizzed about whether or not they support exceptions for the life of mother (I do not feel well, I am stressed out), or rape or incest, it really is a red herring.
He should not have said that about the body shutting down/legit rape etc (I paraphrase), but his statements certainly did not appall me, seems to be a decent pro life fellow.
I was rooting for Sarah S for full disclosure.
Seems to me most of the left that are “appalled” are really only appalled by the fact that he believes abortion in ALL circumstances is wrong period, they only use the rape comment to vent their real hatred of pro life folks...that`s just how I see it
You are correct. Expounding about rape in any context during an election season is playing Russian Roulette with no empty chambers.
If you cannot see the damage this has done, there’s no convincing you. i am not going to go back through my twitter feed researching the prolife conservatives who tweeted about it because it’s pointless. Did you read about the woman who gave birth to her child conceived in rape? One can laud Akin’s principles and his position on this issue, but it has been LOST in the inferno caused by his ridiculously worded statement. Raise him and his PRINCIPLES UP, by all means and then lose the Senate, possibly the presidency and have Obama in charge of appointing baby killing sup ct justices who can insure that millions more babies are aborted for eons. It’s all about the principles, after all. forget pragmatism, exalt idealism.
On that we both agree.
Prolife conservatives are appalled NOT by the prolife stance behind the comment, but by the moronic statement, which everyone within seconds KNEW was going to cause this brouhaha and hence jeopardize the Senate which to that point had been within reach.
Sad to say, but when our candidate turns out to be an idiot spouting factually inaccurate biology, we walk away. He shot himself in the foot. He blew his chances. As a diehard Republican, I shuddered when I heard what he said. Still cringing I openly stated he needed to withdraw. Sometimes you just can’t fix a stupid remark. This is one.
You are denying that men aren’t falsely accused of rape? Or we should just avoiding saying it because it can be made into a political ad and therefore is dangerous ground to tread on?
Who makes these rules? What happens when we decide to control what we say and think to stay in conformance with the rules? Who wins in this this game of “rules”?
Why should it matter when it is said? What if he said it in May?
The Repubs coming back with a woman (and a good looking one at that), an outsider, and someone even more basically conservative would turn this mess into an advantage.
No offense, bro
agreed, I was just offering my 2 cents. Watching CNN/MSNBC go on and on about it is appalling to me, they are being dishonest about what really appalls them, what appalls them is the pro life position.
You forgot Margaret Truman. Just kidding :)
It would be great if he said it in May. May of next year.
well i am APPALLEd that you are watching CNN/MSNBC! LOL!! seriously, my husband will occasionally have it on just to see what that side is saying. i do not need to see it, bc it drives me insane to hear it.
Rev. Henrickson is right.
I have no personal animosity toward Sarah Steelman. She was my state senator before she was elected Missouri State Treasurer and I've interviewed her a number of times. The problems with Steelman include:
1) She placed third, not second, in the primary.
2) She lost in a nasty Republican primary for governor four years ago, and rightly or wrongly (I think wrongly) she got blamed for being so aggressive that she hurt the eventual Republican nominee and got a Democrat elected.
3) She's antagonized enough Republican Party leaders, not over “tea party” stuff but rather personal animosities, that they're circulating nasty personal rumors about her. Many and perhaps most can't be proven and may well not be true, but it indicates how much she's disliked, and not necessarily for reasons Freepers would appreciate. The problem is that if any of the rumors **DO** prove to be true, they'll torpedo her as a candidate. My guess is the rumors are being circulated precisely for that reason and may have no basis in fact at all, and indicate more about how she's thought of by Jefferson City insiders.
Bottom line — if the Republican Party leadership is looking for a “safe bet,” Steelman probably isn't it, but she does have the major advantages of having significant prior experience in government and being a well-known commodity. Brunner doesn't have either of those and I also have trouble seeing him “get the nod” in a selection made by Republican Party leadership.
I think we're probably looking at an entirely different candidate rather than either Brunner or Steelman if Akin drops out.
I’m thinking he’s on a mission to become a martyr, a modern day Joan of Arc.
I like to surf the dial in mornings that I am home, find out what the enemy is up to ie Joe Scarborough, he is enemy as far as I can see.
Then when I want to get more annoyed, I am a sucker for punishment, I switch to Sol.. O`brian on CNN, and listen to their phony in house Conservative.
CSPAN is good for a laugh also, Washington Journal, actually get some good Conservatives calling in, hosts are all liberal, but they do manage a few Conservatives on the line, if they can get through past the libs that call in on Conservative line.
Fox and Friends I watch, but once they get through the politics, they move on to jiberish entertainment etc
More than you wanted to know :)
Hi, XS. I had a sick, visceral response the moment I heard Akin utter those comments. His casual, callous remarks about a woman’s response to rape are deeply, deeply offensive to me and rouse an anger in me that I haven’t felt since the days Clinton refused to resign. And I’m about as conservative as they come.
I have the sense that one’s own life experience is the determining factor in how this is viewed as it puzzles me greatly how so many believe this is just an innocent “gaffe”.
the only time i find those bearable is when i am watching for the schadenfreude when we are winning like in 2010, and Scott Walker recall election. THAT i enjoy.
