Missouri Republican Todd Akin has begun moving toward ending his candidacy after his remarks on rape and abortion provoked a firestorm, a top Republican said.
"Akin is taking concrete steps to withdraw by tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.," a senior Republican told BuzzFeed, adding that Akin could still change his mind.
But a Republican close to Akin said his position hasn't changed: He's still in the race.
Tomorrow afternoon is an important deadline: If he files papers to end his candidacy in Jefferson City tomorrow he can end his candidacy unilaterally; after that, he would have to file an application in court.
Possible Republican replacements, the Republican source said, include three former senators: John Ashcroft, Jim Talent, and Kit Bond. Other names being mentioned include former Ambassador Ann Wagner, who is running for Akin's now-vacant seat; and Auditor Tom Schweich.
UPDATE: Former Missouri Sen. Jim Talent tells BuzzFeed that he is not running for Senate to replace Akin. He also declined to explicitly call for Akin to step aside, but backed NRSC Chair John Cornyn's cool statement that Akin make his decision quickly.
Hes got a decision to make and hes got to make it quickly, Talent added. Hes got to know the situation and he needs to sit down and make a personal decision.

I don’t care if they replace him with a cross-eyed, yellow dog. Just get him the hell outa there.
Victims of Death Camp Experiments were usually well-fed, to not skew results.
In most cases, especially in the altitude experiments, they were fed for three months with the same soldier’s rations the guards got.
The Nazi’s were particularly interested in simple sterilization methods for “the Lesser Races”. Look up the Schumann-Clauberg experiments.
“I pray Akins stays IN”
Akins is burnt toast. The facts simply do not matter at this point, he’s done. If he has said this while DEMOCRAT, he wouldn’t be, but there you have it.
It doesn’t matter if he’s right on the facts.
It doesn’t matter if it was only one mistake.
It doesn’t matter if he’s truly sorry.
It doesn’t matter if everyone is mis-construing his comment.
The ONLY thing that matters is that his continued presence in the race jeopardizes Republicans’ ability to re-take the Senate and RR’s chances as well. There is nothing Akin can do to change that political reality. He has to get out and he will if he is capable of acting in accordance with the principles he espouses.
This dumbbell now has the chance to redeem himself somewhat by showing a little grace under pressure by bowing out. Will he go down as a hero by doing the right thing for the cause? Or will he demonstrate a level of selfishness that would make Lisa Murkowski proud.
Tom Schweich isn’t a coot.
So he can get out after the deadline, if he goes to the courts.
That’s a minor relief in case he makes a foolish selfish choice tomorrow.
Thank you tcrlaf - I will see what I can find to read about that. I appreciate the correction.
Nonetheless, the claim he main was scientifically bogus and it did a lot to damage our cause.
“Pregnancy may result from rape. The rate varies between settings and depends particularly on the extent to which non-barrier contraceptives are being used. A study of adolescents in Ethiopia found that among those who reported being raped, 17% became pregnant after the rape,[3] a figure which is similar to the 1518% reported by rape crisis centres in Mexico.[4][5]
A longitudinal study in the United States of over 4000 women followed for 3 years found that the national rape related pregnancy rate was 5.0% per rape among victims aged 1245 years, producing over 32 000 pregnancies nationally among women from rape each year.[6]”

You can’t just say “Rape”, you have to define it.
Is it “RAPE” Rape, or stranger rape, as defined by Whoopi Goldberg while defending Roman Polanski’s pedophelia?
Is it Marital rape?
is it consensual Statutory rape? (Not really “Rape” rape, per Whoppi Goldberg and the media defending Roman Polanski.
This election can’t come fast enough for me... I’m strangling on PC Speak!
Makes you wonder if this is a set-up to get somebody on the ballot who wasn’t going to survive a primary challenge.
Step One: Win the primary.
Step Two: Say something afterwards that is extremely controversial and poorly-stated.
Step Three: Step down so some retread can run without a Tea Party challenge.
Can’t really imagine The Stupid Party being that clever. If these were Democrats though, it would make sense but then if these were Democrats, everyone would circle the wagons and defend the idiot comment otherwise Obama and Biden would already be out of a job.
funny how really stupid statements are a prerequisite for Dhimmicrat candidates...
(think any number of Dhimmis from Sheila Jackson Lees Mars Rover finding the flag Neil Armstrong planted on the moon...to just about anything Biden has said...)
Doesn’t matter if they planned it or not. The oligarchs do not like the people selecting their own leaders. They want them to be appointed by themselves. And now’s their chance!
If I read his bio and speeches correctly he believes he’s on a personal divine mission. If that’s anywhere near true then I think he’ll stay in. If he does then The GOP better hope Linda McMahon can buy the Conn. seat because they won’t be winning Missouri.

Nice pic! Should be captioned...
“Now, why wouldn’t you want to give me your vote :)”
He absolutely needs to step down. My sister and I are both very conservative, but he completely alienated us with his asinine statement. He is not only factually wrong, but politically tone deaf. I voted for Sarah, and wish the rest of Missouri had followed suit.
He didn’t have the sense to articulate the position that unborn children should not pay for the crimes of their fathers with their lives. This is a reasonable position, that no unborn child is deserving of death. He could have even stated rape victims comprise a very small percentage of abortions in America. This is a fact, backed up by statistics.
However, stating a “legitimately” raped woman can “shut down” a pregnancy is completely unsupportable by fact. I can’t believe there are actually men on this site that support such nonsense. I don’t know why I feel the need to educate the ignorant, but here goes. True, not a huge percentage of raped women become pregnant, for the following reasons:
1. They are past child bearing years.
2. They are on oral contraceptives.
3. They are not ovulating at that moment in time.
4. They took post-rape measures at a hospital.
However, for the remainder of these women, a pregnancy is very likely. If a woman is ovulating, she probably will get pregnant. Even if I grant you the possibility that stress might prevent ovulation, if a woman has already begun ovulation, this will not matter. The body makes no “magical” distinction, and biology takes over.
The woman most likely to get pregnant during a rape is a woman who is not on oral contraceptives and who is morally opposed to the morning after pill.
It’s good to have Rush back. As soon as Akin goes, it’s time to start hammering the Bill Clinton angle of this controversy. Are Juanita, Kathleen, and Paula “legitimate” in the eyes of the Dems?
Appreciated your post at 83 (and Fishtalk’s at 79) also.
Pinging to 93. “Studies were by Allied forces.” That is mentioned to dispell another post indicating Nazi experimentation subjects were well fed. I was doubtful the Nazi’s did any type of rape/conception studies— they were more interested in sterilization.
As an aside, pregnancies in the death camps were compulsorily terminated, the babies aborted, whether the result of rape or if the woman arrived there having already conceived. Pregnancy was often a death sentence for the mother, as well.
Of course, pregnancies resulting from the “legitimate rape” of women who had been sterilized in the camps were rare.
(Yes, the last sentence was sarcasm.)
