Missouri GOP Senate Candidate should withdraw from Race Now (Vanity)
August 19, 2012 | pistolpackinpapa

Congressman Todd Aikin, the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from Missouri should withdraw from the Missouri Senate Race immediately over his stupid statement he made today re: "legitimate rape". To not do so, will assure six more years for Claire McKaskill in the U.S. Senate. What he said, in essence, when asked about abortion, was that a "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy. Now, that comment is going viral over the internet.

I witnessed, first-hand, in 1990 how a "rape gaffe" by GOP candidate for Governor of Texas, Clayton Williams, who had a wide lead in the polls at the time, caused him to lose the Governor's Office to Ann Richards; in GOP-Red Texas.

Many of us Conservatives understand what he was saying and are in agreement. But, it was a stupid thing to say. For the sake of this Election and control of the U.S. Senate, Aikin should withdraw immediately or "Turn out the lights; the party's over.

I know that. He was right, but it was political suicide. Dude is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Another Sharron Angle and Christine O’Donnell.

You got anything to base your question on besides ignorance?

Todd Akin is a good conservative. He served the 2nd District of Missouri very well. He will be a good Senator.

Uh....there’s one little hurdle he has to clear first and it’s called an Election on Nov. 6. And, I’m betting now, he will not clear that hurdle. I’m sick to my stomach over this because I loathe Claire McKaskill and now we’re gonna be stuck with her for 6 more years. Just damn!!!

He obviously trying to say that if it is a real rape and not a case of someone accusing someone of Rape when they were willing accomplishes, and then changed their mind or felt spiteful.

His premise is pretty lame though- For sure. He seems to be saying that a woman’s emotional state at the time of sex has a bearing on if she gets pregnant or not.

But I think that people here are trying to act like this is something it is not. You are acting like people from DU. Use your brains a little.

A candidate in 2002 named John Cooksey trying to oppose the LA liberal Mary Landrieu made a remark about Islamic turbans, and he never recovered.

With an 11 point lead all Aikin had to do was play a little rope a dope until November. But it looks like he decided to change course and go the dope on a rope route with this latest bonehead statement.

“I think he mis-spoke. It’s clear he was referring to an actual rape and not a mere claim of rape just so a woman can get an abortion.”

Ding- We have a winner. Now if just 10% of the population here could just figure out that he meant it somewhere along these lines. Real verses Falsely claimed. The people here are doing DU’s work for them.

He is not wrong. Rape rarely results in pregnancy.

He said

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
You want to ask him for his scientific references for that bonehead statement? As a poster above said, he should have stated his position and shut up, instead of claiming this medically ridiculous statement. Plus, any woman who was raped and did get pregnant will see it as a terrible insult - that he's saying her rape was not legitimately rape. Wanna guess how that will go over?

Welcome to your final days at Free Republic. You won’t be here much longer. You should be more discreet when you troll opposition websites. Your desperation is showing, Claire.

I’m using my brain and I’m using it logically. The guy made a fatal error politically. Read some of the comments on here buy people who are “using their brain” like the prosecutor who has prosecuted numerous rapist. (See Post #10)

Would you care to bet some money on this Election? I guarantee you that if he does not withdraw from the race, Claire McKaskill will win. How much you wanna bet? I wonder if you would be taking this in such stride if your wife or daughter had ever been raped.

Excuse me, but I say both Angle and O’Donnell would make fine representatives.

For real.

“I wonder if you would be taking this in such stride if your wife or daughter had ever been raped.”

It would have nothing to do with the quote that is being attributed to him since it in no way states that he agrees with or condones rape. Your problem is that you are too emotional to stand back and rationally look for some other intended meaning.

I used to be on the Speakers Bureau for Right to Life. I am sure by “legitimate rape” he meant forcible rape, not including date or statutory rape. When I spoke pregnancy results for forcible rape were listed as .5 to 5% depending on the year and the group compiling the data.
The .5 stat was IIRC 1988 and was a Guttmacher poll of women who had had abortions. .5 listed rape or incest as the reason.
Also IIRC the 5% figure was an extrapolation by Dr Wilke based on many factors.
Akin was correct but danged clumsy in the delivery. :(

“Your problem is that you are too emotional to stand back and rationally look for some other intended meaning.”

And the general electorate is? Political campaigns are not about the general electorate rationally parsing words looking for intended meanings, They are about optics and emotions. A candidate cannot juxtapose the words “legitimate rape” whatever the intended meaning may be and not expect to be soundbited into political oblivion. Now wait for the deluge from the media in 4 3 2 1 ....

To: Uncle Chip; All
TO: All of you who called me a troll for posting this:
Stop and think about it. If I was a DU troll, I would not be asking for Todd Aikin to step aside. I'd be rejoicing with the Commie DemocRATS over this because they know he has given the Election to Claire "Her Thighness" McKaskill. I'm very concerned because if we lose Missouri, it will be very difficult for us to take back the Senate. This race was a given. I've been through fatal political errors like this before. I've been working for Conservatives and Conservative causes since 1980 and Ronald Reagan. So, think what you want of me. I know in my heart that I'm right; I've seen this too many times. Just wait until McKaskill ads on this start running. The average American voter is NOT an intelligent voter. Most of them are so dumb they shouldn't even be allowed to vote. That said........

I'm calling the Republican Party of Missouri tomorrow (573-636-3146) and talking to them about this. AIKINS NEEDS TO GO WHILE THERE IS TIME TO REPLACE HIM WITH SARAH STEELMAN AND GET HER NAME ON THE BALLOT.
