I think he mis-spoke. It’s clear he was referring to an actual rape and not a mere claim of rape just so a woman can get an abortion.
What about George Allen? Most people seem to think he's a good conservative and a good candidate, but he got attacked for one word that he misused. Is it reasonable to expect a candidate to NEVER make a gaffe? Obama, Biden, Palin and McCain all made gaffes. The answer is not to constantly be on the defensive. We have to be on the OFFENSIVE, brush off the attacks and smears quickly, and explain clearly why the benefits we will bring to the country FAR OUTWEIGH the negatives of misspeaking one word. We simply cannot prevent these gaffes from happening and we cannot replace a candidate every time they happen. If we stand on principle, which includes not tossing a candidate who we believe represents our values to the side because they make one trivial mistake (despite the liberals trying to claim it's not trivial), then that goes a long way to showing that we're the better candidate in any race. If you run a good campaign, it should be able to survive one gaffe that has nothing to do with supporting a bad policy or flip-flopping.
That is not the point. Akin should STFU regarding any specificity on this issue; there are no new pro-life or pro-abortion votes to be mined. People who vote on this issue know whom to support.
This gaffe, from what I am told, is the third in a week since the primary. The McCaskill people and MSM will hold off the nuclear weapons until the ballot deadline passes.
Akin cannot self-fund this race; and no one is going to write him checks now.
48 hrs to turn this around, but my guess is that he’s gone by Thursday. This guy is undisciplined and is unready for the Big Leagues.
This poor judgement and self-inflicted wound is beyond comprehension.
??????????
Todd Aiken was hand-picked by Claire McCaskill and the liberal St. Louis Post Dispatch to be the Republican nominee.
both are laughing their heads off now.
Todd Akin was basically got the nomination because Clare McCaskill and the liberal St. Louis Post Dispatch thought he was a lightweight who could be beaten easily. The guy just isn’t very bright . .reminds me of Sharron Angle who somehow managed to lose to Harry Reid.
That’s exactly right. His opponent is tanking and HAS been tanking. They’re trying to drive the angry mob who supports her to rally around women’s issues.
Aiken said he misspoke. Apologized. Horse died on other side of track.
Todd Akin is a good conservative. He served the 2nd District of Missouri very well. He will be a good Senator.
Maybe, but a lot of those "Dumb sluts" who were about to cross over might choose to stay where they are now.

“He is not wrong.
Rape rarely results in pregnancy.”
Academically he is correct. But politically he made a fatal mistake in making the academic argument at all during the campaign particularly when his opponent and the DNC shows up on the hustings with a woman pregnant from a forcible rape. It only takes one to establish the visual for the voters and spark their emotions. In campaign politics, sometimes you want to skip some battles in favor of winning the war.
Yup - cause McCaskell has never said anything offensive or stupid....
Exactly. He can vote pro-life all he wants AFTER he is elected.
Getting into this issue in such specificity demonstrates incredibly poor judgment.
I’m not impressed with this guy. Three gaffes in a week and this is an easy pick-up if he would just shut up.
She wanted to run against him, not Brunner.
Brunner isn't a professional politician like Akin. He actually has principles and believes the things he says.
Akin never had any single female votes. The danger is now he will lose MARRIED female votes, even Catholics.
This is very possibly a fatal self-inflicted wound. The nation may be evolving to pro-life, but very, very few people oppose abortion in the case of rape. It is viewed as EXTREME by the overwhelming majority of Americans - of both sexes.
This is one of the most brain-dead political moves I’ve seen in several years.
“What I said is the meat of issue. Shameless opportunists hiding behind fake outrage and sissy-like fatalism in an effort to get a more preferred losing candidate shoved in.”
Thank you for the complement... I dont remember calling you a moron?
What you said may well be true but in real life politics.... also irrelevant...
Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly,
successful politicians gotta lie.
(at least not be too honest)
And it’s true...
I’ve NEVER praised any Democrats. You call me a troll which shows that you don’t know me. I’ve been working for Conservatives and Conservative causes since Ronald Reagan and 1980. I just wish you could see my resume, but, you never will. You’re just angry because I nailed you as the mean-spirited, religious hypocrite that you are. Jesus and your Pastor must be so proud of you. Here’s a new tagline for you “Brother” cripplecreek: “And in that day, many will say unto me Lord, Lord....and then will I profess unto them, depart from me; I never knew you, you workers of iniquity.” (Matthew 7:22-23)
HAVE A NICE ETERNITY!!!
You aren’t impressing or intimidating me troll boy. I’m on to you and I don’t really care how many biblical quotes you Google.
While Biden could get away with this, as a Republican Aikin just brought Claire McCaskill back from the political dead.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
There's your "War on Women" talking-point, front and center.
Where did you hear that about the “Roe” baby? I thought she was never identified.
