Democrats moved to make same-sex marriage a part of their party platform, placing language that would declare a right for gay men and lesbians to marry on track for approval by the partys leadership.
Party officials met over the weekend in Minneapolis and approved the first step in the platform-amending process. In two weeks, the entire platform committee will vote on the matter at a meeting scheduled in Detroit. Then, if approved as expected, it would move on to convention delegates in Charlotte, N.C., for final approval in September.
According to Democrats who were briefed on the vote in Minneapolis, there was no objection when the issue came up. Though the language that was voted on still could be revised, party officials do not anticipate any major obstacles going forward.
The platform language approved over the weekend also included a condemnation of the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing legal same-sex marriages.

I thought marriage laws varied by state. How can the DNC push for federalizing marriage laws?
The libertarians have had a pro-homosexual platform all along.
I already thought it was.
Now when I say that the Democrats are a bunch of fags they can’t really complain about it, can they?
They are working over time to steal the “stupid party” moniker from the Republicans.
A list needs to be put out of every Democrat that votes for this and against it. If they don’t want to get re-elected, then let them vote for it.
“A right for gay men and lesbians to marry”- that’ll be a dull honeymoon.
Simple. Barry will just promise that he'll override the states by issuing an executive order.
If a gay man and a lesbian want to get married nothing
should stand in their way...
It’s a calculated political risk which isn’t totally insane.
The thought is probably:
1) Those opposed to Gay marriage are concentrated in states they’ll lose anyway, and/or are already voting Republican and couldn’t be persuaded otherwise anyway.
2) Despite grumblings they won’t lose any of the Black vote from this.
3) They get more young voters to turn out in support.
4) They win over independents/moderates/undecideds in swing states with it.
That’s it Democrats, Go after guns, ammo, and the Christian marriage. We’ll trade the rest of the population for those who support what you want. Just one suggestion: Please make a big deal out of your party being the party of genocide over the unborn too.
Gotta love it when you opponent does all the heavy lifting for you.
What was it that Gollum’s brother said —
“It’s the economy, stupid”
Anything to divert attention to the total complete failure of Zer0’s reign!!
Your reasoning isn’t all that unreasoned, but I’m not convinced the Independents are going to glom on to Obama as they did in 2008.
The luster is off this road apple.
It’s a dirty little secret, but even Democrats like guns. Even Democrats aren’t all that crazy over the destruction of the family unit. Some are. Many aren’t.
This guy and his party are alienating people as fast as they can.
Oh I think Obama is going to lose in November, and even if this platform plank helps a little bit, it won’t be enough to overcome everything else.
Obviously, from, say, 2020 into the future, gay marriage is a plank that will help them win elections; it’s debatable whether you include it in 2012 and 2016.
Thanks Strategerist. In large part that depends on the idiots we nominate too. We’ll see how it plays out. I can see reason for you to adopt that theory.
“declare a right for gay men and lesbians to marry....”
What is to keep gay men from marrying lesbians right now?
