Two Bexar County K-9s dead after night left inside hot cruiser

SAN ANTONIO -- The Bexar County Sheriff's Department says two of its K-9s have died after they were left inside a patrol vehicle overnight.

According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, the dogs were "inadvertently" left inside the vehicle overnight and died from apparent heat exposure.

How the hell does someone "inadvertently" forget about 2 large dogs like that? Didn't they notice the dogs kennel was empty? Crap like this really pisses me off. Every summer idiots leave their dogs in their sweltering vehicles. What a horrible, torturous death for those poor dogs. That cop needs a baseball bat up side his head.

What consequence would result from an officer locking a partner in a cruiser in summer heat until he died? Manslaughter at least.

As a police officer who works at a department with a K-9 officer I agree on all those assessments.
The officer(s) responsible need to be given the harshest punishments.....experience the harshest consequences. I truly hope that happens......but unfortunately I doubt it will.
I find it incredulous that a department could afford 2 K-9's yet couldn't afford the automatic thermometer system that should should be installed in all K-9 cruisers. Our K-9 cruiser has it, it constantly monitors the temperature and if it gets too hot it sends an alarm to the police officer, if the officer doesn't respond it pops the door.
Nonetheless, what a tragic unnecessary pair of deaths that are truly nothing short of murder, due to criminal negligence.

Seems like he considered the dogs as nothing more than a piece of equipment,,,like his badge or nightstick. And at the end, those poor dogs were probably calling out to their “friend” for help.

Hmm, never heard that put in quite the same language. I understand your particular feelings for the animals, and I appreciate the bond that forms between the officer and his dog. But that doesn't change the fact that this is a dog, not a human.

killing

with malice aforethought.

I think it is dangerous to use terms that inflame or incite those in an attempt to manipulate the act and the punishment that may be meted out.

It is a shame when two valuable resources of law enforcement are lost. I am saddened when a expensive police helicopter is lost or damaged in a crash. But murder? IMHO, this is not a murder. It is a loss of a valuable resource, and should be addressed and punished appropriately.

The last time I checked a "police helicopter" doesn't learn, think, feel pain, breath, eat, drink.....etc. So you're equation of one "tool" to the other is most definitley your "opinion". But then again, those are the traits that pro-choice people like to say babies in the womb don't have either.
