Buford, Ga. – There was no mistaking the man who walked through the glass doors of the hotel complex on the shores of Lake Lanier.
The trademark shock of white hair remains neatly groomed. The hawk-like nose still juts out over a tight jaw. The eyes are clear and bright. But the stride is gone. Zell Miller walks gingerly now, always with a cane.
The former governor and U.S. senator describes himself as an 80-year-old man with 100-year-old legs. “I very, very seldom go anywhere,” Miller said in an interview.
Miller’s appearance on Friday was a rare return to a world he once commanded. He’d come down from the hills of Young Harris as the featured attraction at a fundraiser for state Rep. Doug Collins of Gainesville, now a Republican candidate in the 9th District congressional race.
Miller's grandson, Bryan Miller, is Collins’ campaign manager. “Of course, he brought his grandfather with him, but I would have been there anyway,” the former governor said. “My grandmother was a Collins out of Union County. And I was impressed by what a good legislator [Doug Collins] made. “I felt I had a mountain relationship with him.”

I love Miller. No qualms about telling you exactly what he thinks of you. Hope he doesn’t change too much.
I’ll never forget this classic line from his 2004 RNC convention speech:
“U.S. forces armed with what? Spit balls?”

The man LOVED his country. He NEVER had a chance with the Democrats.
His fellow Georgia Democrat, Jimmy Carter, said that Zell was disloyal. Zell had the audacity to speak to the GOP convention, which to Jimmy overrides anything else, apparently.
This particular issue with Jimmy Carter highlights what happens a lot in politics. Rather than talk about what Zell Miller stands for, or the issues he speaks of, people like Jimmy Carter refuse to discuss that. Instead, they indict him for not being a good Democrat.
Zell Miller is a good man. I wish there were more like him in politics today.

Sorry, but it ended. It took a long time for most Southern voters to realize the political sea change, but they have now. Prior to the past 20 year, a Republican was looked at as a an extremist (aka, Klan), while (the proper) Democrats were looked at as carriers of conservative values. But all that changed, and now to be a Democrat means that you answer to Pelosi, as Bart Stupak found out (look him up).

Miller came from a time when Democrats were patriots. Had he not left the Senate when he did, he would not have survived.
He wasn’t perfect, but he did have the courage to stabs up for what GE believed and to hell with the party line
Zell Miller was an excellent governor, despite his party affiliation. He’s fondly remembered here in GA as representing our interests and defending our rights. The Peach State remembers - old times here are not forgotten.
The only changes he has made; are his ‘right’ turns. As Governor; he lived ‘down the street’. . .Wished him well, then; wish him the best now.
