I think he needed a larger caliber to prevent them from ever having a recidivism problem.

Next time use both hands and the sights, fire fewer shots, and take them both out permanently!
It enrages me that he shoots the two of them, and they can both be bailed out, and one of them already is. Next time, he should be using frangible rounds that have more stopping power. A .40 caliber or a .45 would have much more recidivism reduction power.

The other potential problem is that he kept shooting after they began to flee.
No longer a threat = no longer able to use lethal force.
He would have to argue that he feared they would regroup and return, a shaky case to make.
So I cannot applaud him very much, he started out well, but the whole incident went down hill when he failed to AIM properly.
Never shoot to wound, always shoot to end the threat in as decisive a manner as possible.
I would not be surprised if he ends up being charged in the current Flori-duh/Obama DOJ liberal foaming at the mouth pogrom against CCW and “Stand your ground”.
In this respect the video going “Viral” may work against him!
Expect to see it used as a fund raising and hand-wringing plea for “gun-control” tool by certain seditionist elements.
He will be vilified as a “Vigilante” at any moment, probably already has been.
Too bad this did not happen in Texas. We love vigilantes in cases like this.
The old man did not know if that guy he shot outside was going to get up and start shooting and/or come back in. He made sure he did not come back in and that the little thug ran away with his pal. If he wanted to, he could have chased them down the street shooting, but he did not want to over do it figuring the danger was mitigated. :)
Gun owners are going to have to do jury nullification if the elite try to railroad and nitpick people defending themselves and others. In elections, we can dispose of dirty judges and politicans who don’t respect self defense.

First and foremost, he brought a gun to a gunfight.
The “nothing smaller than a 4 crowd (self included) may complain, but he had a gun, he could shoot it (and apparently hit), and frankly pistol calibers are notoriously bad fight stoppers.
Grandpa SHEEPDOG did some things that gave him and edge though (with age, wisdom...).

Waited till zippy the hoody was within good pistol range but looking away (only real close call was as zippy was swinging his jammies around).
Moved after the draw (gun was out) in a straight line
got low as zippy was swinging back.

HE KEPT MOVING TO THE FIGHT. He stayed engaged until the threat was no longer a threat. Technique discussions aside, he won the fight by being the better MAN!
