Get rid of the right to bear arms (NYT article on revising the Constitution)

I came of age when the word “drive-by” entered the American lexicon. By high school graduation, I lost one cousin to gun violence and another was incarcerated for a gun crime. I know many harmed by guns and even more who feared the possibility. I always wonder if, but for the Second Amendment, there would be a more radical commitment to compromise and peacefully working through easy and difficult issues. In writing the Second Amendment, the Framers didn't envision the kind of gun toting that is permitted across this country today.... I am not naïve enough to believe that doing away with the Second Amendment would do away with gun violence, but I know firsthand the impact of guns and gun shots on children. This nation was constructed and reconstructed in the aftermath of violent and bloody conflicts. Still, the Framers believed that not only the Constitution, but also the peaceful way the document was created, would penetrate the Americans' minds and change they engaged. The Constitution would be the only weapon needed unless there was an external enemy.

The problems with the Bill of Rights is the mistaken belief that the ONLY rights people have are listed, and then they are purposefully misread. Does anyone in their right mind believe our God-given rights come from a piece of paper? Why is it such a strange notion to libs that man should be able to defend his life with force if necessary?

That comes under the “3 generations rule” for immigrants.

The initial wave of immigrants are “old world”, want to work at any job and not make waves.

The second generation are the problem, as they are neither “old world” or integrated Americans yet. Consistently, these are the ones that form gangs and Mafias, the latter being hold overs from old world revolutionary or independence movements that gravitated into organized crime.

The third generation, however, are fully integrated Americans who for the most part want to leave their ethnic community and succeed elsewhere. From the second to the third generation, crime plummets to the “permanent par”, or under, with everyone else.

Mexican immigrants are a half-exception to the rule, as they did not come to the US in a single wave, but over an extended period of time, so all three generations can coexist along with the illegal aliens who are non-integrated “pure Mexicans” who do not want American citizenship or integration.

But the tremendous difference between slave descended black Americans, and immigrant blacks from Africa is striking, as the immigrant blacks follow the more typical immigrant pattern, do not have and do not want the baggage of SD black Americans, and even try to not associate with them.

However, the immigrant blacks are combined with the SD blacks in demographic statistics, which is concealing the declining numbers of SD blacks who are “self exterminating”, with ever increasing numbers of immigrants. This makes the “black” ethnic group to appear to be demographically stable.

The Framers knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that most American's at that point in time owned at least one gun. Percentage wise...was probably more than today.

Despite THAT...the Framers passed the 2nd...for other reasons. Reasons that are TOTALLY LOST on Melynda Price.

Maybe if her friends and family weren't gang banging...they wouldn't have been shot!

Barrels, eh? But you can still bring over the other parts?

Importation aside, is a barrel by itself considered to be an NFA item? It seems like a lot of money is just waiting to be made by someone with the right equipment. When I was a boy my best friend's dad made wildcat Mauser barrels in a basement shop. He made enought money that he was able to quit his day job. They were probabaly more complicated (or at least more exacting) than PKM barrels.

Be careful. That is actionable defamation unless true, and there is no Google evidence to support your allegation.

No way in hell would there ever be thirty eight states voting to end the Second Amendment. And if New York and California try to force the issue then they’ll discover why it was created in the first place.

The person who wrote this editorial is allegedly a 'history professor', yet she has no clue as to the history of how the USA came into existence. Or why we have a 2nd Amendment and why it is NUMBER FREAKING TWO out of the first ten amendments. In fact this letter to the editor of hers shows that she's a complete idiot (I pity her students).

Ergo, the only conclusion one can reach is that she bought her 'History Degree', prolly from the same place Obama bought his degree from Columbia -- and his phony Social Security Card.

(And the same place where 'Pedro' gets all his forged documents two days after sneaking into the USA.)

They don’t understand that the 2nd Amendment was written to provide a way for citizens to protect themselves from the lawless, from invading armies, AND from an overreaching, tyrannical government.

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is a Natural Right, whose provenance is described in the Declaration of Independence.

Idiots can fulminate about "the Second Amendment" all day long, but since we were born free men and women, we have the Creator-given Right to have guns.

I'm sorry Melynda didn't learn this in all her years of schooling.

Do we have some experts in the history of the Second Amendment here on Free Republic who can help make a credible case on her blog for the traditional view of the Second Amendment? I'm certainly pro-Second-Amendment, but it's not my area of historical expertise.

The Second Amendment restrains the government from infringing on your unalienable Right to defend yourself.
