Get rid of the right to bear arms (NYT article on revising the Constitution)
The New York Times ^ | 7/8/2012 | Melynda Price

Posted on 07/09/2012 5:30:24 AM PDT by darrellmaurina

I came of age when the word “drive-by” entered the American lexicon. By high school graduation, I lost one cousin to gun violence and another was incarcerated for a gun crime. I know many harmed by guns and even more who feared the possibility. I always wonder if, but for the Second Amendment, there would be a more radical commitment to compromise and peacefully working through easy and difficult issues. In writing the Second Amendment, the Framers didn't envision the kind of gun toting that is permitted across this country today.... I am not naïve enough to believe that doing away with the Second Amendment would do away with gun violence, but I know firsthand the impact of guns and gun shots on children. This nation was constructed and reconstructed in the aftermath of violent and bloody conflicts. Still, the Framers believed that not only the Constitution, but also the peaceful way the document was created, would penetrate the Americans' minds and change they engaged. The Constitution would be the only weapon needed unless there was an external enemy.

I can't agree.

Look at the history of inner-city gun violence in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Italian-American ghettos; my Italian forebears were attacked for being ethnically predisposed to violent crime, and in the early days it was mostly Italians against Italians, not Italians against others.

Today, look at the rising problem of Hispanic gun violence.

Wickedness and lawlessness know no color.

Well, Ms. Price, where do you live, in metro NYC where guns are all but illegal and only criminals have guns?
The gun-grabbers try to perpetuate the delusion that if all guns are removed from the US, then there will be none to be smuggled into areas like metro NYC.

They are able to make headway pushing that delusion because they control the government schools and the propaganda arm of the DNC known as "the media".

There is NO WAY a 6 year old wrote that and drew the cartoon. The concepts (striking through the NRA symbol) and making the connection between “bad” and “good” dependent upon gun ownership, are well beyond the mental abilities of even the most gifted 6 yr old.

I find it astonishing so much ignorance and stupidity can be crammed into a single article.

On the other hand, this is the New York Times and the writer is Melynda Price who, after all is said and done, is simply another Plantation Black obviously edumacated in the publik skool cystimz by equally ignorant (or anti-American?) "teachers" and pickled in "public interest" law ideology and sponsored by the Ford Foundation.

Affirmative Action rooters (and perhaps Simon Legree) would be proud of her bootlicking embrace of tyranny and Liberal causes (but, I repeat myself). However, Americans interested in the truth should be ashamed!

That's what places like Free Republic are for.

Gun laws are not my area of expertise. We all have to specialize and this is a cause I support but on which I am not an expert.

Other people here are experts and I suspect someone will recognize the sentences if they were printed elsewhere before. Let's find the article if it exists.

"Maylinda" lost one cousin to "gun violence" (shot by a gang banger, shot by police, or shot by a victim in self defense, she does not mention) and another is "incarcerated". That tells me all I need to know about Maylinda.

Her main concern appears to be a worry that her cousins may risk being "Trayvoned" if they engage in violence.

...The age of the Drive By indeed...It has become apparent that taking “Pot Shots” at the Constitution of the United States has now become fashionable by certain so called journalists within our own borders. Freedom of speech does grant such journalistic license , however , the writer must always keep in mind that countless millions of Americans have pledged their life to defend this grand document and that it is also the duty of all citizens to protect it as well.
The”drive by”was imported into this nation by those which have no allegiance to the Constitution nor to the American flag which many consider to be a living entity as well.
Great care and diligence must always be exercised when attempting to equate personal loss and blame, however, prudence and sound logic dictate that treading upon that which gives you liberty is never wholesome nor wise and often times viewed as bigotry, which is repugnant to every race and creed within the confines of this great nation...and after all , why do I need a gun when I got “Old Wrist Breaker”.

Many decades of getting away with laws that violate the 2nd amendment and individual freedom are now threatened by a recent, tepid US Supreme Court decision and popular resistance to those laws. Consequently, the hard left is now taking a more aggressive approach.

I don’t think freedom-loving people can coexist with the hard left—they want a soviet-style central planning and control system and freedom-loving people want, simply, the combined freedom and responsibility we have and must continue to fight to achieve. At some point, we must decide whether to argue with the leftists or let them formalize their ideology into a defined, walled system complete with their own centralized, tax and spend economy and of-the-moment, emotion-based constitution. Freedom-loving people cannot wait forever for a lifting of the chains of socialism.

If we followed Singapore’s example and made the commission of a crime with a deadly weapon a mandatory capital offense, we would solve many problems.

Looks like the final push is on. Kind of funny in a way, all the propaganda that was tried to turn public opinion against guns in the last 12 months has failed to gain traction. Yet they are still going to push the ban through.

Makes me wonder if we aren't really gumming up the schedule.

...the impact of guns and gun shots on children.
You know liberals are desperate and grasping when they pull out the "it's for the children" playbook.

You know, the First Amendment has caused a LOT of problems. Really, we should repeal that, then nobody could talk bad about Obama or anything else the Leftists find offensive.

She comes from a class and mindset that says you are a powerless victim. So objects become evil, not the the persons using those objects to commit evil.

If you look at the person committing the act as the independent variable, you have to start asking some hard questions. Questions that lead to places most today don't want to admit to, so it is easier to blame the object.

That is why we have such things as gun control and soda bans. We, as a society, refuse to hold people responsible for the choices they make. We wish to be children forever.

The correct question should “Why did the Irish and Italians slow down their in fighting, and why didn't the African Americans?”

I have been to places where the local mob playing whack a mole with each is considered a spectator sport. By in large, they don't operate on the same depths of the local “bad” part of town.

They stopped because they found a way to be accepted into the society at large, and the means to grow. What happened to African Americans is that those choices were either not made, or not available.

Melynda J. Price is an associate professor of law at U Kentucky, whose "research focuses on race, gender and citizenship, the politics of punishment and the role of law in the politics of race and ethnicity in the U.S. and at its borders".

No mention as to whether she passed her bar exam before becoming a professor.

The time for talking is long past. Hit them hard, and hit them until they shut up.

And keep right on hitting them. The fight is never over. Not when it comes to dealing with evil - because that's exactly what it is - the dark side of human nature.

If a person was killed with a baseball bat, even the brain-dead folks at the New York Times wouldn't push for outlawing baseball bats.

Same with kitchen knives.

No one's going to call for a ban on knives.

Extremists on the left want citizens disarmed. They wants the country disarmed too.

Not because they believe it will stop Russia and China - not because it will stop crime ... but because the 'in' group behind leftist thinking are communists ... I've resisted this kind of thinking - but it's true. Communists are the 'think tank' of the left...
