Former UNC President Bill Friday says Andy Griffith died this morning in Dare County. Friday, who is a close friend of the actor, confirmed that to WITN News.
Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie confirms to WITN News that an ambulance went to Andy Griffith's home at 7 a.m. this morning.
The sheriff says he is checking to get more information on the condition of the person who the ambulance was called for.
The 86-year-old Griffith lives on Roanoke Island, not far from the Lost Colony, a play he performed in right after high school.
Griffith was born in Mount Airy, and is most known for his role as "Andy Taylor" from 1960 to 1968.

When has death ever stopped them from voting?
It's called acting. That's how they get in your head.
Classless? I think not. Classless is pretending to be something you are not.
A dead commie is a dead commie. Yay!!!
Now that was classless... and I don't give a hoot!
Ahhh, the enemy within. Nope, nothing wrong with that.
Referring to Andy Freakin Griffith as the ‘Enemy Within’ is a serious case of lack of proportion.
“A committed Leftist? Really, I missed that memo. Never heard him stumping for any liberals. He conveyed American values.
Therefore, I consider you a cold-hearted prick.”
You could have at least perhaps read the thread or looked up the accusation before responding in such an intolerant manner.
Many if not most of Andy Griffith’s last appearances were ALL ABOUT selling HusseinCare to America.
FYI.
Andy timed it perfectly.
Sold Baraqqicare to the masses.
And checked out before the Death Panels were fully enabled.
Barney: Oh, we told a few people, but we decided it didn't make sense upsettin' folks, runnin' around, blabbin', makin' a big moulage out of it. Andy: Uh, Barney - he means a plaster cast of the prints. Barney: (embarrassed) Oh. That kind of moulage.
I am as saddened by some of these comments as I am by Andy’s death. Disturbed to see people almost gleeful over someone’s death because they were a liberal. I have loved many people in my life, some liberal, some conservative, I have never felt anything but sadness in the face of their death and pray that I never do.
I hope everyone on here will remember that with each death, liberal or conservative, there is a mourning family who is feeling a loss. A loss that every single one of us has felt, some many times over.
Me and Andy were at opposite ends of the political spectrum but from all accounts he professed the one thing that transcends even politics for me and that was faith in Jesus Christ. (Transcends, not excuses. Just an added note for those on here who pride themselves on definition clarification.;) I hope to see him in Heaven one day. RIP Andy
His grave is on his beloved farm on Roanoke Island, N.C.
There was almost no time for extended family and friends to pay their last respects at the funeral. The quick burial was "planned for some time" and was explained as "the wishes of the family". No other information available at this time.

Why do I have a feeling that Andy would be saddened if you died, regardless if your political feelings were different than his? He struck me as that kind of class act. RIP Andy.
Don't worry, his vote will live on.....
I hardly believe someone “acting” as an all American guy, but truly a commie is a serious lack of proportion.
HE WAS AN ACTOR! Face it or don’t. I really don’t give a flying pig.
Acting is a perfectly noble profession. You have no idea what his politics were back then. He did a lot to change the Metropolitan view of Southerners.
Rest in Peace Sheriff.
I’ve seen that 1000 times, but I still laugh til my sides hurt every time I see that.
If you watch the earlier episodes (b&w) of AG all the characters had much more pronounced ‘southern accents’ but later on they lost most of their accents.
I found the show mildly amusing not guffaw funny just an easy way to kill a half hour.
Feels like a door is now closed on something that was already gone forever.
What a great show. Liked Andy best when he wore a gun.
