Uncovered e-mails close book on (Penn State football coach Joe) Paterno's legacy
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | June 30, 2012 | Scott Ostler

Posted on 07/01/2012 4:27:42 AM PDT by Zakeet

The Penn State horror story has taken a twist for the sicker.

And Joe Paterno's legacy is now more clearly defined.

E-mails have been uncovered by NBC. Three scared sheep - Penn State's president, vice president and athletic director - were going to alert the real authorities to the possible misdeeds of Jerry Sandusky, until the athletic director spoke with Paterno and persuaded the other two Sheep not to be so rash.

Subsequently, at least four more young boys were molested by Sandusky.

Paterno apparently persuaded the group to go easy on old Jerry. The athletic director, Tim Curley, e-mailed the other Sheep, "If Sandusky is cooperative, we would work with him."

Astounding. The Three Sheep, part of a huge flock of JoPa worshipers, decided that confronting Sandusky rather than turning him in "is a more humane and up-front way to handle this."

More humane, unless you're a 10-year-old kid and Jerry Sandusky is in your driveway a week later, the old Tickle Monster, honking his horn, bearing gifts.

By the way, the "upfront" confrontation with Sandusky apparently consisted of asking the former assistant coach not to bring his little boys on campus anymore. Friendly advice that Sandusky ignored.

Only Paterno knows why he wanted his Three Sheep to call off the dogs. Was it out of compassion for Sandusky, or out of concern that Paterno's program and his legacy might take a hit?

To at least four young victims of abuse, that distinction probably isn't important.

I’m glad my mother passed away before this all came to light. She was a cheerleader at Penn State, graduated from there, loved the school, and idolized Joe Paterno. This whole scandal would have devastated her.

Funny how the SFC has no problem promoting the wonders and glory of the gay and perverted lifestyle of it’s liberal base, but when it involves football, Penn State and people that aren’t of their “own kind” it’s suddenly verboten.

I just read the CNN version of this story and it didn’t have this tone to it (about Paterno)

According to the CNN article - the emails haven’t been released yet - someone read portions to one of their reporters.

"Joe Pa was the chief enabler."

And may he burn in HELL for eternity for allowing it to go on once he knew about it.
At least 4 boys are ruined for life because Joe Pa did nothing once he became aware of it. Football was way too important, and Jerry was a good coach.

Funny how this comes out after the trial and after Mr. Paterno is dead.

It’s typical of the mainstream media to run a hit piece on a man after be is dead and cannot explain or refute the allegations.

The important thing, IMHO, is the real perpetrator, Sandusky, has been tried and convicted, and will not be out there to cause such damage to young lives again. The rest of it is sensationalism.

Early in the reporting of this story there were rumors that Sandusky was pimping out the little boys to members of his foundation. I have a strong suspicion that rumor may be true. I have no remarkable insight into this case or pedophilia in general, just 52 years of human observation, but homosexual pedophilia seems to be somewhat of a team sport (no pun intended). I think there is more to this story that may or may not eventually come out.

How about that wife? You know d*mn well she knew her husband was molesting the boys! There's no way she didn't.

She didn't want to upset her cosy life style.

Enabler- just like Paterno and the rest of them.

And what about the parents? Were they too dumb to question why the excessive expensive gifts, trips and favors to their boys from Sandusky? 'Because he loved children' only goes so far...

Unbelievable- this whole thing!

It seems clear now that Sandusky did his evil deeds in full knowledge that JoPa would protect and defend him under the guise of protecting and defending Penn State and the football program. He felt he was untouchable (pun intended) and that’s probably why he was so clueless and arrogant right to the end.

Football is too highly esteemed in the U.S. We worship 320 pound IQ 10’s.

Another nail in the coffin of the U.S.A.

Imagine how the players will feel hitting the field this fall... I’d DEFINITELY get off that team.

I just read the CNN version of this story and it didn’t have this tone to it (about Paterno)

It's the tone I got from the CNN version - if you add what we already know.

Curley and Schultz had at least one meeting with McQueary (I think more, but I'm not going back to the Grand Jury Presentment, which spells out the meeting(s)). Based on what McQueary told them, Curley, Schultz, and Spanier discussed a three-pronged plan: (a) require Sandusky to get professional help; (b) alert The Second Mile; and (c) alert Child Welfare (the authorities).

But they didn't act on that plan. Curley appears to have been dispatched to get the blessing of Joe Paterno, or at the very least, to clue Joe Paterno into the decision before it was implemented. So Curley met with Paterno and emailed Spanier back:

"After giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe yesterday, I am uncomfortable with what we agreed were the next steps," CNN quoted Curley as saying in an email. Curley indicated, according to the report, that he planned to talk with Sandusky and also contact The Second Mile, but not necessarily the child welfare office if Sandusky cooperated and got professional help."

In other words, Joe said no. Remember that these emails were carefully worded, calling Sandusky "the person" or "the target." I doubt Curley was going to write "Joe said he didn't like our plan and told us not to contact authorities.

Some Paterno apologists are suggesting Curley went to Paterno to ask what McQueary told him and upon hearing just 'inappropriate' horseplay, decided McQueary's story was so mixed up that the authorities didn't need to be contacted. They forget that Paterno testified he was told it involved a 55-year-old man and a young boy, in the showers, and that it was sexual and inappropriate, and he couldn't remember exactly what he was told.

After having decided to contact Child Welfare, you don't decide not to do so after hearing that JoePa was only told that it was sexual and inappropriate.

So the media sees the evil of money and power in a college football program, but does not recognize the same accumulation of money and power in Washington DC.
