Charles Garcia the CEO of Garcia Trujillo, a strategy firm that works with Hispanic-owned companies does not like the term illegal immigrant. He prefers economic refugee.
He is not alone. Media Matters for America, the liberal website dedicated to . . . correcting conservative misinformation, claimed that Fox News used President Obamas June 15 immigration announcement as an opportunity to dehumanize undocumented immigrants. MMFA reported that Fox News used the term illegals 17 times during its June 15 broadcast, illegal aliens twice, and aliens once, not including uses of these terms in on-screen text. These racial slurs are further proof, the site contended, of Foxs long, documented history of anti-immigrant bias.
Efforts to change the parlance of the immigration debate are not new. In 2010 the Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists called on journalists nationwide to replace illegal immigrant and illegal alien with undocumented worker or undocumented immigrant, arguing that the usual terms are offensive to Latinos.
That same year, the Applied Research Center, a self-described racial justice think tank, launched its Drop the I-Word (DTIW) campaign, calling on media outlets and elected officials to uphold reason, due process, and responsible speech by dropping the i-word. Illegals, the think tank contends, is a racially charged slur used to dehumanize and discriminate against immigrants and people of color regardless of migratory status.
But while DTIW maintains that the i-word is racist, dehumanizing, and often inaccurate, is it actually any of the three?

When he tries a stunt like that, offer to rephrase the label “illegal alien”, to “Mexican citizens living unlawfully in the United States”.
But the Democrats get them documented.
About 30 states have some form of an ID law, with varying methods of implementation.
0bamao is reading thousands of lawyers for this next election.
Wonder how many ‘Fake but Accurate IDs’ he’ll have given to his illegals.
If you’re here illegally, then by law you are a criminal, I thought.
Can criminals vote even with ID?
I have a family member in the union trades -
they were told they could only refer to them as “our southern brothers”.
Yeah, and I prefer being called "big-boned" as opposed to "fat." Facts, however, are stubborn things.
Utterly, utterly absurd. Illegal “immigrants” can be of any race at all. Race card players are the biggest racists and the only racists in such a game.
Illegal immigration is simply more "share the wealth" socialism and a CRIME not a race!
“Economic refugee....”
Oh yeah? My family, for 8 or 10 generations in this country, have been ‘ECONOMIC REFUGEES!’ Half of them met the others as arrivals in the 16 & 1700’s. From Ispswitch, Mass. they REFUGEED all over this country....SEVERAL TIMES. Often on foot. The bunch that met the newcomers have kinda been ‘REFUGEED’ all over the place too. Some of ‘em on the Trail of Tears. They REFUGEED from one coast to the other trying to find a place to fit.
Charles Garcia can take his ‘economic refugee’ suggestion and stuff it in his racist ear.
And another thing....
A good percentage of this nation’s citizens are ‘Economic refugees’. Seems like everyone is leaving home for another city or state to find work. We don’t have the resources for ILLEGAL ALIENS and their racebaiting promoters.
The leftist aka progressives got anchor baby tagge a racist slur.
The leftist aka progressives got anchor baby tagged a racist slur.
Its is to those that feel only one race are illegals- such as the liberals.
They say only Hispanics violate our immigration laws.
I prefer criminal invader.
Call things by their proper name. They are not immigrants, they are illegals. They have no legal right to be here, and may not even intend to immigrate.
“I have a family member in the union trades - they were told they could only refer to them as our southern brothers.”
That is why unions are called “international brotherhood of...”; they have no patriotism (in terms of the union itself), but function more as an international guild.
No, but it is an oxymoron.
You can't be a "illegal" immigrant any more then you can be an "illegal" citizen. Both "citizen" and "immigrant" signify someone with a certain legal standing.
There are a number of words like this which are impossible to modify because they either are or aren't.
You can be an Illegal Alien because Alien is a legally neutral term.
