Are We in Revolutionary Times?

Victor Davis Hanson

Legally, President Obama has reiterated the principle that he can pick and choose which U.S. laws he wishes to enforce (see his decision to reverse the order of the Chrysler creditors, his decision not to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, and his administration’s contempt for national-security confidentiality and Senate and House subpoenas to the attorney general). If one individual can decide to exempt nearly a million residents from the law — when he most certainly could not get the law amended or repealed through proper legislative or judicial action — then what can he not do? Obama is turning out to be the most subversive chief executive in terms of eroding U.S. law since Richard Nixon.

Politically, Obama calculates that some polls showing the current likely Hispanic support for him in the high 50s or low 60s would not provide enough of a margin in critical states such as Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado, or perhaps also in Florida and Virginia, to counteract the growing slippage of the independent vote and the energy of the clinger/tea-party activists. Thus, what was not legal or advisable in 2009, 2010, or 2011, suddenly has become critical in mid-2012. No doubt free green cards will quickly lead to citizenship and a million new voters. Will it work politically? Obama must assume lots of things: that all Hispanics vote as a block in favoring exempting more illegal aliens from the law, and are without worry that the high unemployment rate hits their community among the hardest; that black voters, stung by his gay-marriage stance, will not resent what may be seen as de facto amnesty, possibly endangering his tiny (and slipping) lead in places like Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. And because polls show overwhelming resistance to non-enforcement of immigration law, Obama also figures that the minority who supports his recent action does so far more vehemently than the majority who opposes it. Time will tell; but my gut feeling is that his brazen act will enrage far more than it will delight — and for a variety of different reasons. As with all his special-interest efforts — the Keystone cancellation, war-on-women ploy, gay-marriage turnabout, and now de facto amnesty — Obama believes dividing Americans along class, ethnic, gender, and cultural lines will result in a cobbled together majority, far more preferable than a 1996 Clinton-like effort to win over the independents by forging a bipartisan consensus.

Economically, why would we formalize nearly a million new legally authorized workers when unemployment is approaching its 41st consecutive month over 8 percent — especially when Democrats used to label 5.4 percent unemployment as a “jobless recovery”? Here in California, the slowing of illegal immigration, due mostly to the fence and tough times, has led to steep wage hikes for entry-level and farm labor, and given a little more clout to Americans in so-called unskilled-labor fields. In other words, it really is true that the real beneficiaries of border enforcement are low-paid Hispanic-Americans and African-Americans who become more valued when they are not competing with virtually unlimited numbers of illegal-alien workers.

When you collate this recent act with the class-warfare rhetoric, the “punish our enemies” threats, the president’s and Eric Holder’s serial racialist statements, the huge borrowing, the national-security leaks, the takeover of health care, the push for redistributive taxes, and even the trivial appointments like a Van Jones, Anita Dunn, or Armendariz, you can fairly conclude that Obama most certainly did not like the way the United States operated for the last 30 or so years, and has tried his best, through hook or crook, to change America in ways that simply were not possible through legislative or even judicial action. Give the president credit. He has thrown down the gauntlet and essentially boasted: This is my vision of the way the new America should work — and if you don’t like it, try stopping me in November, if you dare.

When we as a people get fed up... and we will... you will be shocked at the things that we do. We are the best... at least half of us are anyway... the other half will not make it long term. The best way to lose is to bet against America and Americans.

I’ve been ready for a long time. Frankly, I don’t know what the hell everyone else is waiting for.

“We are near the end of the democratic phase of our empire. The next is either break up, or tyranny.”

Yup. I would prefer a peaceful break-up, but expect the worst from this narcissistic POS.

Without exception the people who would act on or promote illegal and violent means to change government are either leftists or just kooks who have no political identity.

I can think of a few American radicals who would have disagreed with that statement 236 years ago.

Well put. I should have said “the constitutional government
of the United States of America” instead of the generic term
government.

Another example of Obama 'pushing the envelope':

Got this in an email from a retired U.S.A.F. fighter pilot who flew F-105’s in Vietnam, an Academy grad - 204 missions over North Vietnam in an F-4

"I just wanted to pass on a little info in case some of you were not aware of this. Yesterday was the Air Force Academy graduation ceremony. My friend from Texas had just arrived and we drove down the road to watch the Thunderbirds air show after the ceremony was finished. Most of you know Pres. Obama spoke at the ceremony and handed out the diploma's. When this finished it was time for the Thunderbirds to fly. There was one maneuver then they disappeared.

A man standing by me called a friend at Peterson Field and found out that the air show was halted because Obama wanted to leave. A helicopter soon appeared and flew around in a circular pattern above where we were - basically doing reconnaissance as Obama's motor-cade was exiting the Air Force Academy. He was going to Denver to do some more campaigning since Colorado is a swing state. After he left the Thunderbirds came back and continued the show for the graduates.

Think about this. Obama comes to a graduation, speaks etc. then decides to leave before the Thunderbirds can complete their air show. They had to fly around, & waste fuel. Thousands of people - the graduating cadets, parents, friends, observers in the vicinity parked in lots waiting to see them fly, inconvenienced, so Obama - his "highness' could leave to go campaign in Denver ! How disrespectful of EVERYONE in attendance. It would have taken only about 20-30 minutes more time to stay until the fly-over was finished thereby honoring the graduates, Thunderbirds and the military in general.

However, this narcissistic disgrace of a 'Commander -in-Chief" had to inconvenience everyone and leave interrupting the ceremony fly-over because everything is about him. I was disgusted by this and so was everyone else standing around near us. I hope this info gets passed on so others can learn how disrespectful this Pres. is toward the military. Not too many who witnessed this will be voting for him."

I should have said “the constitutional government of the United States of America” instead of the generic term government.

I don't think anyone on our side is advocating an overthrow of our constitutional form of government. That is indeed, the jurisdiction of Democrats and other degraded radicals.

Why doesn’t he just issue an EO declaring himself President-For-Life of the People’s Republic of Himself?

What are we advocating? From reading the majority of comments on the front page of this site we are advocating falling in line behind the liberal cultist mormon.

I dont consider voting for the architect of romneycare very revolutionary...

Sounds to me like you and I are in the same fox hole.

It’s 1853 all over again...

Unless you consider the coming days as a likely response to an entrenched pro-Socialist government, in which case it's more like 1918. Or, if it comes to a showdown between Constittionalists and Communists, 1946.

This will be no regular rebellion... America is decaying from the progressive cancer that is eating her. She will collapse under her own weight. The revolution will be in rebuilding our Republic and re-instituting the vision of our Founders. The end is coming... the damage has already been done. When the EU collapses... you will see the beginning of the end of our present Republic... the only question is when. We will survive and America will survive... but she will have to rise again like the Phoenix.

I tend to agree with you, I wonder though if this isn’t all be design, perhaps God’s or somebody else’s. But things just seem to be falling into place fairly quickly and the hidden puzzle we have been inhabiting is to me quickly revealing it’s pieces as we get closer and closer to the puzzle being complete.

Now the question is this is the world going to fall into another long Dark Age or will we push through and restore Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?

This is the most important election in the lifetimes of nearly all Americans.

Yes it is, and at a time when so many young people don't have a clue.
