MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX (CBS ATLANTA) -
An honor student in Texas was thrown in jail after she missed too many classes at her high school.
A judge issued Diane Tran, 17, a summons Wednesday for her excessive truancy after she missed class. She was arrested in open court.
Last month, Tran was issued a warning by the judge for missing school.
Tran said she works both full-time and part-time jobs, in addition to taking advanced and college level courses.
But the judge said Tran's case was bigger than the individual situation of one student.
"If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?," said Judge Lanny Moriarty. "Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence."

Public schools can’t afford to let brilliant students miss a lot of worthless class days because the state pays them for each warm body in a seat.
I only went three weeks into my sophomore year, never saw junior or senior, started my own business and was making very good wages in collecting scarp metals.
Sometimes the school system fails completely.
This is infuriating.
She’s 17! I thought you could quit school at 16.
How very liberal.
Symbolism over substance.
And, of course, the Cretin-in-Chief is the ultimate example of all symbol and absolutely, positively NO substance.
This obviously intelligent, hard-working young woman probably is cemented into being a conservative and has a positive future. The moronic idiot of a judge should be removed from the bench. What a clymer. Idiots are everywhere...even on the bench in Texas.
Hmmm, I think “series” should be “serious” - just saying.
“Willis, TX sounds like the armpit of the country.”
As a fifth generation Texan, I can tell you that Willis is but one of many “armpits” in Texas, where little men with a little authority feel like big shots. The worst thing in the world for these tin-horned despots is to have the bright light of ridicule and negative publicity shine on their outrageous misuse of their position. Keep those phone calls and FAXes flowing....and it wouldn’t hurt to send them to the idiot administration of the Willis ISD as well. Someone among the teaching staff should have known about the incredible feat of courage and achievement of this exemplary student and spoken in her defense.
>>Hmmm, I think series should be serious - just saying.<<
“hugh and series” and “loose” are old FR memes.
According to Sasha Cohen she’s the hairy one, right?
Yes. Just another example of the lunacy of Egalitarian/Collectivism (Communism & Socialism), that always Sabotages Human Potential. To paraphrase a wise man: Free people are never equal, and equal people are never free.

Judge Lanny Moriarty is a ‘Justice of the Peace’, for crying out loud. What an evil POS...has his Prick stuck up his nose.
Perhaps it is time we did away with the Justice of the Peace position. And perhaps it is time for this dick head to spend about 12 months in the slammer with a big bad Bubba for a cell mate.
I ask because schools and educators insist that they care about kiddies. I am curious if anyone in the school took so much as a minute out of their day to learn about her background. Mayhap they were too busy coddling gangbangers to notice or care.
Haha, yeah. Craig Ferguson as well.
I dont know how to do italics.
Practice:
On the "try it yourself" just type anything you like between the HTML tags in a line and hit "edit and click me".
Willis, TX sounds like the armpit of the country
Fact is Willis is growing by leaps & bounds.
Fact, also, he’ll win re-elction when he runs easily.
Exactly. She could have been asleep at her desk and the district would not care so long as she was present during the class roll call.
Thank you.
I have read a few comments by liberals on other web sites. They are mostly sympathetic with most saying instead of punishing the girl, the judge should have tried to help her. She is trying to help herself. Liberals are so wired into thinking one way they couldn’t even get that fact in their heads.
Was she charged as a minor or as an adult? Will she be made to put this arrest record in all her college applications, scholarship applications and job applications for the rest of her life?
I’ve yet to meet a judge who I’d trust with my dog’s life much less my child’s.
