Republican Gov. Chris Christie is more popular than ever in New Jersey, according to a new poll.
Christies approval rating stands at 59 percent the highest ever in the regular polls conducted by Quinnipiac University. Christie locks up the support of 92 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of independents. Democrats make up the only political group that views him more negatively than favorably; two out of three Democrats disapprove of Christie.
The new numbers suggest Christie remains a powerful political brand at least in his home state just as his name continues to be floated as a possible vice presidential pick for Mitt Romney. Christie has demurred when the question comes up, but Republicans are also looking to Christie for a possible presidential run in 2016 if Republicans dont win the White House in 2012.
Christies approval ratings have been climbing upward since a minor blip in January when he dropped down to 53 percent. Meanwhile, his disapproval rating has been falling and stands now at 36 percent.

No doubt that Team Romney is looking at Christie very closely. I do wonder about Christie’s health. I also hope that Eric Cantor is being considered.
I admire his passionate speeches and positive attitude.
However, he is a complete RINO.
What we DON’T need is 2 RINOs on the ticket. Eric Cantor has been a huge disappointment as well. He’s another go along - get along Republican.
Both men are bad choices. However, if Christie campaigns for Romney in NJ, he has a chance of winning that state in the general.
The Three stooges of the GOP:
Idiot Romney, Fatty Christie and Numbskull Ann Coulter.
More attention is being paid to the VP prospects now.
Erice Cantor? What has he done (EVER) to advance the Conservative message? Romney needs all the help he can get when he is pretending to be right wing and Cantor will be useless.
Christie is so fat it hurts to look at him
The man is good with the take-no-prisoner speeches but personally his body image shows ZERO self control. Yes, it matters. It is an obvious personal flaw, imho, and odds are he will live a shortened life for it
Luckily there is no way the GOP would be dumb enough to team up 2 northeast RINOs
(NOTE: they'd shamelessly continue to claim "he's pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage" even if Christie stopped every single abortion in the state of New Jersey and convinced 100% of the population to be heterosexual. His actual policies don't matter to the bashers, they'll make up their own "facts" about his positions so it fits their "Giuliani clone" smears)
I wish republicans would quit letting the media drive their emotions.
Chris Christie is not conservative. He would be a loser, too.
I thought you’d find this interesting.
If Romney puts Christie or another RINO in the VP slot that’s it for me. I will stop even considering a vote for Romney.
Would you have preferred if democrat Corzine should have defeated RINO Christie in the last election?
Do you like that a democrat won NY-23 over Hoffman who was a good conservative but a lousy candidate?
Let's not forget that Christie Creme is one of only two Republicans to attend the State dinner for the Commie Chinese President Hu Jintao. Disgraceful.
I am often amazed that some FReepers can’t see the forest from the trees.
Chris Christie has record popularity in NEW JERSEY of all places, and he has achieved it with mostly pro-liberty and small government rhetoric. We should celebrate this. The message is resonating in unlikely places. This is good news.
Of course Christie is a big RINO (literally). Let’s keep our expectations reasonable. I certainly wouldn’t want him on the ticket, but I am content with him as governor of New Jersey. His is the best we can hope for from a state like that.
according to some here, NO ONE except a pristine few can be supported for pres/vicepres....
for me, Christie is fantastic....so is Rubio....so is Rudy....I like strong men and I could care less if they fit in as "conservatives" as long as they are patriots and pragmatic financially...
Romney could pick JC Himself and I wouldn’t vote for him.
Christie, IMO, is a RINO just like Mittens. If Mittens wants Conservative votes and workers, he would be wise to pick a Conservative VP.
How ANYONE who considers themselves “conservative” could POSSIBLY adulate this guy is really beyond me. He’s a one issue man, a guy who tried to balance the checkbook - admittedly, something unique in New jersey government, but still hardly the only qualification for a conservative. Even his counterpart across the River, Michael Bloomberg, understands that.
Chris Chistie is a quintessential RINO. He is STRONGLY pro-Islamic, anti-Second Amendment and anti-First Amendment. He refused to have New Jersey participate in the suit against Obamacare. He signed a bill against “fracking” and opposes drilling off the Jersey coast for oil. It took several years for him to pull New Jerrsey out of the coalition of Northeastern States that are a party to a statewise version of cap and trade. He ALONE of invited Republicans of political stature, attended a dinner at the White House with Obama and a repsentative of the Red Chinese government. I could go on and on about this guy.
And Romney is, I think, far too shrewd a political operative to select aomebody from the same part of the Country as he is as a running mate, particularly one as RINOesque as Chris Christie. Romney needs to shore up his southern conservative base, which is less than enthused about a Northeastern Liberal RINO, particuarly one with Mormon backgrouond issues.
