In Illinois, Romney grinds away with attacks on Santorum
Miami Herald ^ | March 18, 2012 | Paul West

CHICAGO -- In the latest indication that momentum is nonexistent in the Republican presidential contest, Mitt Romney won a victory in Puerto Rico on Sunday and worked toward another in Illinois on Tuesday, results that would quash Rick Santorum's efforts to build on primary successes last week in Alabama and Mississippi.

On Sunday, the candidates were traveling down very different campaign paths. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, made stops across Illinois, including in conservative areas downstate where Santorum is expected to show strength. Santorum, meantime, skipped ahead to campaign in Louisiana, which votes this weekend.

Until recently, Santorum appeared to have a good chance of winning Illinois, the second-most populous state to vote so far this year, behind Florida. He's urged his Illinois supporters to help him forge an upset that "can shake up this race like no state can shake it up" and turn the campaign "completely on its head."

But the Romney forces have been grinding Santorum down, as they have elsewhere, with nonstop attack ads that the underfinanced challenger appears powerless to overcome. Statewide polling that once showed a tight race is now tilting Romney's way.

Romney and the "super PAC" supporting him have spent more than $3.6 million on advertising in Illinois, compared with just over $500,000 for Santorum and his super PAC, according to figures provided by a Democratic source with access to media-buying information. Most of that money has gone into anti-Santorum ads in the Chicago media market, which reaches more than half of the Republican primary electorate.

I detest him almost as much as you do. I can’t stand the way he uses Alinsky tactics on his opponents. Dear Lord, I don’t think I can vote for him if he’s the nominee. What a predicament. I want obama gone, but, can’t stand Romney either.

Greetings seekthetruth:

For the last week, five to six phone calls daily on my parent’s land phone. Most are Myth Romney, some are polling outfit calls. My parent’s always let the answering machine screen the calls. Both will vote Santorum Tuesday.

Chicago MSM TV broadcast stations are overloaded with Myth’s Santorum bashing commercials. Remainder are The Machine’s advertisements pimping for their favorite democRats because a few genuine Democrats managed to make the ballot.

This is my fifth election as an Illinois GOP election judge in a heavy democRat precinct. Louie GuiTerrorist (dRat-??) is the gerrymandered incumbent; so we’ll see how donks many actually pull a GOP ballot. This notorious Crook County precinct reported an 80% general election turnout before I picked it as a judge. Since then, the best turnout was an 18%, lowest 14%. (One FReeper can make a difference, LOL!)

Cheers,
OLA

Like you, I'm not a Romney fan. I'll be voting for Rick when our primary rolls around (here in Texas), but if Romney wins the nomination I wonder if he'll continue to hit hard in the general election? I nearly had a stroke 4 years ago, every time I'd hear McCain talk about how honorable Obama was, etc. I know Obama will get down and dirty, so I hope our eventual nominee, whomever it may be, will too. To Romney's credit he's been scathing so far on Obama. Of course, he does spend more time beating up on the GOP candidates, but it's not the first time a primary season has gotten bloody and it won't be the last.

Holy Cow, amazing they sent you a ticket while you had never been there. You should have seen the letter I wrote to them...I called them everything from running a banana republic to a crooked bunch of thugs. You are right, some people pay any bill that is mailed to them.

Chicago once sent me a parking ticket while I had never even visited city limits in couple of years.

I got one too, and so did my daughter. Neither of us had been in Chicago for bout three years. Consequently I will not frequent Chicago unless it is absolutely necessary. The place stinks with corruption.

My money says Romney will duplicate the efforts of McCain and Dole. No contest

First and foremost, the Illinois GOP is dysfunctional. The birthplace of many "Combine" issues in Springfield started DuPage County. In a local race, the county board chairman investigated (with an auditors report) the wrongdoings of various committees and commissions, yet sent out a robo-call yesterday endorsing one of the chairmen of a highly corrupt board within county government for judge.

As for robo-calls, the Romney PAC anti-Santorum calls are nauseating (and plentiful) and not a good invitation to vote for Mittens.

Santorum is gaining traction in Ill-Annoy because of his go-along-toget-along, vote with the Dems in order to "take one for the team" approach - it have been defined and refined in Ill-Annoy as the "Combine". Don't vote on conservative principles, vote to garner favor with the Democrat gods who run the state - and who have run it into the ground.

The strangest robo-call yesterday was regarding Gingrich. The call started out by slamming Newt for not visiting DuPage, yet by the end of the call asking me to vote for Newt.

For as much hype there is about Ill-Annoy in its importance in this race, it is a canard. Ill-Annoy is a done-deal for Mittens, and that's why I am voting for Newt.

Actually Santorum has overcome more than anyone in the race. He started out without much hope.

He is the only threat left to Mitt Romney and has beat him in quite a few states. He knew what he was up against and still managed to keep trucking on.

I would call that quite an accomplishment.

I think that the majority of Illinois Democrats will request democrat ballots, because of the congressional races. In the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, and 17th Districts, at least two Democrats are running, in each district.

My wife, Nicole, hates the Romney TV commercials. They mostly mention Santorum, but they don’t give details about Romney’s views. The ad says, “Governor Romeny has an agenda to move this country forward.” It doesn’t say what the agenda is. Nicole voted for Rep. Paul.

In these times the man we need for president is someone who can overcame a coordinated program of continual lies and still stick to his principles and articulate a strong patriotic message. He needs to be able to take all they can dish out and still not give in an inch on principle. He must be intelligent, principled and courageous.

I hope you don’t mean Newt. Newt cannot win. He can’t win because he is Newt. Newt isn’t known to stick to principles.

Replace Newt with a Not Newt and the message would have spread.

Newt is damaged goods, if he wasn’t, he would be ahead.

You see, the message is good, but people don’t care for the messenger. There is no other explanation.

That is what it boils down to with Newt.

The most from a guy running for the Cook County Board of Review. He also has signs all over and is doing alot of advertising on the radio.

Vote for Dan Patlak, the incumbent. He's a personal friend I've known for a dozen years. Well qualified and won all major endorsements.

His opponent, Sean Morrison, is a lying slug with a mall cop mentality.

I know how you feel. I would give anything for a different choice than what we'll end up with in November, but, barring a miracle, it will be Romney vs Obama. I can't stand Romney either - I don't trust him and I think he is as phony as a three dollar bill. OTOH, this country CANNOT WITHSTAND ANOTHER FOUR YEARS OF OBAMA!! All bets are off if Zero wins - no re-election to worry about and a blank check to ram forward the rest of his socialist left-wing agenda, which will have the net effect of tearing this nation apart, something Obama needs to make happen so that he can build his socialist 'paradise'.

As bad as Romney is, Obama is worse - much worse.

I am voting for Patlak. Supposedly Morrison is self-funding but if so, he is spending a boatload of money for a Board of Review position.

Current Delegate Tracking

1144 needed to clinch, 1324 remaining

Candidate, Won, percent of remainder needed
  1. Romney, 521, 47.1%
  2. Santorum, 253, 67.3%
  3. Gingrich, 136, 76.1%
  4. Paul, 50, 82.6%

If Romney is awarded all of Puerto Rico (23) and Santorum all of Missouri (52) under standard rule of winner take all if absolute majority is won, then the numbers are:
