Televangelist preacher Jamal Bryant vowed to “shut down Florida” at a rally on Wednesday to demand justice for slain Miami-Dade teen Trayvon Martin.
“This is a wake-up call for the state of Florida!” Bryant said. “We are going to shut Florida down until justice weighs down!”
The Baltimore preacher and leader of the Empowerment Movement spoke at a rally at the Allen Chapel in Sanford in response to the Feb. 26 killing of the Michael Krop Senior High school student.
Black leaders are vowing to bring at least 1,000 protesters from around the country to a March 26 city council meeting if charges are not filed in the case. The protesters, he said, should bring bags of Skittles like the candy Trayvon carried when he was gunned down after a fight with a stranger.
Trayvon was visiting his father and his father’s girlfriend in a gated community when the homeowner’s association neighborhood watch volunteer spotted him and thought he looked suspicious. The two tussled and guard George Zimmerman opened fire, killing the unarmed boy.
Zimmerman claimed self defense and has not been arrested. The case was referred this week to the state attorney’s office in Sanford for review. Police Chief Bill Lee said there was no probable cause for an arrest.
Because the boy is black and Zimmerman is widely believed to be white, the teen’s family and many activists believe Trayvon was racially profiled. However, Zimmerman is Hispanic.

According to one of the posters here, he was an honours student.
I do know that people tend to act with consistency. If they are violent, they tend to react violently. If they’re non-violent, they tend to act nonviolent.
You can get suspended from school because you brought a butterknife or let somebody have a lozange, so I’m not necessarily inclined to think the kid was a serious troublemaker.
Since it was his mom who sent him, that suggests he may have started to flirt with possible troublemakers, but probably wasn’t a serious troublemaker at this point in time.
If the guard were black, would this even be a newsworthy story?
You sure seem intent on defending this kid without having an ounce of facts to back it up.
Who knows what happened? George or Trayvon? Those were the only 2 there and in FLA, the gun laws FAVOR George.
That’s why we’re known as the Gunshine state.
intact family?
His daddy’s girlfriend is his mom? Where was this guy living to be visiting them?
We all are, until the facts come in.
Like you said, you have no evidence regarding who attacked who first.
As for the bloody nose, one blow can cause a person to lose consciousness and then be completely defenseless against further mayhem. It happens all of the time. Ghetto thugs knock someone out and then proceed to maim or kill them. There is no reason for Zimmerman to risk this. This whole "it was just a fistfight" line is garbage. If you attack an innocent person then you deserve what you get. I do not know whether Zimmerman was completely innocent, but I have seen no evidence indicating otherwise.
I have not read of Zimmerman calling anyone names on the 911 call.
I wonder whether you or someone else made this up.
He lived with his mom in another town.
He was to stay with his pa for a week or so.
treyvon coulda been acting in self defense and trying to protect himself because he was being followed by strange, possibly dangerous man with a gun (zimmermann). He did not look like a police officer or have any police identification, so why would any citizen stop for this neighborhood watchman? maybe treyvon thought he was being robbed or attacked by zimmerman. if treyvonn was a young pretty woman minding her own business.....would you logically expect that woman to be afraid of some strange hispanic man following her with a gun? zimmermann was the aggressor acting like a cop, even though he has no police badge or uniform. citizens don’t know him or what he is actually up to.
the fact that the kid came from an intact family, my guess
Where do you get "intact family"? My guess is that you are an idiot. Learn to read.
Easy, some folks have no sense of humor, or sarcasm. I feel sorry for em.
There is no “Hispanic” race, but many American (including 100% of the government) are too stupid to realize that.
He had it right at first. He called the police and observed. Unless he actually saw him committing a crime there was no reason to pursue. The association is going to lose a big civil suit whether Zimmerman is charged with a crime or not.
And if Alex Trebek ever tells me that, my response will be "What is La Raza?"

Come down to Miami sometime and you will see plenty of white Katin Americans.
Hispanic as a racial category only exists in the United States, is not taken seriously in the rest of the world. Being that Latin America is multiracial, folks in the respective countries refer to themselves by a variety of racial categories, including white.
different meaning to the term “intact” than I use.
Even that is disputable. "Even the basis for Zimmerman's initial phone call is questionable.
Here's why: The sheriffs' association manual lists the type of suspicious activity that should be reported to police. Among the examples: "Someone peering into car windows" and "broken doors or windows." "
The only suspicious action Zimmerman reported was Martin was wearing a hoodie jacket on a rainy February night.
You made this up.
I agree with your analysis.
The teen was unarmed. He was in his father’s community and returning to his home after a trip to buy candy. He could be my son or my grandson.
There is far too much blaming the victim on this thread and excusing the killer.
