I have advocated Gingrich staying in until sometime in March. I felt the vote splitting would help prevent Romney from locking up a sufficient number of bound delegates to take the nomination. The plan did a good job so far, but not a great job.
I think now the mathematics is shifting such that Gingrich needs to bow out. The reasons for the shift are:
1. winner-take-alls coming up soon - vote splitting begins to really hurt us in these primaries 2. we need money consolidating behind Santorum. 3. Santorum made the Indiana ballot after all
But now Gingrich needs to bow out.
Absolutely. Look how FReepers actually came home and announced on the election thread how proud they were to vote for Newt in Ohio. They and others like them gave Romney the win there.
This isn’t working. I appreciate everyone voting their favorite. But if FR sticks to the endorsement of Newt that helped so much before SC, it will only assist Romney at this point. And we know JR doesn’t want that.
The reason I wouldn’t want newt as president is because he has a deeply needy personality, probably from childhood, and he will be more motivated to fill his need for adoration and importance than to fulfill our need for a sane conservative steward of the country.
How Newt behaves when faced with this information, that his run from now on only helps split the conservative vote and give Romney that edge, will demonstrate whether he lets his desire for self importance or his love of country win out.
Texas was supposed to vote today. I wish someone would "follow the money" on just how that court case got so tangled up that our primary got postponed first to early April, and now to late May. It may get postponed further. Who has benefited by that? I'd say Romney. If Texas had voted today, no one would care how close Ohio is.
“How Newt behaves when faced with this information, that his run from now on only helps split the conservative vote and give Romney that edge, will demonstrate whether he lets his desire for self importance or his love of country win out.”
You’re absolutely right. It won’t make any difference to Newt or his supporters, but you’re nevertheless insightfully correct.
So on to block Romney, then?
Or aqcuiesce just to block Obama?
Newt can, but people have lost interest in him. It is a sad fact as I am a pretty big newt fan, but it is a fact nonetheless. Just as is the fact that there is this seemingly unbreakable level of support for Romney. We must take the momentum of santorum and turn it into a Romney defeat. This way we accomplish ABR and then we move to defeat Obama.
“Most brilliant statement I’ve heard all night.”
When the obvious sounds brilliant, you know it’s not the most elevated of threads, but thanks anyway.
Newt, if he were a morally decent man, would stop his campaign tonight - throw support to santorum in an attempt to block Romney - and then Obama.
Newt is not a morally decent man - if we know anything about him, we know that much.
Well, no one is bowing out this week, I guess, so let’s see how next week goes. AT some point it will become crystal clear.
I do fear the newt guys here are delusional. They hate Santorum but don’t get that people don’t like newt. I guess that is an ace in romney’s hole. I’d vote newt if he has the best chance to beat Romney in June.
I love this argument. Newt cant even win among Republicans, or even conservatives, yet somehow he is going to win the presidency when he is running 3rd place in the primaries.
Post of the night. I think these newt guys are delusional. Newt is a great speaker. A great visionary. But he has so many personality failings. And to some of us it’s evident.

Also, I hang around stupid people too.
Only if Rick agrees to take speaking, debate, and Jaw-Jitsu lessons from Newt. I genuinely fear Obama would smash Rick in a debate. Rick will fail to challenge the premises of the questions and then chase the rabbits the press assigns to him every time.
Rick’s a nice man with a good heart, ....which is true of 100 million other Americans.

Before everyone gets their panties in a wad. Obama is already starting to make the moves to destroy our military.
Ron Paul will just drive the knife into their backs.
I thought it was clever how the Obama military haters are going to cut Benefits for veterans and wounded soldiers.
Wonder how far enlistment will drop on that one.
One of Ron Pauls best friends is George Soros..
Thank you. Can you direct me to a link that shows the ACTUAL delegate count for each candidate as they are awarded? I know Newt got 75 from GA tonight since GA is a winner talk all state. The Google supposed count had newt with only 72 delegates which means he got nothing in SC??? That is BS!
I also heard that although Santorum won some popular vote he did not win many delegates. I want to see an accurate running total for each candidate as the primaries proceed.
As for my state of FL, the delegates are not secure for Romney as Florida delegates may be awarded proportional in the end. :)
NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
Mr. Newt will take it all the way to the Convention and he will win there! Time is on his side, and he has the Bold Solutions, and the Bold message. Time will give this to Mr. Newt! I feel it in my heart!
EAGLES UP MR. NEWT!
And Florida delegates are not secure in Romney’s total delegate count, as the Florida delegates may be awarded proportional in the end. :) GO NEWT!

Delegate counting is not an exact science.
Sounds good to me.
;)
Gotta keep diggin- but that’s cool.
Romney v Santorum is one big grasshopper chewing the face off another small one, IMHO. Better to keep it 3-4 way.
Romney is weaker fighting multiple fronts; requires more chameleonism.
