Timothy Cardinal Dolan ramped up the rhetoric in his battle with the White House over contraception policy yesterday — and promised some political payback.
“Don’t impose your teaching upon us and make us do as a church what we find unconscionable to do!” the freshly minted prince of the church told a roaring crowd of 1,000 at Holy Trinity Diocesan HS in Hicksville, LI, referring to a government plan to mandate that religious institutions provide free contraception to workers.
“The Health and Human Services fight is a freedom-of-religion battle. It is not about contraception. It is not about women’s health,” Dolan said.
“No, we are talking about an unwarranted, unprecedented, radical intrusion into the interior life of, integrity of a church’s ability to teach, serve and sanctify on its own.”
In a blistering attack interlaced with humor, Dolan never mentioned President Obama by name — only his policies. And the cardinal promised to put the political muscle of 78 million American Catholics to work against the enemies of free religion.
“President Johnson said, as an American, I look to the church — I look to religion as a beehive. If you leave them alone, they’re going to give you tons of their honey. But if you stick your head in there, you’re going to get stung bad.”
The cardinal, dressed in black and wearing his priestly collar, warned that the sting may come in the voting booth.
“I’d recommend starting voter-registration drives at our parishes. Not only is it going to help churches, it is going to help our American republic. More voters the better.”
And he said he’s confident he’s not alone in the fight.
“We look up and see people who share our values and our vision,” he said.

I hope that the Cardinal realizes that he is dealing with a cool—blooded hater who wears a cheery mask.
Don’t you imagine the DNC will drum up the illegal immigration issue toward election time to cause great conflict with the Catholics? It seems that was the #1 issue with the Catholics in 2008.
On the anniversary of Roe vs Wade my church planted a white cross on the front lawn for every child murdered by abortion in the month of December in Louisville. There were 280 crosses which everyone had to pass upon entering the church. It was a powerful message. Right to Life in Louisville also took out a newspaper ad, which published the names of people against abortion. It cost $5 to put your name in the ad. The names were printed Very Small and filled a whole page (thousands upon thousands of names).

Many, many liberal Catholics went into parish and diocesan work, and even into the religious orders. Feminist, gays, and modernists whose sincerely believe that the essence of Christianity is doing social work. Schools and colleges, hospitals and charity are now literally in heir hands. They have marginalized the authority of the bishop. Only now are some bishop trying to take some of that back. It is a lot like happened with the Reformation, where trimmers finally began to be weeded out only after Trent. What we need now is some shock troops like the Jesuits were in those first generations, and bishops willing to endure the hatred of progressives denied the power in the Church which is their lifes blood.
Hell yes it is back firing! As it should be. I for one quit participating in my Catholic upbringing BECAUSE I wanted to take birth control. Never for one minute did I dream of causing my religion to change their valid views because of mine. I accept my own personal decisions and am big enough to suffer the consequences of those decisions. The older I get, the more I miss that old Latin traditional Mass. But, I have made my confessions and amends to God and walk in His light every day. God has shown me others outlets of worship. If I were in Sandra Fluke’s shoes? I would shut up and go to Planned Parenthood. But would be embarrassed to publicly proclaim (sorry, whine) about having to pay $3000 for contraception when I go to a school that costs $60,000 per semester.
I don't doubt any of that in the least, but there is more to it than that. It's not just radical ideologues. It's the bizarre multi-generational ethnic loyalty the Democrat party seems to hold over certain groups. They held it over white Southerners for a hundred years and it could be argued that the only reason they lost that bloc is that they intentionally decided to trade them for another bloc (Blacks).
How many urban Irish union workers are radical ideologues? How many of them will ever vote for a Republican?
The answer is simple.
Like the Audubon Society, The NEA and many other organizations, the mainline Protestant church organizations have been absorbed into the liberal network. The churches are political organizations masquerading as religion.
The congregants are too simple to realize they have become political fodder
The Irish are not what they once were, identified by their faith. Andrew Greeley, way back in the 60s, noticed how the college educated, even those educated in Catholic colleges, were becoming wasp-light. The old ethnic Church was already on the way to breaking up in the 50s, and if you look at the course taken by the colleges at the Land-of-the-Lakes conference, we see a declaration of independence from the :old Church.”
There is a lot at stake here. Freedom being one aspect for without freedom we won't have much else.
Too bad Obama is not Catholic, he’d look good in a “Hair Suit”.
Re: Is there anyone who honestly thinks abortion is ok ?
Obama, pelosi, planned parenthood etc. You have to include infantacide
That will never happen. The church is no longer in the business of public lynching. The reasons are obvious. A public reprimand would only provoke sympathy from the left. These matters are best kept 'at home'.
In 2009, Pelosi met with the pope at which time he strongly rebuked her over abortion. FWIU, since then both of her bishops have met with her (one engaged her in a year long discussion on the topic) and exhorted her to have a change of heart. I recently heard that Pelosi no longer attends church.
I don't hear any outcry from Evangelical or Lutheran or Methodist or Anglican or any other christian denomination's leaders ... do you? Where are their voices on this topic? Oh, that's right, they have been silenced because they condone contraception and abortifacients. Instead of sitting on the sidelines critiquing the Catholic Church, perhaps you can channel your energy into raising awareness in your respective churches. We could use a little help in this battle that will benefit ALL religious organizations, not just the Catholic Church.
The Democrats must be thinking.....
“I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
I met Dolan a few years ago when he traveled up to Albany to meet with then Governor Paterson. The hall leading into the governor's chambers was packed with media. After the meeting, the other bishops in his entourage, left the building through a back door. Dolan, on the other hand, walked right over to the reporters and answered all of their questions. He then proceeded past them where chamber staff stood hoping to catch a glimpse. I boldly called out his name and he walked right over, shook my hand and listened to what I had to say. Strong hands and a big smile!
When I made my confirmation (pre VCII), the bishop came. I was only 11 and we were a very large group of kids under the scrutinizing gaze of the good sisters. With all the distractions, it was difficult to focus but when the bishop addressed us, he said something that grabbed my attention and has remained with me ever since. He addressed us as "Soldiers of Christ". That is what is conferred on us with this sacrament. Now is the time to rise up to the challenge. Too many catholics are ignorant of their faith. Why not speak with the pastor and see how you can help rally the troops. The first weapon in your quiver is PRAYER! Begin today and make it a daily habit. Start with the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God - cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. |
No, he can't. Too many people today are "catholic" in name only, too many people claim to be Catholic, but pick and choose which rules they will follow (nobody in line for confession on Saturday, but EVERYBODY is in line for Communion on Sunday...), and too many are like Pelosi and Biden and their ilk. But even 10% of 78 million is a respectable number. I like the beehive analogy, too.
LOL! Sure they have!"
NYer is right. They have excommunicated themselves by their deliberate and repeated disobedience. Their continued presentation of themselves for the Catholic Sacraments is a sign of their contempt for the Church. They have a habit of finding sympathetic priests or parishes where they are unknown as a way to continue to defy and poke their fingers in the figurative eye of the Church.
!! (I added those to show you I'm applauding.) Wouldn't we ALL love to see some!?
Well, I'm Catholic, and I AM furious! There isn't much we can do about them, but I have faith that God is keeping short accounts in all of this. I would love to be a mouse in the corner when they are judged.
