Timothy Cardinal Dolan ramped up the rhetoric in his battle with the White House over contraception policy yesterday — and promised some political payback.
“Don’t impose your teaching upon us and make us do as a church what we find unconscionable to do!” the freshly minted prince of the church told a roaring crowd of 1,000 at Holy Trinity Diocesan HS in Hicksville, LI, referring to a government plan to mandate that religious institutions provide free contraception to workers.
“The Health and Human Services fight is a freedom-of-religion battle. It is not about contraception. It is not about women’s health,” Dolan said.
“No, we are talking about an unwarranted, unprecedented, radical intrusion into the interior life of, integrity of a church’s ability to teach, serve and sanctify on its own.”
In a blistering attack interlaced with humor, Dolan never mentioned President Obama by name — only his policies. And the cardinal promised to put the political muscle of 78 million American Catholics to work against the enemies of free religion.
“President Johnson said, as an American, I look to the church — I look to religion as a beehive. If you leave them alone, they’re going to give you tons of their honey. But if you stick your head in there, you’re going to get stung bad.”
The cardinal, dressed in black and wearing his priestly collar, warned that the sting may come in the voting booth.
“I’d recommend starting voter-registration drives at our parishes. Not only is it going to help churches, it is going to help our American republic. More voters the better.”
And he said he’s confident he’s not alone in the fight.
“We look up and see people who share our values and our vision,” he said.

Very good analysis and of course you are right about this. Here's a link to a thread of one recent religious liberty homily that specifically intended to influence this 'swing vote of the Catholic electorate'. I pray for more. Sebelius and 0bama have awoken a sleeping giant.
Best wishes to you, but if the Republicans prevail, who’s going to look after the poor, ensure that homosexuals get their privileges, and save the earth? Are they saying that they’re happy to rob convenience stores, but draw the line at banks?
Someone please correct me if I am wrong but everyone keeps saying this is just about contraception. Isn’t the abortion day after pill also included? Isn’t the government trying to call this contraception? It isn’t and it’s such a shame this country (should have been led by the Republicans)hasn’t defined personhood yet after 50 million plus abortions.
I am Catholic and I LOVE this Cardinal. He was our Archbishop here in Milwaukee for 5+ glorious years and almost singehandedly revived our Seminary which nearly closed under the previous Abp. Talk to almost any Seminarian, or new priest, and he will tell you that they chose his profession because of Abp Dolan.
Dolan was a prince among men before he was named a Prince of the Church. He greets everybody as an old friend, even if you’ve only met him briefly once before. In that respect, he is charming like George W. Bush can be.
All Church’s should be standing with catholics on thisone. If he beats the Catholic Church who knows which will be next.
First they came for the catholics in this instance.
This is a muslim attack on Christians and Jews.
, by our muslim president, and his buttlicker fake Catholics in his administration.
Yes but these are the ruse for the real issue: religious freedom. The government is imposing its will on those who object, on religious grounds. Since the Catholic Church is the only christian church that bans contraception (hence it is not covered under their insurance plans), Obama, knowing many catholic women take the pill, pulled the 'divide and conquer' ploy. It is backfiring.
Your parish may have been remiss but not the entire Church. Consider that Jesus may not buy your excuse for not worshiping Him in the manner He Himself ordained. If you want real Catholicism, get thee to a Latin Mass parish.
Nope, he can't raise 78 million, but even if he only gets a few million more Catholics to vote against obama it will change the out come.
In 2008 obama won the overall Catholic vote 54-46 but lost the real Catholic vote {those Catholic's that regularly attend Mass} 55-45.
Obama really won the Latino vote by 64% but many Latinos attend Mass and if 15-20% of them switch, {and they live in swing states}, obama is out, {even if he gets every black vote including those that are dead or in prison}.
Obama should never have lied to Cardinal Dolan back in December.
He picked a fight with the wrong Cardinal, he would have been better off trying to steal home against Cardinal Catcher Molina.
An important point was also raised by another freeper: "Too bad too many other churches are sitting on their collective thumbs."
Where are the voices of such prominent Evangelicals as Joel Ostein or Pat Robertson? Why don't we hear from the Lutherans or the Methodists or the Anglicans? Oh wait ... they are silenced because their churches approve of contraception and, hence, abortifacients. Only the Catholic Church can stand for all christian churches in this fight for religious freedom, from which all will benefit because only the Catholic Church bans contraception. Please pray for these leaders and ask your pastors to support their efforts in their respective communities.
Why don’t the Chinese just buy “one of everything”?
It is amusing to see the Russians getting a dose of their own medicine. “Hmm...perhaps maybe we will invent that for ourselves also....first!!!!”
Whoops: I posted to the wrong thread above. Sorry. Please ignore.
The good Cardinal will soon be taking a one-way midnight stroll through Fort Marcy Park.
You should’ve asked about public excommunication. One can quietly self-excommunicate by canon law. I’d like to see some public excommunication myself.
Cardinal Dolan confirmed my oldest when he was archbishop of milw. He is right to stand up this way, but in my
own parish and diocese, too many Catholics are radical leftists. they have bought into social justice ( via big govt) and radical feminism hook, line, and sinker. This will fall on many deaf ears. i pray it will spur some who have been silent on the sidelines into action.
In fact, I'm not Catholic and they make me furious the way they show their total disrespect for the Catholic church and its teachings!
I think it has gotten worse the past several years.
Pretty much what I expect as well.
Indeed, but all this rhetoric will ring hollow unless the Church resumes a systematic teaching against sexual sin, starting with contraception, extramarital sex and homosexuality on the parish level.
So is John Hughes!
If 78 million (or however many there were at the time) American Catholics had voted their theology forty years ago, our society wouldn't be in this mess today. This is not flame bait, just a statement of fact.
The hold the Democrat party continues to maintain on various groups despite its utter moral bankruptcy is nothing short of "satanic." American Catholics should have been a sure and study bulwark against all that has happened in recent decades, but loyalty to the Democrat party has turned that segment of the population into a mere phantom.
