Republican Congressman Connie Mack now runs dead even with incumbent Democratic Senator Bill Nelson in Floridas 2012 U.S. Senate race. But Nelson outdistances two other potential GOP challengers, former Senator George LeMieux and businessman Mike McCalister.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Florida Voters finds Mack and Nelson earning 41% support each. Five percent (5%) like some other candidate in the race, and 12% remain undecided at this early stage. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
In Rasmussen Reports first survey of the Florida Senate race last November, Mack, a congressman from the Fort Myers/Naples area, posted a modest 43% to 39% lead over Nelson, a member of the Senate since 2000 when he won the election to fill the seat vacated by Macks father.

Mack is vile. We need a real Conservative to take out Nelson.
I don’t like Connie Mack IV at all, but we need to take the U.S. Senate (and the White House) for the nation to survive. If I lived in Florida, I’d cast a protest vote for Mike McCalister, then bite the bullet and vote for Mack in the general.
Mack is better than Nelson. Nelson is vile.
“Mack is vile.”
That is largely true. Please read posting #3 very carefully.
... Thanks to a half-dozen cows that graze Nelson's 55 acres on the Indian River, he saved $43,000 in property taxes last year.
Nelson does not live there or own the cows. He leases the land, at no cost, to a cattle operation. Nelson says he gets to preserve undeveloped land while providing for a waning industry.
Yet the small herd has saved Nelson big taxes. The land has a full market value of $2.7 million, but the county tax collector uses the agricultural value of $210,000. That reduced Nelson's tax bill in 2011 to $3,696.
Nelson's situation is legal but nonetheless cuts to a long-running debate over Florida's "greenbelt" law, originally intended to give farmers a break as the state modernized
Bill Nelson may have ethics troubles. Please read Posting #6.
Thanks Clintonfatigued.
Mack compared support for laws against illegals to Nazi Germany (and hence supporters of said laws would be “Nazis”, infinitely worse than what Rick Perry’s “heartless” comment). I wouldn’t give this establishment fraud the time of day. He needs to go, his wife (Mary Bono) needs to go, and so does the imbecile Nelson.
It’s up to Florida voters, but somebody who would compare my #1 concern to being akin to being Naziesque wouldn’t EVER get my vote, period. He thinks he’s owed the job because his daddy and two more of his ancestors served in the Senate. Another self-serving establishment punk with a grandiose sense of entitlement.
We are forever trapped in the “You must vote for Mr. Rino so we get a majority” mindset. When we get a majority, we are always at the mercy of these unprincipled slobs. It has to end. We need to rid ourselves of the Snows, McCains and Poofster Grahams.
Speaking for myself, I supported primary challenges to both Lindsey Graham (2008) and John McCain (2010).
Connie Mackk is backing Mitt Romney, and was showing up at Gingrich events here in Florida stalking Newt. Screw Connie Mack. I don’t care if we win the Senate. I’m almost hoping Mitt Romney wins, because if he does, I have vowed to block out politics completely. I liked life better when I didn’t follow politics and didn’t care.
McCallister trails Nelson by only 6, which is better than Former Senator Peppy LePew does, he trails by 10.
I’m a bit concerned that Mack is a bit of a paper tiger, that his good polling is based mostly on his daddy’s name.
I’d back him if he were the nominee. He may be a jerkass but he’s not Susan Collins. We need this seat.
“McCallister trails Nelson by only 6”
If Mike McCallister wins the nomination, he deserves our enthusiastic support. He’s my first choice in this primary.
I heard McCallister speak in New Orleans at the RLC last summer. I’d put up there with Allen West. He’s worth every cent.
In the meantime I'll vote for anyone who opposes the smarmy Bill Nelson, who voted for a certain bill he didn't read, who voted for the most breathtaking assault on our liberties.
Obamacare.
I will never forgive and always oppose the dirtbags who voted to blow up our Constitution and enslave us.
Sniffing glue: An addiction or an escape from reality?
The fact I trust Charlie Crist's appointee more than I do Mack shows just how far he's fallen from the tree.
I agree any of the one of the three seems to be competitive with Nelson and will run a decent race in the general election. Nelson is an imcumbent so it will be a chore removing him even though he's weak. But none of the candidates will be a retread of the blowout that Kathleen Harris got in 2006. That being said, I fully expect Mack's supporters will be playing the tired old "only our RINO can WIN!!" card until primary day.
