Candidates often say things when polling in the single digits that come back to haunt them when they start leading the polls. Last October, Rick Santorum gave an interview with an Evangelical blog called Caffeinated Thoughts, in which he said contraception is not okay, and that this would be a public policy issue he would tackle as President. In particular, he said he would get rid of any idea that you have to have abortion coverage or contraceptive coverage as a government policy.

Conservatives are having a fit over them as well.
I vote and have supported birth control because it is not the taking of human life. But Im not a believer in birth control and artificial birth control. I think it goes down the line of being able to do whatever you want to do without having the responsibility that comes with that. I think it breaks that this is from a personal point of view of, from a governmental point of view I support that Title X, he said [in 2006].
I guess it is and have voted for contraception, although I dont think it works. I think its harmful to women. I think its harmful to our society to have a society that says that sex outside of marriage is something that should be encouraged or tolerated , particularly among the young and it has I think weve seen very, very harmful long-term consequences to the society. Birth control to me enables that and I dont think its a healthy thing for our country.
Again, Rush said that they cut the part where Santorum said that these were his personal beliefs that he was talking about, that he had no intention of forcing his beliefs on others.
He was stating his belief and opinion on the topic with regard to how Christians need to take a hard look at their views of contraception, and he has a valid point about the “deconstruction” of separating the sex act from procreation.
Is there something positive with regard to family structure that has come about as a result of widespread contraception? Are more people establishing stable families because of the pill?
But, I didn’t see anywhere in that transcript where he advocated that the government impose this belief on anyone,
so I don’t see how your observation of “the language of a small government conservative” even applies.
Respectfully, it doesn't matter what Rush says. The MSM can edit anyway they choose. And they will choose to destroy Mr. Santorum.
Please get used to it.
actually, not.
Women aren’t going to vote for someone with these personal beliefs. He should have kept them to himself or not run for President.
Rick’s aversion to birth control even for married women and his skepticism of women working, calling it a “feminist trap”, means he has NO chance of being elected.
It’s time to wake up and deal with reality. This guy would be the worst nominee ever and give the Rats total power in D.C. again.
So, per usual, they took a conservative’s quotes out of context in order to make them appear to be 180 degrees from what they are.
It would be ok because bacon (for most people) has nothing to do with sex.
THE FOCUS MUST BE ON OBAMA AND THE ECONOMY!
DO NOT FEED THE LEFTIST TROLLS!
It doesn't matter whether Santorum thinks this is a private opinion or a potential policy issue.
As a presidential candidate he should never have thrown a democrat red meat issue like this on the table. Terrible unforced error. The enemy will use it the way they want to, which we have already seen, tarring the GOP for wanting to wage "war on women." Trust me this drumbeat will not let up until November, and santorum has handed them the drumsticks to beat him with.
I have opined elsewhere that Santorum's "glass jaw" is that he will be pushed into corners where he will either have to compromise and backtrack on principles he has espoused, or else sound like a crazed extremist lunatic. Either way he is toast.
This was not just a bad idea. It is evidence of impaired judgment, and why I have aired severe misgivings about this guy.
Why are we talking about contraception instead of... oh, I don’t know... the economy? The looming massive tax increases? Health care mandates?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why not talk about social issues? I think they are crtitical to the future of our country.
Look. If we elect a person who is WRONG on basic moral issues, then you can be DAMN sure they will be wrong on fiscal matters also.
Obammie started this debate on contraception. He started this fight with the Catholic Church. I hope this sinks him.
A public policy issue with a profound impact upon the health of our society - but he doesn’t want to regulate/curtail/ or legislate it.
Does freedom have to have a positive societal impact for it to be engaged in? Does the speech have to have a positive impact upon society for it to be protected? Does gun ownership have to have a positive effect upon society before we are free to keep and bear arms?
Rick apparently believes there is a ‘compelling government interest’ in contraception in that it has such a “profound impact upon the health of our society” and is a “public policy issue”.
Well, I don’t know if I would go as far as saying 180 degrees different, but certainly, Rick Santorum has no intention of forcing his personal beliefs on anyone.
Frankly, most Catholics that I have known are like that and they are much less judgmental, as a whole, also. Except that is, for the kids in my neighborhood who told us that their nun said that we were illegitimate because our parents weren’t married in the Catholic Church.
I belong to Bacon of the Month club... ;)
Calm down. Stop yelling.
Walk and chew gum at the same time.
We are focusing on Obama and the economy. But why can’t we address a social issue like contraception?
It’s about time we started looking at moral issues in our country as we consider who our next CinC will be.
Yes, end of argument. Unless you can find some sort of legislation he's introduced or advocated, that's the gist of it. I'll wait over here.
It’s none of your business how Rick Santorum lives his private life, as long as he doesn’t intend to force his views on the country. It’s a matter of free choice and freedom of religion. He’s entitled to his own beliefs.
Do you object to Romney being a Mormon?
WHOA!
You may want to "recalibrate" your wording on that. Under no circumstances whatsoever is abortion ever fine. It's murder. Period.
