Goodbye To The King Size: Mars To Downsize Candy Bars In 2013
npr.org ^ | February 15, 2012 | Allison Aubrey

Ready to say goodbye to a sliver of your Snickers? And how about a slightly slimmer Mars bar? By the end of 2013, chocolate-maker Mars says all of its chocolate bars will be under — or right at — the 250-calorie mark.

With all the fixation on our civilization's expanding waistlines, it's not that there are bad foods, just big foods. That means you won't be seeing lower-calorie chocolate or caramel — just less of it.

And the company says it wants to be an industry leader, helping its customers enjoy "responsible snacking." It sort of reminds me of beer manufacturers' campaigns for responsible drinking.

That just means you’ll have to pay more for the amount of calories you really crave for.

And they will rise the price.

Some things will remain King Size -- but your snacks will be dealt with harshly.

LOL this is funny.

They are downsizing their candy bar to do us a favor.

I remember as a kid when the Giant sized bar they sell now was the regular sized bar they sold for a nickle.

They kept making it smaller and smaller to keep it at a nickle, and finally they jacked up the price.

That is whay they are making this one smaller too, don’t be fooled by their BS that they are doing us a favor.

By the way the article didn’t mention that they would charge less for the smaller bar did it??

I remember when I used to go to the store and buy a candy bar, I never do any more. I cannot see my way to dump a dollar or more on a sweet tooth.

The only time I eat candy now is when it is left over from halloween.

Of course, this is all about M&M/Mars being concerned about our health. Nothing whatever to do with the fact that a smaller candy bar sold for the same price as a larger one equates to more profits. Certainly not.

Similarly, coffee companies are worried about our excess caffein consumption; why else would they reduce the size of their standard bag o' beans from a pound to 12 ounces?

And thank God for my local tavern: thinking only about the health of my liver, they now sell their "pints" in 14 ounce glasses.

Ain't it great that so many people care about our well-being?

Anybody remember 5th Avenue candy bar?
IMHO the best candy ever made.
It was orginally made by Ludens, and was similiar to Butterfinger only softer and MUCH better.
It was covered in milk chocolate with almonds on top.
Hersheys bought it and discontinued the almonds.
Now, you seldom see them in stores.

I think this will go over about as well as Olive Garden’s reduced portions.

No value for my money means that my money will find other ways to be spent.

Hm. I remember when they came out with those tiny two bite size bars they euphemistically labeled “Fun Size”. I have never determined who that “fun” was for; it certainly wasn’t me!
So, could the new size be named “Michellesized”?

So, what did a 5 cent snickers bar weigh in about 1960 when the little grocery store my folks shopped in sold them for 6 for a quarter?

I LOVED 5th Ave. candy bars. So that’s what happened to them. What a shame.

The last time we visited Olive Garden we mentioned the noticeably smaller portions to the server. She told us she has to weigh every bowl of salad before it leaves the kitchen.

Only at gas stations with your taxpayer funded SNAP card. And only if the purchase includes a 124 oz. Slurpee.
