The FDA has won its two-year fight to shut down an Amish farmer who was selling fresh, raw milk to eager consumers in the Washington region, after a judge this month banned Daniel Allgyer from selling his milk across state lines, and he told his customers he'll shut his farm down altogether.
The decision has enraged Mr. Allgyer's supporters, some of whom have been buying from him for six years and who say the government is interfering with their parental rights to feed their children. But the Food and Drug Administration, which launched a full investigation complete with a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and a straw-purchase sting operation against Mr. Allgyer's Rainbow Acres Farm, near Lancaster, said unpasteurized milk is unsafe and said it was exercising its due authority to stop its sale from one state to another.
Adding to Mr. Allgyer's troubles, Judge Lawrence F. Stengel said if he is found to violate the law again he will have to pay the FDA's costs for investigating and prosecuting him.
His customers are wary of talking publicly, fearing the FDA will come after them.
"I can't believe in 2012 the federal government is raiding Amish farmers at gunpoint all over a basic human right to eat natural food," said one, who asked not to be named but who got weekly shipments of eggs, milk, honey and butter from Rainbow Acres. "In Maryland, they force taxpayers to pay for abortions, but God forbid we want the same milk our grandparents drank."
The FDA, though, said the judge made the right call in halting Mr. Allgyer's cross-border sales.
"Intrastate sale of raw milk is allowed in Pennsylvania, and Mr. Allgyer had previously received a warning letter advising him that interstate sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal," said Siobhan DeLancey...

“the eighteenth amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of all intoxicating liquors as well as the importation or exportation of them.”
Which was repealed by the 21st Amendment.
government isn’t about protecting “us”,
it’s about protecting the ruling class.
And those pesky folks that attempt to be “independent” are going to be a real thorn in their side some day.
Pasteurization is mainly scalding milk, which was used early on (1700's) to extend it's use. The process was commercialized in the late 1800's to extend shelf life, and yes the scalding kills bacteria as well. It was used more for commercial interests than safety issues, but fresh milk from a healthy cow and clean workers is not harmful.
I’ll bet that in Cuba you can drink any damn milk you choose.
Accepting their premise is foolish.
Never answer a fool in his folly, or you will be like him yourself.
The issue isn’t about safety, not in the least.
That’s disgusting. Thanks for the post/link.
CONN. CASES JOIN HUNDREDS HOSPITALIZED "Less than 1 percent of the dairy products consumed in the United States are unpasteurized, yet more than 50% of dairy-associated outbreaks are linked to unpasteurized products," said Gould, who was not involved in the new investigation.
From 1993 to 2006, she added in an e-mail, outbreaks related to raw milk and cheese and yogurt made from it have been tied to 1571 illnesses, 202 hospitalizations and two deaths.

I was raised on raw milk and butter, I’m 57.
But it was my aunt’s cow’s milk and butter, not bought.
Soon, the Feds will put a stop to that, even.
Obama Edict # 53958.197:
No person residing within the United States may consume raw milk or milk products from any source.
But there is no milk to choose..............
Unfortunately, there are some that truly enjoy this kind of work.
welcome to FR
Yeah, I know ... I do little enough for my Lord, I can at least acknowledge Him.
You've never suffered from it, have you? Ever seen a young child working his way through such an infection? How about some of these....any in here you think might be bad to go toe to toe with?
Ever seen someone with a bad case of E. coli 0157? Do you know what HUS is? How about listeria or TB? Brucellosis is pretty brutal too, especially if you're a kid. Many of these come from inside the cow so no matter how much you clean or attempt to sterilize the production of the milk, only pasteurization can kill those bad bugs.
Raw milk is responsible for nearly three times more hospitalizations than any other foodborne disease outbreak. There are absolutely no health benefits to drinking raw milk vs. pasteurized milk so taking on that risk isn't rational. Watching parents give it to their children, while their immune systems are still developing, is unfortunate. Even so, I'm against the government telling people what they can and cannot consume, but don't try and downplay the inherent risk in consuming raw milk. The facts don't support you.
Black market raw milk will become all the rage
LLS
Shure 'nough...to make the milk last longer. I've drank enough raw milk and cream to float a boat. Stay away from the cream though. It's ten times more addictive than the milk!
Repeat: healthy cows and clean handlers.
Well we can thank all those RINO’s who voted for the Food Safety Act. Now the FDA has SWAT. What next?
What about all those pathogens that come from inside the cow? Can you can tell from looking at the cow if it's carrying coxiella burnetii or brucella species? I don't think so. There are a whole host of pathogens that can be present inside dairy cows that would cause no outwardly signs of infection.
Drink raw milk if you want but don't try and tell us that making sure you get your milk from healthy cows with clean handlers will prevent sickness. It won't. There are no health benefits to be derived from drinking raw milk vs. pasteurized milk. That being the case, why accept the risk?
I have no agenda here, and if you have a bias against raw milk, fine, don’t drink it.
