When Jennifer Sammartino needed help paying for college, she, like many students, took out federal and private loans. Now she’s faced with over $130,000 in student loan debt.
After Sammartino graduated from La Salle University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. she had no luck getting a job. She then made the decision to go back to school, hoping that a Master’s degree would bring in more job opportunities.
But graduate school also meant more loans.
Unable to get approved by herself, Sammartino’s parents co-signed for the majority of her loans. Now they could be in serious financial trouble too.
If Sammartino defaults on her loans, her parents could lose their home.
Sammartino, now with her Master’s degree is still unable to find a job in her field. She works as a case manager for special needs children, but her salary isn't enough to pay back all the money she owes for her education.
The debt seems overwhelming to Sammartino. “I would like to be able to pay my student loans, and we know that we have to pay them back,” she says, “But we don’t know where to start.”

Well, that’s because she is now “overqualified”, a stupid statement if there ever was one! It’s hard to feel sorry for the people who think/thought a college degree was a guaranteed job. And to think the drums are still playing the need for a college degree and encouraging the young and uninformed that they should take on further debt. That house of cards is soon to tumble down.

When I went to college (the back axxed way) before military, I had a kid and a wife and worked 40hrs. College was much more affordable then 1963.
Today kids need to strategize at a young age (preconception). They need to plan then and pick and win the parent lottery...i.e. choose parents with enough money that they can comfortably send you to Harvard, etc, so you don’t come out with 6 figures in debt. If your parents have money, these problems go away. So have some personal responsibility and pick your parents wisely...LOL.
Seriously, I feel bad for the many young people today that must go deeply into debt while the crooks in our government are taking good care of China and Wall St.
It's not to difficult to see that she didn't ever consider WORK to meet her obligations
It took me a lot longer to complete college because I didn't apply for loans. I worked the whole way through, stopping and starting when I had or didn't have money enough. I also worked DURING school.
It was NOT a party for ME!! It was hard work but when I graduated, I didn't owe a penny to anyone!

You need to see a “psychologist”
He immediately switched from "Liberal Arts" to "Computer Engineering Technology" and is considering a further switch to "Electrical Engineering".
lemme see. borrowing 130k to get a degree in which one cannot find a job. but borrowing more to get a more advanced degree in the same field is gonna cure it?
am I the only one here who sees the parallel here?

You can get through school debt free, if you want to work, take your time, and utilize various tactics to cut costs.
This indebted person just did it the hard way. Here comes reality, frowning and carrying a big stick.

Actually, I’ve done quite well with these degrees. I’m a few years from retirement and have had a good career working in social work, banking and the defense industry. In retrospecty, it’s been very “rounding” and has give me insight to lots of different people and opinions. “”””””””””
Times have changed. Now we have a zillion kids with degrees and no common sense or, more importantly, a good work ethic.
Don’t wind up with a daughter with a Bachelors in Psychology. Get Direct TV.
Whenever you pour a gallon’s worth of information, into the mind with a capacity of a shot-glass; you are probably gonna spill a little.
This woman should have been able to figure this out up front, with a third grade education. Don’t saddle yourself with education debt for a degree that won’t support you let alone repayment.
During my life I have come into contact with a number of psychologists. It’s my sad duty to report that with the exception of one or two of them, they were all bigger ding-bats than many of their patients.
Why is it with so much education with regard to normalcy and what isn’t, that these folks are so eccentric, no strange, and unable to pick mates that won’t leave them at a rate higher than the public at large?
A few of them have actually concerned me, wondering how in the Sam Hell a person that wigged out, could possibly do anything other than F up other wounded souls by merely coming into contact with them.

Object lesson No. 1: Do not, do not, do not cosign student loans.
I have the same reaction to this student’s predicament as I did when watching a woman complain the other day about her $320,000 house forclosed (when her and her husbands’ combined salaries were $50,000/year).
You gotta be kidding me...
These kinds of stories increasingly annoy me. What parent sends their kid off to a priviate school to get a degree that typically leads to jobs that don’t pay well? A state college would have cost half that amount. If mommy and daddy have the $$$ to support this, great! I have no problem with that what-so-ever. If they don’t, then why in the @#$% would you go to a college that costs $40K/year?
Had the ‘kid’ done even a basic study of expected salaries and done some simple math regarding tuition, this situation would have easily been avoided, or accepted, quietly.
Now they will whine to the Gov’t who will find a why to shift this mistake on to the tax payers... which will BREED MORE OF THE SAME PROBLEM! When mistakes have no consequence, we don’t learn. When the gov’t constantly saves us from our own mistakes, we don’t learn.
BTW, I have 2 10th graders. We are already having the obvious converstaions to avoid exactly this problem. This is simple reality. My kids will know the situation going into it: you’re starting with this many $$’s... choose wisely.
