GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) Dan Conne says he and his wife and son thought they were going to die after getting lost while picking mushrooms and spending nearly a week in the rugged forest of southwest Oregon.
They spent the nights huddled in a hollow log and considered sacrificing their pit bull, Jesse, for food.
"She's that good a dog, she'd have done it, too," Conne said.
But help finally arrived Saturday when a volunteer helicopter pilot decided to look outside the search area and spotted the family Dan, his wife, Belinda, and their 25-year-old son, Michael on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. The three were about 10 miles from the town of Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.

Man may think he has evolved and changed in modern times. But nature remains unchanged and completely indifferent to such claptrap.
For the unprepared, nature will continue to kill the same as it has done since the dawn of man.
Plus they ditched their foraging gear along the way! I bet these guys are not bragging about their weekend.
If they don’t know what they’re doing then its better for them to stay put. Especially with one person injured.
You cant starve to death in 6 days.
True, the not bad looking woman with a that creature, confirms she is an idiot for sure.
For those of us who are self reliant and don't want to sit around for several days waiting to be rescued while less than a day's travel from rescuing yourself - self rescue, to me, will always be the more attractive option.
That was my guess, looks like they have had more than one hit of crack.
Chanterelles are ~August through November/December at the very latest. I’ve never seen ones that aren’t all slimy by this time of year.
Here is the kind of idiot who lights a signal fire that burns down more than the idiots life was worth, and killed 15 innocent people.....

The Cedar Fire was started by Sergio Martinez of West Covina, California who claimed he was hunting in the area and had become lost (for a single afternoon). At first he claimed the fire was started accidentally by a gunshot but later said he started the fire to signal rescuers. Martinez was charged on October 7, 2004 in federal court with setting the fire and lying about it.[12] On March 10, 2005, Martinez pleaded guilty to deliberately setting fire to timber in the plea bargain under which the charge of lying to a federal officer was dropped
Parenthetical remark my own.
I live in one of the "few places" and even if you do find a road, could be days before a car comes along.
LOL!!!! “If the bear was as scared as I was, then that water’s not fit to drink.”
Flip flops and one water bottle.
I asked them if they knew where they were. “Dutchman's Trail” “No you're on the Uwharrie Trail. It's marked with white paint, the Dutchman with yellow.”
I showed them where they were on the park map I picked up at the kiosk at the Ranger Station - and gave it to them.
Their plan was to hike the 8 1/2 miles +/- back around to the parking lot by sundown. Oh, well. But they did have a lighter - smokers.
Edible mushrooms. Ya don’t look for Magic Mushrooms in old growth forest.
A week? A fricking week and they were ready to slaughter the dog?
Two weeks and they’d have been ready to sup on long pork.
Look at their pictures.
I think they were eating the mushrooms, which is why they couldn’t find their butts with both hands.
So they were going to eat their pet dog raw and uncooked.
Gold beach is a small town on the coast, just up from the border. There is a small body of water just to the west, called the pacific ocean. There is a black top 3 lane highway that runs along this small body of water. Given they were lost for what, a week, seems they could have simply headed west.
Evidently they were about as good at finding mushrooms as they were at navigation.
As someone who was raised in that area I disagree, the moment you feel like your lost start a fire and I mean a big one, do everything you can to draw attention to yourself. If the lives of my wife and children were at stake I’ll set a moutain on fire, they will find us!
