That single got Sloan a song writing job at Screen Gems, where he teamed up with Steve Barri to write and record songs under a variety of names. This one is an attempt to be unabashedly commercial, and it’s almost an embarrassment. (If you listen to just the first 30 seconds and drop out, I won’t be offended.)

The Lifeguards: “Swimtime USA”

In 1964, as part of this effort to get even a modicum of attention, Sloan and Barri blatantly copied the sound of Jan & Dean for this ode to Ford’s Mustang.

The Rally-Packs: “Move Out, Little Mustang”

If that bit of sonic plagiarism wasn’t bad enough, Sloan and Barri blatantly copied the sound of the Beach Boys for this little ditty under yet another name.

Those attempts at copying two different brands of the L.A. Sound got Sloan and Barri noticed by Lou Adler, who ran the shop at Screen Gems. He used them as backup singers and musicians on sessions with Jan and Dean, and Sloan even replaced Dean Torrence as the falsetto voice in “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena”.

The boys finally got on the charts with a dance song performed by a local group pushing a new dance called the Slauson, named after a boulevard in L.A.

Round Robin: “Kick That Little Foot, Sally Ann”

Adler now had them writing for Jan & Dean, and they got album placement with this little number. I titter when I think of it.

Jan & Dean: “One Piece Topless Bathing Suit”
