The Chevrolet Volt ended 2011 on a high note, charting its best month of sales to date.
Chevy moved 1,529 of the plug-in hybrids in December, despite the specter of a possible recall to address the potential for battery pack fires.
Full year sales checked in at 7,671, well short of the companys stated goal of 10,000, but enough to outsell one of its top rivals, the Toyota Prius.
Not in 2011, Toyota sold 136,463 Prii over the last 12 months, once again cementing its position as best-selling hybrid in America, by far.
But, go back to the turn of the century when the Prius was introduced to the United States in 2000 and youll find that Toyota managed to sell just 5,600 of the innovative cars.

Doubly misleading, since the limiting factor on Prius sales was that their first year, that was all they sent to the United States. There were year-long waiting lists for the car. And of course, Prius had sold a lot more cars in Japan; Volt’s worldwide sales for the 1st year aren’t close to the Prius numbers.
I believe most of the Volt sales were “Fleet Buys” by Govt. agencies and GE.
Good lord!!!
Ping.
The Public Utilities Commission here is switching from Chevys to Fords. Fiestas I think.
Yeah, those Volts are really hot. Literally
I wouldn’t own either one.
Volt sales are heating up!
.
after flee sales are deducted the real sale number will probably be in the hundreds.
these cars must have zero resale value.
Isn’t it nazism when the government chooses the winners?
Most expensive scrap ever.
Most expensive scrap ever.
Most expensive scrap ever.
Yeah, but all 8,000 Volts sold have been recalled. Have 100% of Priuses been recalled? Hmmm....
That would leave a mark if we weren’t fighting smoke...
I don’t know about 100%, but the Prius has been recalled quite often and in large numbers. Just for a start:
437,000 Prius recalled:
