House agrees payroll tax deal as Republicans cave in to Obama

House speaker John Boehner is set to sign an offer from Obama to accelerate negotiations.

Republicans in the House of Representatives have capitulated in the showdown over the payroll tax, handing Barack Obama an important victory going into election year.

Under pressure from other senior Republicans for blocking a bill that would extend tax cuts to millions of Americans, the House speaker, John Boehner, is backing away from his insistence that any deal must cover a full year.

A deal agreed by Republicans and Democrats in the Senate on Saturday covers two months, to allow further negotiations in January. It appears that Boehner will sign up to an offer from Obama to accelerate these negotiations.

The deal means that, after a year of humiliation at the hands of congressional Republicans who have repeatedly threatened to close down the federal government, Obama is close to a much-needed victory.

The decisive moment came when ther Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, after days of silence, lined up behind Barack Obama and the Democrats.

Boehner was blocking passage of a bill that would extend tax breaks to 160 million Americans, a measure introduced by Obama last year to help stimulate the US economy. If the bill is not passed by 31 December, American taxpayers face cuts in their pay of an average of $40 every two weeks. About 1.3 million people stand to lose unemployment benefit.

Boehner, the Nutless Wonder.

Cantor, his worthless sidekick.

These morons have no business in leadership postions, they’ve screwed up AGAIN! They do it every time!

They can’t control the membership. Pelosi was FAR more effective in doing her job when she was Speaker than Boehner is, and this kind of crap only helps hand control back to the Dems.

Look up “Squandered Opportunity” in the encyclopedia and you ought to see pictures of Boehner and Cantor right there.

Disgusting.

I agree it was the right thing to do.

I’m just extremely frustrated that the left owns the message and we can’t get our message out there. I can’t believe how incredibly twisted this whole thing got. Up is down and the sun sets in the east.

According to the press and the demoncrats, anyway. And the people believe them.

All winning the House did is create a strawman for the POS in chief.

Welcome to my world! The national GOP is owned by the demrats. Any candidate it supports may talk a conservative talk but will walk the demrat walk.

If anyone thinks Gingrich, Perry or Romney will be any different they are in deep deep denial. For God’s sake, what part of Pelosi’s public statement about having lots of dirt on Newt is not believable? She owns him. It is the aeason she and Newt sat on a love seat, knee to knee, and extolled the global warming scam.

The other day Romney said The Usurping Marxist Onada is not a socialist. Huh? Oh, and let’s just pretend there is no such thing as Romneycare. A failed Romneycare.

As for Perry, I wouldn’t trust him with my wallet. I sure as hell wouldn’t trust him to get Americans working again. He seems to be just fine with millions of illegals taking American jobs. Why would I trust him as my president?

They aren’t accepting the Senate bill as written. They are adding language to address the implementation problem, which is why it has to go back to the Senate to be voted on.

That is absoluetly true. The left controls practilly all the media. it’s a huge obstacle.

as long as the left controls abc, nbc, cbs, newpapers and practilly all cable news, they will always win.

Agree in general but I suspect they “strategized” just fine, but in the end Boehner could not deliver. I don’t think McConnell is stupid enough to have sent over a proposal that nearly all Republican Senators voted for only to have it rejected by the House. He had the battle won, and useless Boehner booted it.

They need to WORK TOGETHER and GET THE JOB DONE which is not what is happening. They’re screwing the pooch!

We need the meanest, toughest, hardass SOB running the House, and we’ve got a wimp.

Turns out George Orwell was completely correvt.

And I’m glad that all those people who told me while growing up “It can’t happen in AMERICA!”, didn’t live to see this.

Now that they have agreed to defund Social Security, isn’t it time to abolish it altogether?

Oddly enough, the real losers here are young people. We’ll just keep blowing a hole in the (mythical) Social Security Trust Fund, with this ‘tax cut,’ which is not stimulative at all, so unlike an income tax cut, won’t be offset by gross tax revenue increases fueled by growth. I would say seniors would lose, but we know that no one in DC will offend that high-propensity voting block, so it’s young people out there in the work force or who are still in high school who will ultiumately get stuck with the bill on this. Just add it to the pile that is our national debt and keep whistling past the graveyard.

Sorry Polly Anna, McConnell was forcing the issue in the face of the Tea Party and looks like he won. What I don't understand is how this can go UC, I mean, all it takes is one tea party member to vote no?? Something is not right here.
