I have seen a lot of other commentators bring up versions of this point, but there is a reason why Republicans, especially conservative Republicans, see Newt Gingrich as by far their most qualified nominee and why they have been willing so far to excuse his periodic lapses from conservative orthodoxy. The reason is simply that under Mr. Gingrichs Congressional leadership, the Republican Party finally broke the New Deal coalition that had dominated American politics for more than a half-century, moving policy substantially to the right. That is a pretty impressive credential.

I see, so they reduced the budget and shut down government agencies?
*crickets*
His only ever accomplishment. Oh, BTW - don’t you all feel weird digging up a New York Times article to point to Newt’s conservative record?
Hehehehehehehe.....!
That Newt wants John Bolton at State is a good sign...
Pro amnasty...
Pro Individual mandate..
Pro global warming (he was for it before he was against it)
There is more.
Newt, while conservative on some things can easily be impeached on others.
100% behind Newt Gingrich:) absolute best man for the job and the man we would all love to watch debate Obama; and “Two hours after Im sworn in as President, and by the time Obama lands in Chicago, I will have forty percent of Obamas government dismantled. Newt Gingrich
Newt has the msm after him; Rove and Fox News after him, the other gop candidates attacking him..yet his poll numbers surge. American voters are sick of the attacks..especially by the gop candidates.
I heard Newt also wants to appoint Nancy Pelosi as his global warming czar, and Al Sharpton as his education czar. Newt is phoney as a three dollar bill and for the life of me I can’t understand why anybody supports the guy. Being a slick talker means nothing when you have no core beliefs.
That’s funny.
I thought the New Deal coalition was broken by Barry Goldwater in 1964.
Make that Newt has a good record.
Romney has only four years as Governor to judge him on as a political leader.
Newt understands the dynamics of Washington which is needed to make radical changes.
Only conservative Christians care about this marriages and polls show they are rallying behind him, knowing that he has repented and is a different man. The middle voters might actually like the fact that he has a flawed past and is human like them.
With Newt at the nominee we are going to cream Obama.
Since when has welfare been eliminated? Google “Swipe Yo EBT.”
“digging up a New York Times “
The NYTs tosses in a few conservatives (rarely) so that the can claim to be unbiased. Still, what in the article don’t you agree with I wonder?
Newt Gingrich Ping!
From the linked article:
According to Gallup, he has the support of the conservative Republican base and the tea party supporters:
Romney has the support of the establishment elite and shares the moderate/liberal RINO vote:. Source:

Yes, they took the Republican majority for the first time in 40 years, reduced the deficit, cut taxes, balanced the federal budget, blocked HillaryCare, reformed welfare, fought Clinton tooth and nail and encouraged the Reagan economy to soar. Not a bad conservative record at all. We could use some of this today!
Newt voted to create the Department of Education. Newt railed against Ryan plan. Newt supports Cap&Trade. Newt supports GSEs. Newt is in favor of payroll tax cut (temporary) because of Bush tax cuts for the rich. Newt supports “core” of Obamacare (individual mandate. Newt is a madman.
I don’t need to read NYT for my news on Newt.
What's your point?
The story a pretty solid opinion piece with a fair assessment of history.
“Pro amnasty...
Pro Individual mandate..
Pro global warming (he was for it before he was against it)”
Hmmm. He has a plan to solve illegal immigration that is rational and workable. This is a practical leadership, hardly “amnesty”.
He toyed with the idea of an individual mandate for health insurance, but never proposed legislation and only offered it as a thought experiment.
He has written that global warming is man-made in the past, but offered market solutions (instead of big government take overs) which is a brilliant way of creating stifling the socialists and uniting the country on the environment in a way that doesn’t hurt the economy. He voted against cap and trade.
There is nothing wrong with someone changing views on a complex issue. Many people were mislead about this 15 years ago. He now has the correct position.
“...shut down gov’t agencies...”
What are you? 12?
The House wouldn’t give Clinton the money he wanted, so CLINTON chose what to shut down!
Typical liberal crap...Shut down the most visible and critical departments and blame those trying to control gov’t spending for the inconvenience.
As though there was no waste or excess to be stopped.
