~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~
~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~
On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack. Information from here...LOTS of pictures

WOW! What an awesome story. Thanks for that.
I remember when we had 5&10s. My mother took us there often. I even remember Woolworth's with the eat-in counters. It would be wonderful if we had more stores with that same ambiance.
Did your stepfather go to war? Did he survive?
I have read about the metal drives, and the women going to work in the factories while the men went overseas, and the air raid drills. Too bad there wasn't something like this when 9/11 happened.
I know it was a different mindset then but I think we have had the same with 9/11. So many people ran to enlist, whether military or Homeland Security or ???
Thanks again for sharing that.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Am still catching up on this thread....big news when Newt announced he’d appoint John Bolten for Sec. of State. The internet is ‘hot’ with it. Many moving to Newt’s court on that alone and an indication possibly that Newt’s going to have quite the force to deal with....he’s pushing all the buttons....
Reminds me of an Admiral going to war...like or not how he intends to fight the enemy or who he’s sleeping with...we’re going to war against the Obama machine and we’re either going to get on board armed and ready or we need to resign our posts.
Newt’s past mis-steps are becoming mute in light of his agenda and plans clearly laid out there now to reveal Obama and to get this nation back on track.

Wen they started to move from VHS to DVD I found many movies and at the time was interested in learning more about Pearl harbor since the re-make of the movie Pearl Harbor was now in my possession.
As I went along I found the original movie and from then on found “Midway” and others about how things went in both wars. That does get you hooked....and so my library has increased accoringly.

Yes Candor I can understand your feelings on this...they were brutal beyond apprehension....some of the stories that came back would chill anyones bones. Reminds me of the muslims nations today. What we see in the news is nothing to what they do underground.

For those who haven’t much knowledge of the day they attacked Pearl Harbor....this clip, from the newer movie of the bombing, sheds a light on understanding the travesty that day....vets said when they viewed this that it pretty much showed how it was.
Not for the squimish....and there are others on line which show other clips.

A stunning chain of events...so many military, and civilian, lives lost, as well as all the equipment. And the USS Ward had to wait years for vindication of their sub hit.

Yes— my Step-Father went off to Europe and became a driver who delivered supplies during the Battle of the Bulge. He was one of the lucky ones, and came home. I remember him talking about driving like crazy, on unknown roads with no headlights, and chickens crossing the road at the same time.
