A plane crashed in Arizona's Superstition Mountains, according to ABC News Phoenix affiliate KNXV, citing witnesses and local authorities -- but officials told ABC News that passenger flights at major local airports all were accounted for.
It was not immediately clear how big a plane may have crashed or how many people were involved.
Dark video transmitted from the scene appeared to show glowing areas in the mountains, possibly fires.
Witnesses said they saw the plane crash and flames erupt around 6:40 p.m. local time, KNXV reported.
"What we saw was a small plane," said Mark Klein, who lives at the base

It’s been awhile. My last home out there was between Coolidge and Casa Grande in the desert. The southern access point off hwy 60 is what I was thinking of.
We can only hope.
I don't mean to seem petty, but do you imagine they would or could do otherwise? That is to say, if they were even aware of the crash - planes don't have rear view mirrors. And ordinarily aircraft in flight don't have any ability to stop and offer assistance in any case.
Reporting no survivors. pray.
I just watched that on abc 15 website and was looking for the YouTube link. Thanks FRiend! That was a pretty good sized aircraft with a heck of an explosion. Prayers for the souls on board.
KSAZ just said that they are finding boxes of peanut brittle at the scene, and that there were children on board. Pilot was apparently bringing his children to purchase cacti to bring to his mother-in-laws house in Chandler.
Chandler has an airport community where houses have hangars and their private runway. I think it is off Chandler BLVD.
Yep, 60 east valley heading towards Globe, AZ...I live a short distance from the turnoff to Idaho Rd which is the best access to the Superstitions from the west facing side of the mountain...It’s on the Flat Iron which is infamous for hiking..was up there last year and about killed myself doing it.was up there two days ago and was planning on doing the Flat Iron this weekend...guess not now! Pray!
I understand that but the flash the explosion gave off would have been apparent as an explosion over a large area as evidenced by the video which was shot from a longer distance than the two aircraft were from each other. I had no intention to suggest anything other than the irony of two aircraft traveling at the same speed in the same direction in a comparative close proximity as though they may have been traveling together.
FOX 10 in Phoenix just said it was a twin engine that had just taken off.
That big explosion is just the camera’s sensor being overloaded. You can’t make any assessment about the size of the plan from that alone.
That was it. I hiked that trail back in ‘89 in June! Yikes!
I have at least 3 books on the Lost Dutchman to include the classic from Sims Ely. What a fascinating and dangerous place. While this story brings back old memories, it is a very rugged place and this will be difficult to get information until daylight.
I send my prayers to the victims and family of this terrible crash.
I once talked to a reporter after I witnessed a truck run into a parked VW van on Interstate 5. I said that there was a loud crash as the truck pushed the van down the freeway, both enclosed in a "ball of flames". The newspaper reported my name as "John" and quoted me as saying that I saw "great balls of fire". I got the impression that the reporter was drunk.
