A plane crashed in Arizona's Superstition Mountains, according to ABC News Phoenix affiliate KNXV, citing witnesses and local authorities -- but officials told ABC News that passenger flights at major local airports all were accounted for.
It was not immediately clear how big a plane may have crashed or how many people were involved.
Dark video transmitted from the scene appeared to show glowing areas in the mountains, possibly fires.
Witnesses said they saw the plane crash and flames erupt around 6:40 p.m. local time, KNXV reported.
"What we saw was a small plane," said Mark Klein, who lives at the base

of the Superstition Mountains, according to ABC News Radio. “It only had the red and green lights on the wings on, and it just ran into the mountain. I looked, like fireworks and then a big explosion.”
A video posted on YouTube purported to capture the plane crash. It showed lights moving in the darkness and then a flash in the distance. It’s authenticity could not be immediately confirmed.
The Federal Aviation Administration initially said it had no reports of a plane crash in the area.

Nothing like interviewing illiterates.
Seems to be a lot of flaming wreckage for a “small plane”.

Apache Junction, Superstition Mountains and Canyon Lake. Memories of many great long weekends away from Ft. Huachuca. One of my most favorite places on this rock.
I have a full video taped by my Mom in the truck taking the Apache Trail going up across the Mogollon and back down into Mesa. It is 20 years old and very cool.
This accident sounds like it near Peralta Way which is a convenience path into the Range.
Great weather..spectators say they saw the plane break up before crash...elevation of crash approx 4800...crash site fire can be seen from Queen Creek, AZ..This is my hiking grounds...The Flat Iron of the Supers is approx 4800 ft. You don’t want to be there after dark. Treacherous.
In the video there was another aircraft just above and ahead of the one that crashed. The other kept going as if nothing had happened.
Peralta Trail is on the opposite side...it is right on the Flat Iron area of the Supers..Check online for a map of Superstition Trails.
I have family that lived in Superior, AZ. Rugged, but beautiful country.
Plane has ties to Falcon Field and Mesa Gateway. ERJ 135..Mesa Gateway is a military training base and also a commercial flight hub.
All flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor are accounted for...this one most likely came from Mesa Gateway or Falcon Field.
