None of us can pretend to know what motivates Sarah Palin to do what she does. Sure, theres money. And attention. And more money and attention. But todays Palin op-ed goes in a different direction. Palin moves away from the pure cultural populism that has defined her since her run for the vice presidency and back toward the reformist populism that characterized her time as governor of Alaska. She turns her resentment away from cultural elites and focuses it on political elites of both parties, arguing sensibly! that being elected to Congress admits one to a veritable merry-go-round of special interest wealth and influence-peddling. She proposes reforms and even gives a shout-out to both the tea party and Occupy Wall Street movements:
No more sweetheart land deals with campaign contributors. No gifts of IPO shares. No trading of stocks related to committee assignments. No earmarks where the congressman receives a direct benefit. No accepting campaign contributions while Congress is in session. No lobbyists as family members, and no transitioning into a lobbying career after leaving office. No more revolving door, ever.
This call for real reform must transcend political parties. The grass-roots movements of the right and the left should embrace this. The tea partys mission has always been opposition to waste and crony capitalism, and the Occupy protesters must realize that Washington politicians have been Occupying Wall Street long before anyone pitched a tent in Zuccotti Park."
Whats surprising about this: Palin really is going it alone here. Among the major Republican presidential candidates and party establishment, and even tea party activists, this type of economic and good government populism barely exists....

Everybody here is worrying who would be POTUS in Jan 2013, the global economy may not survive beyond summer of 2012. Problem is EU banking system is facing liquidity problems as losses mount from sovereign default. US banks will get dragged down with them because of their leveraged exposure. Fed will keep printing or accept a stock market meltdown. Guns, food, water, gold and even a getaway plan should be on hand for what is to come. If Black Swan event occurs and people dump paper currencies for hard assets, hyperinflation no matter what currency you own because the central banks of the world printed too much. Read what happen in Mexico and Argentina when the gov closed the banks and reset the currency. Financial storm clouds are what we are heading into, and it is already too late for the middle class no matter who is POTUS.
Me too!
subversive?
That depends on your frame of reference.
Whether she ultimately acts subversively, depends upon the actions of the Republican Establishment. If they force a Romney nomination. She will be a subversive. Along with a lot of us.
Both parties are forewarned, the Tea Party is the essence of the US. It is not a political party, but it might destroy 2 of them.
When I think of Sarah Palin.... I imagine an ill equipped hunter trapped in an alder thicket being rushed by a bull moose. Click, click, click, (weapons malfunction.) Yeah, I’m smiling THAT much.
Conviction: spelled; S-A-R-A-H P-A-L-I-N.
Miss ya’ Sarah.
Not to sound alarmist, but I don’t actually think we are going to have an election come Nov. 2012....

I don’t think she’s reconsidering for this election, but I think she wants to get back into the political mainstream and will probably run for office in her new state or possibly for legislative office. That might position her for a future run.
Draft Sarah, massive write in movement is afoot.
“Not to sound alarmist, but I dont actually think we are going to have an election come Nov. 2012....”
If that’s the case, you should invest in Guillotine manufactures.
Oh well, someday...

Not far beyond the grave.
Actually just a couple of feet on the West side of it.
Here's a couple of feet before the grave...

In 2008, I formed a very small and inconsequential website for Gov. Palin- wegotsarah.com.. I dropped it in 2009, when it appeared that she was trying to forge a coalition of establishment Pubs, Hillary Clinton females and social conservatives. Politically, she was running away from her strength- and her intended coalition was never going to materialize. .
Before the Tea Party, there was the Palin Majority the populism defined in the subject article. But, the Palin Majority was a movement- and evidently, Gov. Palin decided that she did not want to lead that movement. Thats wholly understandable. Above, a poster referenced Huey Long- and that is quite apt. Gov. Palin had that type of appeal, but obviously, there are consequences for credibly leading the people against the entrenched vested interests.
Now that she doesnt represent a threat to any one, Gov. Palin writes about the sentiments that are embodied in the Palin Majority. Obviously, she knows (and always knew) where the country stands and what it wants to hear. But, for whatever her reasons, she decided not to take the lead.

Have you read Going Rogue? I am into the third chapter, second time around. It’s deeply affecting at times, and I find it hard to believe that any detractor could read her story, in her words, and not come away deeply ashamed. She is a principled fighter, and she is still fighting. Why don’t you stop dragging your f-ing feet and stand with her?
I believe that what it is- is it, as you have wisely summarized. Too bad. I think that there was a window of opportunity that could be exploited for the betterment of our nation... and yes, it would abstract a price from Sarah Palin and her family. Peace. Out.
