Washington (CNN) A new national survey of Republicans indicates that it's basically all tied up between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with Gingrich on the rise and businessman Herman Cain falling due to the sexual harassment allegations he's been facing the past two weeks.
According to a CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday, 24% of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say Romney is their most likely choice for their party's presidential nominee with Gingrich at 22%. Romney's two-point advantage is well within the survey's sampling error.
While the level of support has pretty much stayed the same for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, Gingrich has seen his support jump 14 points since October.
The poll also indicates that 14 percent back Cain, down 11 points from last month. Four women have alleged that Cain sexually harassed them during the late 1990s when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Cain denies the allegations.
"Cain is struggling with the charges of sexual harassment, and while most Republicans tend to dismiss those charges, roughly four in 10 Republicans think this is a serious matter and tend to believe the women who made those charges," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.
The survey indicates that only a bare majority of Republicans tend to believe Cain, and more than a third say he should end his presidential campaign. Among the general public, Cain has a bigger credibility problem - 50% of all Americans say they tend to believe the women and only a third say they believe Cain.
"Not surprisingly, there is a big gender gap on this matter - women say this is a serious matter and believe the women,

I really don’t believe this poll.
“independents who lean towards the GOP “
Stacking the deck - more lies. Independents don’t vote in primaries and CNN lies through its teeth.
Why?
Countdown until the “CAIN IS FINISHED HUR HUR HUR” trolls find this thread...
The character assasination bombs will be launched against Newt in 5 minutes.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Newt! but I would imagine the polls will be all over the place especially after Iowa and NH
Willard + NOOT = BEAT LIKE A DRUM BY OBAMA
And we should believe CNN because?
Predictable given the Cain, Perry fiascos of last week. Their stuff has been now digested and it was expected to show in the polls this week. Are these polls in cement? Maybe not, but Cain has peaked, and Perry is, at least right now, still toast.
This CNN push poll was already posted today. CNN has an agenda against conservatives. Who knew? Next.
People who want a conservative: 36%
People who want an establishment RINO: 24%
This is meaningless.
Cain has never led the CNN Poll.
Go see for yourself.
RE: Why?
Apparently the GOP voters are still mostly undecided as to who among this lot is the most electable/acceptable.
For the past few months, I notice the love affair and then the subsequent cooling with Bachmann, then Perry, then Cain and now Gingrich.
Whether we like it or not, Cain seems to have been hurt by the accusations, however false.
Gingrich seems to be getting a second look because he gives the impression of competence, confidence and knowledge compared to the rest of the field. The fact that he refuses to attack fellow candidates and isn’t afraid of taking the press to task seems to work to his advantage as well.
Romney OTOH can’t seem to get any upward momentum and is stuck in the same range for the longest time.
The main sure thing is this — barring a miracle, the following candidates WON’T get any surge at all — Santorum, Huntsman and Ron Paul. They might as well drop out.
” Independents dont vote in primaries and CNN lies through its teeth.” <<<
Pray tell how do you think Obummer got elected? It wasn’t with democrats, but Independents and mod Republicans.
Not even a bare majority EVER voted for x42, but that didn’t stop the MSM from fawning all over him and declaring he had a mandate to do Hillarycare.
Gingrich 28% Cain 25% Romney 18% Perry 6% Bachmann 5% Paul 5% Huntsman 3% Johnson 1% Santorum 1%
This will be two polls that put Gingrich on top.
Here’s a wild speculation. I label it as such, so people understand that I’m wildly speculating.
It seems that the Cain Supporters screwed up. They needed to attack all the other conservatives, and they were doing a really good job. But they came across as so negative, that they felt the needed to be kind to at least one other candidate.
So they chose to be nice to Gingrich, since he didn’t have a chance (a lot of candidates did the same thing with Cain, ignoring him and sayin great things about him when he was an also-ran, and it worked out badly for them).
And suddenly, Gingrich is shooting to the top. Now they realize their mistake, and you will see lots of anti-Gringrich stuff being posted.
But remember, Cain’s team’s response to the rediculous sexual harrassment claims was great, since his fundraising went up and he kept climbing in the polls.
Media has their narrative.
Romney’s number don’t move one damn inch, but in order to get rid of Cain, quick move Newt up.
And how many are dumb enough to buy this?
