The Vatican called on Monday for the establishment of a "global public authority" and a "central world bank" to rule over financial institutions that have become outdated and often ineffective in dealing fairly with crises.
A major document from the Vatican's Justice and Peace department should be music to the ears of the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrators and similar movements around the world who have protested against the economic downturn.
The 18-page document, "Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority," was at times very specific, calling, for example, for taxation measures on financial transactions.
"The economic and financial crisis which the world is going through calls everyone, individuals and peoples, to examine in depth the principles and the cultural and moral values at the basis of social coexistence," it said.
It condemned what it called "the idolatry of the market" as well as a "neo-liberal thinking" that it said looked exclusively at technical solutions to economic problems.
"In fact, the crisis has revealed behaviors like selfishness, collective greed and hoarding of goods on a great scale," it said, adding that world economics needed an "ethic of solidarity" among rich and poor nations.
"If no solutions are found to the various forms of injustice, the negative effects that will follow on the social, political and economic level will be destined to create a climate of growing hostility and even violence, and ultimately undermine the very foundations of democratic institutions, even the ones considered most solid," it said.
It called for the establishment of "a supranational authority" with worldwide scope and "universal jurisdiction" to guide economic policies and decisions.

the catholic church is an integral part of the new world order.
If you're going to argue, at least argue about reality rather than taking nonsense potshots.
Someone needs to tell the “Vatican” to stick to religion and leave global marxism to others.
Arrest the bankers, confiscate their wealth, accuse them of heresy, torture them until they confess and burn them at the stake.
It worked before.
I predict a 500 post thread on this one.
Not a pot-shot at Catholics, just a stamenet of belief that The Bible is sufficient as is:
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."
2 Timothy 3:16, 17
And therefore does not need any additional edicts or teachings from Rome.
You are free to believe anything you want, but the Word of God is good enough for me.
Hey Pope...who'll run it? Will it be a MISMANAGED as the CATHOLIC CHURCH???
I think we need an 'OCCUPY Vatican City' protesters, so they won't come up with LEFTIST IDEAS!!!
One reason why I became an EX-CATHOLIC!!
The Book of Revelation makes this very clear that this type of high authorities who contribute to the False Prophet and Anti-Christ. Worldwide authority such as financial, distribution, monetary, etc, is an attempt to start up that “one world religious system” that Revelation makes clear. If the Pope was a real Christian and understood Revelation, he would stay clear of this direction, and refrain from aiding and expediting the tools that the Anti-Christ and False Prophet will utilize.
RE: Vatican Calls for ‘Central World Bank’ ...... NOT!
That’s why I asked the question in Post #8 above.
I don’t consider anything OFFICIAL from the Vatican unless it has the stamp of approval from the Pope himself.
It is a pot-shot when you malign our faith and spread the much-disproved falsehood of our disregard for Sacred Scripture.
You are free to believe anything you want, but the Word of God is good enough for me.
I'm sincerely glad you hold Sacred Scripture in such high regard... so does the Church. We also believe the Bible is sufficient as it is. We are not adding to it... at least we haven't since the Church recognized the Canon of Scripture in the 4th Century. However, it must be read fully and in context. The Bible may be regarded as a love letter from Groom to Bride... and it is best understood under Her tutelage. Here are some things you may have overlooked...
Matt 23:2-3. The Scribes and Pharisees sat it Moses's seat and Christ affirmed that the Israelites should observe whatever they were bidden to observe. They were, however, not to do as their teachers did since they were hypocrites. Note here that Christ didn't say every house should have a Torah scroll and memorize it... they were to follow the teachings of the religious leaders given them by God... imperfect as the teachers were.
John 12:25. Not everything that Jesus said or did is recorded in Scripture... In fact, Acts 20:35 quotes a saying of Jesus not found in the Gospels.
In 1 Cor 11:2 St Paul notes that the Corinthians are to be commended for following the ordinances he gave them. Note here, though, that St Paul didn't come bringing Bible texts... he preached (1 Cor 15:1-2) and gave them Traditions both oral and by letter (2 Thess 2:15). St Peter goes so far as to tell us that God's eternal word equals the word that was preached to them. The Apostles weren't traveling Bible salesmen...
2 Peter 1:20. St Peter tells us that no prophecy is a matter of personal interpretation. Rather, St Paul's letters can be difficult to grasp and interpret (2 Peter 3:15-16). We were never meant to rely on our own personal interpretation of Scripture. Rather than denying the efficacy of the Papacy, such a view makes us all popes and means everyone's view is equally valid. There is no possibility of unity of faith (as Christ desired for us) in this model. In fact, the Epistles themselves are proof of this as they were written to conform the various churches to the Apostolic truth.
Therefore, God gave us His Church built by Christ for preaching the Word to the world. Most Protestants err in elevating one part of the truth to being the whole truth. We follow Sacred Scripture as the unchangeable Word of God. More importantly, though, we follow the Word of God made flesh in Jesus Christ. He never commanded His Apostles to write down His words for the faithful to memorize. He sent them to preach and baptize. What they brought were the Traditions taught them by Christ and what they taught, they taught from the authority given them as Apostles of Christ under the instruction of the Holy Spirit promised to reveal all things.
Here you find the authority of the Church in Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition (big "T", not little "t"... big "T" Tradition is that given by Christ Himself... and He didn't write it down) and the Magisterium (the teaching authority). As noted above in John 12:25... the Bible is not all-inclusive. It tells the story of our fall and redemption. Christ builds His Church (Matt 16:18) that we might come to know Him, Her Bridegroom, more fully.
This article that spawned this discussion is incomplete. One, it is single-sourced from one agency of the Vatican known for left-ward leaning policies and pronouncements and two, it quotes third-hand. I'll wait to hear official policies before I condemn the Church in this matter. On economic matters, Rerum Novarum is still a primary document and firmly condemns communism in all of its forms.
May God bless you.
Actually, the Church hasn't missed that. If you read Rerum Novarum, you will find that the Church fully understands the evil of Communism. That doesn't mean, though, that every member and every agency is on board. Rather than condemnation, the Church needs our prayers to fight through this evil time and remove the wolves in sheep's clothing in their midst. Communists haven't just infiltrated the political structures of the West...
The Church understood that "socialism, especially in its Marxist form, denies the rights and dignity of the individual" longer than you have existed.
From "Christian socialism - Wikipedia: Religious criticisms"
Socialism was strongly criticized in the 1878 papal encyclical Quod Apostolici Muneris by Pope Leo XIII. It was again denounced in the 1931 letter Quadragesimo Anno. Socialists were accused of attempting to overthrow all existing civil society, and Christian socialism was deemed to be an oxymoron because of this. Pius XI famously wrote at the time that "no one can be at the same time a good Catholic and a true socialist".
... and has no moral problem with euthanasia and abortion if it supposedly serves the collective good.
Have you seriously missed the Church's increasingly lonely stance against abortion and euthanasia (and same sex "marriage")?!
Bump...
...look up, for your redemption is nigh...
wonder what they’re going to do when 1/4 of the world’s population suddenly isn’t here...
They won’t notice..........
The problem with the Roman Catholic leadership:
“financial institutions that have become outdated and often ineffective in dealing fairly with crises”
Who gets to define “fairly”.
Sorry, it can’t be defined in such situations.
One man’s potAtoe is another man’s potAHtoe; and that is the same before a decision and after; in the current EU financial crisis. From one perspective or another, either the situation before a decision or the situation after a decision is “unfair”.
The only thing a Central-Central Bank would do would be to move the blame for decisions that are “unfair” from many that can blamed to one.
We usually call such entities dictatorial, not “better”.
There are a lot of good Catholics in America and a lot of good Catholics in FR so I won’t say what I’m thinking regarding the Vatican in this post.
Hint: it’s not nice.
