Preparations begin for ‘historic' Democratic convention

BURLINGTON – A key player working to put together the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte called next year’s event “rather historic.”

The last Democratic National Convention to be held in the South took place in Atlanta in 1988. Before that, it was in Miami in 1972, Kevin Monroe, deputy director of intergovernmental affairs and outreach for the Democratic National Convention Committee, told the Democratic Women of Alamance County gathering in Burlington Tuesday night.

Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1860 when it was in Charleston, S.C.

“The eyes of the world are on your city for a full week,” Monroe said. He said people will no longer have to put “North Carolina” after Charlotte. People will know where it is.

Efforts to get the convention in Charlotte were successful because of cooperation by both Democrats and Republicans, Monroe said. All Charlotte City Council members and congressional delegations – both Democrats and Republicans – signed letters of support, he said. Richard Vinroot, the former GOP mayor of the city and 2000 Republican gubernatorial nominee, is on the convention’s host committee, he said.

He gave credit to the late Susan Burgess, who was mayor pro-tem of Charlotte, who back in 2009 had the idea of making Charlotte the host city for the 2012 convention.

“It was Susan who really spearheaded that effort,” Monroe said.

Monroe said that politics and changing demographics played a big role in Charlotte getting the convention site.

“What makes North Carolina unique is that the election of ’08 meant a lot,” Monroe said.

“President Obama loves North Carolina, not just because the state went for him.” Monroe said. He then alluded to something Obama mentioned during his speech in North Carolina earlier in the day.

“He talked about how North Carolina holds a special place because of its unique hospitality, even for those who disagree with him politically,” Monroe said.

The area’s economy will benefit because of the convention, Monroe said. He suggested that businesses could get certified to be on the convention’s list for state delegations looking for restaurants and businesses to host functions during the convention.

He pointed potential volunteers and vendors to the convention’s website: www.charlottein2012.com

Rather Historic? Well, duh. The Marxist is bringing his Cirque du Soleil convention, and new form of slavery, to the site of the beginning of the Civil War. Ironic.

According to the 99 Percent Declaration, there is to be a national assembly/convention/whatever in Philly from July 4 through October.

Who knows it this will get off the ground. Nutter is torn. He sees $$$ for the Philly economy on one hand, but sees a potential law and order nightmare on the other.

Wonder how much media play an event like that in Philly would get. It would no doubt be MUCH more interesting than a scripted Dem convention.

Ah, yes, peace and harmony shall reign in NC.

The black panther thugs from DC will jive with the white racist unionists from the north. What could possibly go wrong? It will be a democrat party love-in.

Cue the rainbows and unicorns. Broadcast kibbles about the grounds. The kitties and puppies are here.

Especially if Bite-Me Biden is on stage. He seems to have lost his mind lately. Well, lost whatever mind he had.
