BURLINGTON A key player working to put together the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte called next years event rather historic.
The last Democratic National Convention to be held in the South took place in Atlanta in 1988. Before that, it was in Miami in 1972, Kevin Monroe, deputy director of intergovernmental affairs and outreach for the Democratic National Convention Committee, told the Democratic Women of Alamance County gathering in Burlington Tuesday night.
Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1860 when it was in Charleston, S.C.
The eyes of the world are on your city for a full week, Monroe said. He said people will no longer have to put North Carolina after Charlotte. People will know where it is.
Efforts to get the convention in Charlotte were successful because of cooperation by both Democrats and Republicans, Monroe said. All Charlotte City Council members and congressional delegations both Democrats and Republicans signed letters of support, he said. Richard Vinroot, the former GOP mayor of the city and 2000 Republican gubernatorial nominee, is on the conventions host committee, he said.
He gave credit to the late Susan Burgess, who was mayor pro-tem of Charlotte, who back in 2009 had the idea of making Charlotte the host city for the 2012 convention.
It was Susan who really spearheaded that effort, Monroe said.
Monroe said that politics and changing demographics played a big role in Charlotte getting the convention site.
What makes North Carolina unique is that the election of 08 meant a lot, Monroe said.
President Obama loves North Carolina, not just because the state went for him. Monroe said. He then alluded to something Obama mentioned during his speech in North Carolina earlier in the day.
He talked about how North Carolina holds a special place because of its unique hospitality, even for those who disagree with him politically, Monroe said.
The areas economy will benefit because of the convention, Monroe said. He suggested that businesses could get certified to be on the conventions list for state delegations looking for restaurants and businesses to host functions during the convention.
He pointed potential volunteers and vendors to the conventions website: www.charlottein2012.com
Maybe they can keynote Bev Perdue who can call for “historic” cancellation of Congressional elections
Charlotte = the East Coast version of a Berkeley wannabe.... =.=
I hope the historic DemocRAT convention is followed by a historic election- historic defeat, that is.
They better triple the styrofoam Roman columns for this one. Or have Bill Clinton walk 3 miles to the podium...cause their candidate is way past his sell-by date.
There’ll be a Chicago theme this year
Anyone recall the ‘68 convention in Chicago? Hoping it’ll be along those lines. It should be quite a brawl. Can’t wait.
ick
It will be historic when the first Black president of America is removed from office after one term, not because of the color of his skin but because of the lack of character in his heart.
Will the holding pens be co-ed?
Me thinks the OWS crowd will be turning on their own by then.
No, not “historic”; just “rather historic.” Whatever that means.
Gee, maybe they can get the terrorist wing of the "democratic party" to show up.
That is NOT a donkey.
It's a Jackass.
Actually it is quite historic. We have the first semi black full communist CIC who has managed to cow the public into not rising up and demanding his ouster prior to the next election. So in that regard, I would say yes, it is historic that he being allowed to participate in this convention.
What the he!!? I thought poverty and the poor was the theme for the Food Stamp President. How could he snub Detroit? Detroit epitomizes the Food Stamp President’s administration successes in making people poorer and more than doubling the Food Stamp empire.

I was in Atlanta for this one...
we had about 1,000 Christians ministering on the streets...
Bill Brights people were there, Open Door, and several other big ministeries...
We had a great week...
That was about the last Democrat conference where there were many delegates and their families dressed in their Sunday best...and acting nice..
The next conference in 1992 in NYC (Bill clinton) the delegates were a lot of homosexuals and other weirdly dressed people...who were nasty and abusive...
and few Christians were monistering on the streets...I got to pray for a guy with AIDS at that one...
