At two campaign rallies in Tennessee on Saturday night, the Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the countrys border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.
But by Sunday morning, in a dramatic change of tone, Mr. Cain, a former restaurant executive, said he was only kidding.
Thats a joke, Mr. Cain told the journalist David Gregory during an appearance on NBCs Meet the Press, where he was asked about the electrified fence. Thats not a serious plan. Ive also said America needs to get a sense of humor.
Mr. Cains attempt to pass off incendiary comments as nothing but a joke may take more effort, however. In making the initial remarks about an electrified fence killing illegal immigrants, Mr. Cain was detailed and repetitive. He did not introduce his thoughts as anything but serious commentary, beginning with the words, We have a crisis of illegal immigration.
And the crowds responded with cheers, not laughs.

Seems that way. One thing I wonder about is why aren’t they going after his children and grand children. We never hear anything about them.
One of the highlights of the left was to attack Sarah’s kids and family.
Bingo. You nailed it. Simply making a show of "closing the border" with fences, booted Feds, etc. will not solve the problem if powerful incentives exist for immigrants to come. Even if the border were hermetically sealed, that does nothing about the tens of millions of illegals already here, churning out anchor babies. Round them up and send them home. Start by demolishing any business which hires them; the word will go out in the community and hiring will drop dramatically.
>> But no, suddenly hes entitled to be president? President, for gosh sakes with zero experience or record.
I’ve got no problem with him reaching for the brass ring. He doesn’t have a history in politics, but he *does* have a solid track record *running things*. We haven’t done so well with lawyers and pols; maybe it’s time for a businessman who came up the “hard way”. Interestingly, Perry is one of those as well.
I do have a problem with *anointing* Cain in the Palin mold as the only true Conservative. There’s a lot about him that is unvetted, and some of what he says is gimmicky. I’m not a big fan of 9-9-9, for example.
However, given what I know now about the man, he’s on the short list of candidates I’d support enthusiastically, Perry being the other one.
And, come november, for me, it’s ANYONE BUT OBAMA!
FRegards
Actually, in the FOX debate, Perry said his perfect VP pick would be a Newt/Cain morph :-)
>>> But no, suddenly hes entitled to be president? President, for gosh sakes with zero experience or record. >>>
Your arguments are infuriating in their lack of depth. Who said “entitled?” And who says political experience is always a good thing? And is a full swath of the American experience not a good life experience for the role of number one citizen? Has electing folks with “experience” worked well lately?
Anyone who says Cain has “zero experience” is letting us know that they are simply part of the “government is everything” mindset problem.
Government desperately needs on thing badly: NON GOVERNMENT FOLKS TO COME IN AND CLEAN IT UP AND CLEAN IT OUT.
Exactly my thoughts
Hah, on the Sooners having to go down to beat Texas.
Well, they did it this year, but I’ll say this.
Their baseball team ain’t in the world series.
As Herman Cain, would say, ‘that’s a joke.’
Why are you shocked ?
Interesting because this doesn’t sync up with what I watched on TV where they said that’s how they smuggle weapons to the Palestinians.
Sure they find some but not all.
So if Perry was running against Obama, you’d pull the lever for Obama (or not vote at all)?
Simple yes-or-no question. I’m dying to know.
It is politically stupid to alienate the fastest growing demographic. I don’t like the level of hatred being shown to a specific group of people. History has shown how bad things happen when one group is targeted and dehumanized.
I still can’t wrap my brain at the fact that many here want to have a soviet style border complete with landmines. That is just nuts.
And you ducked the whole thing again and even inferred racism to boot.
Typical.
Yeah many are anti border security / pro-illegal immigration at all costs...sure makes you wonder what is at the heart of their agenda...
The same FReepers who pounced on Gov Purdue for saying we should cancel elections, then said she was joking... are now giving Cain a pass.
BS he was joking. He couldn’t stand by his claim/policy, so he backtracked. Thinks we’re stupid.
This guy is gonna embarrass our side time and again.
It is a can of worms that needed to be opened for a long time.
"I'd say half the respondents supported zapping anyone trying to illegally cross the Tex-Mex border."
"Some said if that doesn't work to use land mines. A few even suggested machine guns as an option."
And?? What's the problem?
heh... getting in the spirit of the Cain Joke Thread, I see.
“It is politically stupid to alienate the fastest growing demographic.”
Oh look...another one more concerned with political power than national security.
>> “Cain’s remarks showed what a loose canon he can be.” <<
.
Your remarks show that you have lost contact with reality on this subject.
Your Perry is nothing but a back-up Romney; face it.
He got quite upset about a rock. I remember it well. He said it was racist and had the nerve to insinuate that Perry was a racist.
He either didn’t look into the story or he didn’t care.
He said something like ‘for Perry to let the rock stand as long as it did made him question Perry’s blah, blah, blah.
If he didn’t check the story out, he’s ignorant. If he did and chose to ignore the facts, he’s devious.
It’s not a nice try if you succeed and I have just backed up my post. Now you try.
