Cain Says His Deadly Fence Plan Was 'a Joke'
The New York Times ^ | Sunday, October 16, 2011 | Susan Saulny

Posted on 10/16/2011 9:18:08 AM PDT by kristinn

At two campaign rallies in Tennessee on Saturday night, the Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.

But by Sunday morning, in a dramatic change of tone, Mr. Cain, a former restaurant executive, said he was only kidding.

“That’s a joke,” Mr. Cain told the journalist David Gregory during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he was asked about the electrified fence. “That’s not a serious plan. I’ve also said America needs to get a sense of humor.”

Mr. Cain’s attempt to pass off incendiary comments as nothing but a joke may take more effort, however. In making the initial remarks about an electrified fence killing illegal immigrants, Mr. Cain was detailed and repetitive. He did not introduce his thoughts as anything but serious commentary, beginning with the words, “We have a crisis of illegal immigration.”

And the crowds responded with cheers, not laughs.

“One thing is certain, Cain just lost the hispanic vote with his “joke”.”

Most Hispanics that I know want secure borders...

"Wow, you’re really a fart smeller! Oops, sorry, I meant “smart feller”."

I have not heard that one since 5th grade.

Obviously the level of your replies correspond with your mental apptitude. A product of the public school system, I assume.

You must be a typical Perry supporter.

Cain should know better that to joke about stuff like that.

I still think a minefield with concertina wire obstacles would work better.

“Yep! I’ve worked for 30 years trying to convince people that conservatives weren’t bloodthirsty xenophobes. My mistake.”

LOL, and soon one of us will be running the nation.

I’m sure a system could be put in place to make it work—if we wanted to.

For example. Make it a triple fence. Outer fence you have to climb before you get to the zappy fence. And the zappy fence gets progressively more zappy as you climb it. Also say we are protecting the mexicans from trying to cross the border and dying in the desert. So we are doing this to encourage them to come in legally.

But I wonder if that will really solve the problem as they can just tunnel under it. We’d need to get some ground listening devices to find the tunnels, but I doubt they work very well as tunnels go unnoticed on the Israeli border.

You’re not one of his supporters.

kristinn, that was such an awful thread. It depresses me to think about the really horrible comments made by some freepers.

I really wish Jim would just remove the whole thread.

I think some of the people who wake up sober this morning may be a little ashamed of stuff they said.

Or maybe not.

To clarify, some of Perry’s supporters’ continued stupidity bothers me more than the remark he made IMO.

Oct 6, 2011 Interviewing Rick Perry On Illegal Immigration [10 Questions and Answers] --- no "jokes" [Perry has always agreed and supported fencing in urban areas where it works]

Answer #8) I have long been a proponent of strategic fencing because it is a critical component of border security, and it works when used in the right places.

I think what caused the hang up was that after it was passed, it was amended to give Homeland Security complete discretion on how, when and whether the fence ever gets built. Obviously with this president, that means it will never be completed.

If I’m elected, I will direct my Secretary of Homeland Security to expedite construction of strategic fencing along the border, especially in high traffic areas where manpower alone is insufficient to do the job.

But it’s important to remember that fencing is only one component of an overall border security strategy. A fence is only as secure as it is manned.

That’s why I would increase manpower on the border, starting with thousands of National Guard and border patrol agents, and I’d also make greater use of unmanned aerial vehicles to help gather real-time law enforcement intelligence.

We know for a fact that increased manpower is effective, because we’ve proved it in Texas with our $400 million border security effort.

Anyhoo, isn’t this a **Cain joke thread**?

He does when he has time and serious questions - when he interviews with Fox, or talk radio he goes into great detail. The leftist media tries trip him up constantly with gotcha questions so he has to be on the defense the minute he walks in there and he typically has only a few seconds to respond before they jump to the next topic. They rarely let him elaborate.

I know this because I have watched every interview Cain has done since he entered the race.

Actually, the Israelis discover the tunnels as they’re being dug. When the time is right they go out and collapse the tunnels.

“I don’t want to see some poor Mexican woman that just wants to get her kids away from a place where decapitated torsos are routinely hung from bridges and the like - see one of her kids get electricuted AND THEN HEARTLESSLY SAY SHE DESERVES IT.”

As long as you SEEM FINE with the hundreds of deaths each year in the desert, then I can’t handle you HATRED of Hispanics either. So, I guess we’re even then.

Oh, yeah. This is so bogus. He meant it when he advanced the plan. He was totally into it.

Now, on a main stream talk show, he’s telling us to get a sense of humor.

The more he talks, the less I like him.

He has a really nasty side.

What if someone said let’s send all the blacks back to Africa and then smugly announced he was joking.

Not so funny then, Cain, huh. And you got all upset about a rock. Where was that great sense of humor then?

Some xenophobes love the smell of ozone and burning corpses hanging from electrified fences, it smells like heartless victory. Anyone but Perry ‘12.

You are not one of the folks I was referring to. As I’ve said, I like Cain and Perry and hope one of them gets the nomination. Some of the Perry Bots (as opposed to reasonable supporters) are hurting his cause with their posts in my opinion.

Perry’s problem is not Cain or even Romney. He should play to his strengths, which he might be doing with his energy plan.

“Even worse, I suspect that much of this dislike is for southerners in general and Texas in particular (at least one Freeper has remarked how happy she is that she doesn’t have to live in Texas—and I’m sure the feeling is mutual). Sometimes I think the civil war is about to be fought all over again.”

You’d be surprised what A LOT of Republicans who live in Texas, beginning with me, think of Perry. So it is NOT a North/South issue...unless you’re one of the Northeast Establishment Types.
