Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the countrys border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally...
Mr. Cain added that he also would consider using military troops with real guns and real bullets on the border to stop illegal immigration.
The remarks were among the most pointed yet by Mr. Cain about illegal immigration, and they come as he is enjoying a surge in national political polls on the back of his victory in a recent Florida straw poll..
It is not the first time that Mr. Cain has floated the idea of an electrified fence. He has told the story many times of a caller to his former radio show who chastised him for talking about building a border fence, saying that such an idea was impractical.
Its going to be 20 feet high. Its going to have barbed wire on the top. Its going to be electrified. And theres going to be a sign on the other side saying, It will kill you Warning. At an earlier rally, on the campus of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tenn., he added that the sign would be written in English and in Spanish.
This nation has always been a nation with wide open doors, Mr. Cain said at the second rally. We want to make it easy for people to come through the front door. And were going to shut off the back door so you dont have to sneak into America.

At least he doesn't think aviation assets should be "in the ground" like Ricky Ricardo Perry does...sheesh....
Have you ever actually been down to the American/Mexican border? Are you aware of what the Rio Grande is? The terrain? The fact there is TWO major lakes that are partly in TX and partly in Mexico??? there there is the equivalent of the Grand Canyon in a lot of the border area that isn’t fronted by rivers and lakes and that FARMERS use the rivers to water their cattle? Also, that a lot of the land along the border area is private land? People scream about the so-called stealing of land to build a highway through TX that was never built — well this would be the biggest land steal in American history!
No I was addressing the claim that fenced don't work...and you knew that...
At least I know that a vote for Perry is a vote for Perry.
Everyone else in the race seems to be jonesin’ for Romney.
Perry has called for building fences in areas that can be fenced and using drones in areas that cannot be fenced, give that the border patrol cannot even get to many border areas themselves by car, the drones are an excellent idea IMHO. I find it amazing that people who are so clueless about this border can say hell yeah mine the border or electrify the border or build a fence, etc... where we DO have fences on the border Mexicans dig under them from houses on one side of the border into houses on the other side of the border and then use them without any fear of being caught..... or they back their trucks up to the fences and the people climb ladders and drop over the fences — and BTW the fences have razor wire like prisons, it does no good!
Yes I have ...and no one is proposing a fence along the ENTIRE border ...but then you knew that...
“Cain stepped in a big turd here.
Not just once, Not just twice.”
We’ll just have to find out. So far all his screw ups have put him at the top of the pack. And here, it’s just a bunch of Perry supporter trying to tear him down. So I’m not hearing anything useful yet.
We’ll see how Cain’s ‘heartless’ plans go over in the next round of polls...something tells me just fine.
Actually,I don’t think the majority of Americans will support and electrified fence. In the past, extreme measures were supported. But I don’t see that to be the case today.
Believe me, we do not talk the same language at all.
In fact..this whole moats, alligators, bombs, electrify them thread makes me sad..so I must refrain from any further response..
You really don’t do Mr. Cain any favor.
What in the world is going on Free Republic with this kind of talk?
The ignorance displayed on this thread tonite would keep me awake if I thought about it.
It’s discouraging to see so many foolish, clueless people and so many mean, hateful posts.
Oh, well.
Oh and don't forget "heartless" too...:oP
Cain wants to electrify the border........ that is dumber than the people saying fence the entire border... and shows extreme ignorance on his part... he is a glib talker, but the people falling all over themselves to cannonize him frankly are scaring the hell out of me.... he is no way ready to be president.
Saying that some critics have told him that his remarks about building a fence are insensitive, Mr. Cain said that the fault lies with the actions of some illegal immigrants.
Its insensitive for them to be killing our citizens, killing our border agents, he said. Thats whats insensitive. And that mess has to stop.
The guy is getting to be a loose cannon. I got those quotes from the original NYT blog. I await Mr Cains Clarification on the matter. I saw the video and heard the audio where he talked about it. This chuckle head thinks he is above reprisal.
Then based on your very sick idea may be some Vigilante lunatics can go to the borders and machine gun a dozen of illegal immigrants and then the illegal immigration problem would be solved. This insanity folks and this is very anti-American. Shame on all those who are advocating this lunacy and shame on the TALKER Cain for throwing insane and irresponsible statements to appease his RED MEAT crowds/CARAZIES followers.
I’m with you, I cannot believe how everyone bailed from being all Palin all the time to falling all over Herman Cain... this country is falling apart and I do not want to trust it to someone with no demonstrable experience governing and who keeps making some very stupid statements.
“Perry is not the one who dreamed up the TTC. It was presented to him by the Tx-Dot.”
I lived in Houston then, which is, I believe Texas, and he SURE AS HELL took ownership of it and bragged and bragged about it. I remember these things, because I was probably the only Texan paying attention. If he didn’t really believe in it, as you’re attempting to imply, it wouldn’t have lasted over half a decade.
As to whether it was ever implemented...that means NOTHING regarding how STUPID it was to ever leave Perry’s desk.
“The Trans-Texas Corridor never happened - Perry put a stop to it.” In 2010...as he was facing some primary challengers. Up to then HE COULD CARE LESS what Texans thought.
“To this day, the handful of legislators in attendance at that meeting have respected Rick Perrya man who was confident, honest, and exhibited absolute integrity to his citizens...”
Your credibility is starting to stretch here.
“You may be giving this particular individual too much credit.”
Good point, he may bat for the other team.
I find people who for 'profit' of cheap labor willing to diminish my security and compromise my vote as a citizen NOT fit to be president.
“Only Perry can bulldoze zero. Thus I am Perry now.”
Actually about all Perry can do is get Romney nominated at this point. He simply will not be forgiven about his heartless comment, and his debating is pathetic.
I think Cain has really jumped the shark on this one, probably because he has advisors who read FR and assume from the more violent posters that the main concern of the entire country at this moment is keeping Mexicans away.
People who are extremely anti-immigration are very extreme about it and say really appalling things that I have a hard time believing any real conservative would say (and frankly, I think some of the more hate-filled posters are probably Dem agents provocateurs, because there are a lot of names I never ever see post on any other threads). They have managed to portray Perry as pro-open borders, whatever that means, and Cain is responding to this.
However, even from a political point of view, this shows that Cain is just winging it. He is saying whatever he thinks will serve to destroy Perry ... but he seems to be unaware of the fact that just 4% of the electorate indicates immigration (of any kind) as their main concern. So I think Cain is playing to an imaginary base, and in doing so, is revealing his game.
It's extreme to consider attraction to tough border talk as cannonizing...I don't want my president speaking to and trying to get the approval of a blantantly racist organization like LaRaza...now THAT scares the hell out of ME...
