WASHINGTON U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., called on House Democrats Tuesday at a closed Democratic Caucus meeting to approve a resolution critical of Texas Gov. Rick Perry for not having removed a racially offensive slur from a rock at his familys hunting camp.
The racially charged name of the site, "N head," was first reported in a Washington Post story Sunday.
The Perry presidential campaign disputed the account and said the rock with the offensive word at the entrance of the leased hunting area in Throckmorton County, Texas, had been painted over at Perrys instruction in the early 1980s. The Post story cited seven people who had seen it and said the word was visible, even after it was painted over with white paint, as recently as this summer.
Jackson circulated a draft resolution Tuesday among Democratic members that condemns Perry and calls on him and all other GOP candidates who havent apologized, to do so. A Democratic staffer made a copy of the draft resolution available to McClatchy Newspapers.
GOP candidate Herman Cain, who is African-American, was sharply critical of Perry on Sunday talk shows for being "insensitive" on race.
Jackson spokesman Frank Watkins said that the lawmaker, the son of activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, made a case for a privileged resolution on the House floor condemning the Texas governor for tolerating the offensive word.
"He felt all Americans were offended by this," said Watkins. "They listened very carefully. There was rapt attention."
Perry spokesman Mark Miner said of Jackson, "This sounds like nothing more than a political ploy by someone who doesnt have all the facts."

If you oppose this with enough contempt to forever shun Rick Perry, I can respect your opinion. However, please understand that 12 other states have the same policy, including the border states of New Mexico and California. And, each student must compete with sufficient test scores to qualify for admission - there is nothing "automatic" based on skin color. Each student pays their tuition - nothing is "free" or given away to them.
Jesse Jr. said he even called upon people in Hymietown to do it, and that he would cut off the balls of anyone who refused to obey him.
“This sounds like nothing more than a political ploy by someone who doesnt have all the facts.”
Well it was posted by the Washington Post.
If you don’t have any facts use the race card.
Jesse Jackson=racist
Of course, he DID get it removed ASAP, but that doesn’t keep the REAL racists from trying to make hay from this non-issue!
The Media have so ‘rigged’ the terms of the ‘debate’ that even a johnny-one-note like Jesse Jackson, Jr. can score a hit. This election is going to get really nasty if the Republican candidates don’t close ranks and collectively fight back against this kind of stuff. The Univision boycott was a good first start. But notice that the beneficiary of the unity was somebody NOT running for president (Rubio).
And thats real unpopular.
That makes a lot of sense. Obama is losing black support big time now, so perhaps his campaign injected this false storyline into the media as a means to gain some black votes, if only as votes AGAINST Perry.
It's hard to know exactly what the 'facts' are in this case. The only "hard truths" seem to clear Perry & his father of culpability (if that's the right word). But the report embellishes with "un-named sources" who are "troubled" by the situation. And let's be clear... the most that you can say is "Guilt by Association".
I am not a Perry-partisan, but this stuff has got to STOP!
So are you calling me a liar AND stupid now, rather than addressing my rather clear and straightforward assertion?
I suppose if there were a counter to it, you would have suggested one.
But you miss, perhaps purposely, my point.
Those other states don’t give instate tuition to illegals. By combining instate tuition with preferences for being Hispanic, illegals are getting preferences over legal white applicants. Illegals therefore are being given preference over a whole class of legal students.
(Oh and BTW, those qualifying test scores would be set higher if they were applied equally to all students.)
So, Jesse Jackson wants democrats to condemn Rick Perry for hunting at a hunting lease that had a ‘magically offensive rock’ back when Perry was a democrat? Is that about it?
This happened 25-30 years ago, depending on the source, the Perry family was not responsible for the naming of the facility or the painting of the name on the rock.
The family acted quickly to obliterate that painted name but somehow they must be ‘condemned.’
JJJ can’t make a case for his agenda and the way it has destroyed the black family, so racism allegations, even incredibly lame ones, are all that is left.
My momma always said the more your stir, bovine waste, the more it stinks, so why does the perry crowd keep stirring.
Kind of early to say that, given what happened to George Allen and Trent Lott (though they actually said things, no matter how silly, in comparison to Perry who has done and said NOTHING).
My guess is that few people in the Perry campaign are aware of the facts, so they are flailing. They got caught flat-footed, IOWs.
I could be wrong.
I would have counselled Perry to “leave it be”. Maybe detailed a senior staffer to brief the Media on factual details. But the candidate should not utter a word about it. Story dies in a week that way. It may yet.
And it was right about that same time that the White Congressional Caucus convened to condemn Jesse Jackson Jr for...Oh...wait...never mind.
That would be “RAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYCIST!”
Well - you are close -
In Texas - I think the rules for admission are based on High School class rank.
If you go to a minority/hispanic school =- pretty easy to come in top 25% - or whatever the magic cutoff point is.
Not FORMAL minority advantage - but an intentional mechanism to help lower performing minorities gain admission.
You were right to jump the comment - but Texas has some odd rules that - in practice - assist lower performing minorities.
I would have thought that with an African in the White House the Justice Brothers would be out of business...instead even Al (not so) Sharpton even has his own program on cable news.
