RICK PERRY'S AWFUL WEEKEND: Will He Be The Next GOP Candidate To Flame-Out?
Business Insider ^ | Sep. 25, 2011, | Staff

Texas Governor Rick Perry's once-surging campaign is on thin ice, after flailing in three debates and suffering defeats in two key-state straw polls.

Once limited to the opinion page of the Wall Street Journal or The Weekly Standard, concerns over Perry's electability are now very much in the mainstream.

In a major upset for the Perry campaign, former Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain won the Florida Presidency 5 Straw Poll by a 22-point margin — a race Perry heavily contested. Later Saturday, favorite son and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney blew away Perry in the Michigan Straw Poll by a surprising 34-point margin.

Many of his problems have been self-inflicted. Perry's debate performance has been inconsistent, at best — and surprisingly Perry decided to engage his opponents, rather than focus his criticism on Obama.

The substance of his answers has also drawn criticism — and parody — for his incoherent and controversial responses on foreign policy and immigration, respectively.

I think in order to get elected the GOP needs someone who is more :middle of the road". We need to get the Independents on board and having an "uber" conservative just isn't going to get it.

Tell me where that theory has ever succeeded. The GOP loses every time they go middle of the road. They win when they nominate a candidate that espouses conservative principles. We win when we run conservatives and they present a better alternative to the voters. You want a Dole or McCain We like Reagans and the 2000 version of GWB. They win every time it is tried. Look at Bush 41....he won in a landslide on Reagan's coatails and then got crushed when he was moderating with tax increases and 'working with Democrats'.

Never fall for this line. We need a candidate that moves the center to us, not that moves to the mushy center.

Big deal! Straw polls are meaningless

Your own candidate said exactly the opposite yesterday.

Just wondering, they always refer to Cain as “former Godfathers Pizza CEO”

It's as if the lamestream media thinks that this marginalizes him in some way. As if to say "Oh, he just ran a chain of pizza parlors" so that people will wonder if he's presidential material. Of course that's only part of the story. Cain was made CEO and President of Godfather's by parent company Pillsbury to turn the franchise around, which was floundering. In just over a year, Cain returned the chain to profitability. This was AFTER Pillsbury put him in charge of 400 Burger Kings in the Philadelphia area which was the least profitable region in the BK chain. Within 3 years, Cain had turned them into the MOST profitable BK chain in the country.

All of this is just scratching the surface of Cain's lifetime achievement. Read his biography if you are not familiar with it, you will be amazed at what he has achieved. He'd done much, much more than run a chain of pizza parlors.

"I know you are but what am I"

Really? That sort of childish response is what you Perry supporters are now reduced to? I sorry the facts hurts your feelings but childishly refusing to address the facts about Perry will not help you make your case.

If the Perry camp cannot handle the heat of a Primary any better then this, they are going to utterly implode in a General Election.

Has Perry run out of money yet? That’s what matters.

If Perry can't manage to stop putting his big feet into his big mouth all the money in the world won't be able to help him in the voting booth.

Unless Palin decides to jump in and split the conservative votes between her and Cain giving Romney the nomination.

You honestly believe that Cain has as much grass roots support as Sarah Palin does? Well, ok, but don't put good money on that bet.

If Palin gets in, it will become utter havoc and Romney will take the nomination.

I'm so loving this. The mortal terror of the PDS afflicted is becoming palpable....LOL

Add to Perry's loss column yesterday's shellacking he took in Michigan. Romney won that with huge margins. Perry spent a lot of time in the ground in Michigan, and still lost.

Perry's 17 percent to Romney's 51 percent. Cain had a good showing in 3rd place at 9 percent.

They would make an excellent team. Of course, the sleazeball left will say Sarah chose Cain as a running mate because she "has a fetish for black men."

Let them. The good people of this country are beginning to think as highly of the leftstream press, as they think of Obama.

Nothing they've ever thrown at her has stuck. Every one of the junk lawsuits the left filed against her when she was Governor were throw out, and they couldn't find a single scrap of dirt on her in her 24,000 emails.

The left has had their hair on fire about Sarah Palin since she first stepped foot on the national stage, precisely because they know that she is one conservative who can't be taken down with their usual underhanded methods.

Out of all the heavy hitters on the national stage, they know that she is the ONE Republican who is determined to dismantle their socialist dream castle - and who has the ability to actually accomplish it.

They fear no one as much as they fear her.

"It's way too early to make the claim that Perry is ruined."

True, but he will be in real trouble if he does not right his ship soon. In the meantime, I appreciate Cain's ability to stay on message. Bachmann was my candidate but she panicked and went off message when Perry reversed her momentum and became an attack dog. Cain, on the other hand, has kept his focus on promoting a positive vision at a time when most of the other candidates are trying to sink each other.

Did you hear his staunch support of Israel during the debate?

That carries much more weight with the electorate than media screeching about Islamophobia.

Islamophobia isn’t an electoral issue.

You don’t vote AGAINST someone. You vote FOR your candidate.

If he resonates with the electorate it will be based on the next several months, not just one statement that he has made.

He is hitting back against Obama. Not everyone is doing that as well as he is.

His tax proposal has people taking notice, as well.

His campaign has much more sustaining power than others.

Watch Huntsman, Santorum, Bachmann, Paul, Gingrich fade away. Cain will still be standing, long after. He will drive the national discussion for the conservatives. He will help define the issues of conservatives as they battle for the nomination. He is a national force in this election. His presence will be noted.

There are many reasons to believe Perry is on the verge of tanking.

However, a Michigan straw poll isn’t one of them. RINO Romney was raised in Michigan. Romney’s father was governor of Michigan. Expecting Perry to win there would be like expecting Romney to win in a Texas straw poll.
