Sharp: Perry Will Win GOP Nomination (Faced Perry In 1998 Lieutenant Governor Race)
KSAT ^ | September 20, 2011 | Isis Romero,

SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry remains one of the front-runners for the Republican Presidential Nomination, and depending on who you ask, many think he'll get it.

John Sharp, the recently confirmed Chancellor of Texas A&M University who ran against Perry in the 1998 general election for Lieutenant Governor, gave his take on the race while visiting Texas A&M- San Antonio on Tuesday.

"It's a full time deal running against Rick Perry, and anybody who sells him short is an idiot, because it will be a tough campaign," Sharp said.

Sharp has known Perry since his college days, where the two served in the same outfit in the Corp Cadets. "We were really good friends until we ran against each other," Sharp said.

Sharp, a Democrat, lost to Perry with 48% of the vote, during the 1998 election. During that race, the polls were tied as voters got ready to cast their ballots. Then came the flood of 1998.

"In October of 1998 or late September, this huge flood came through the area, from San Marcos and down to Victoria," Sharp said. "That was my old senate district, (I'm from Victoria) and so I'm trying to get people to get out and vote, and they're out in boat, trying to rescue their furniture and things like that."

Sharp says his loss was partly due to Perry's good timing and good luck, and believes Perry will win the Republican nomination, but stopped short of saying he will be the next president.

From what I see, you are only bringing heat - and not shining any light whatsoever. I never start a food fight on this forum, but I will jump in and go as hard as anyone when engaged.

But throwing around the same two or three arguments and thinking you are strengthening them by getting madder and more vitriolic does not expand your argument.

I’m undecided on Perry, but I am mature enough to realize a few things: at his age and with his experience, he’s going to have more good and more bad than most. That’s just a fact of chronology. Another fact is that as a long time crusader against the Federal government, he has over reached as a state governor. That almost goes with the territory of being a states right type governor in the face of an expanding Federal government.

His good is this: he projects a great leadership image and he’s plain spoken and he’ll take it to Obama and liberalism and big government fearlessly.

Those are CRITICAL CRITICAL plusses in this election cycle. Yes, I get the gardicil issue and I am uneasy with some of his immigration stances. But I have also seen these issues blown up and misprepresented by his opponents - and that reeks of desperation.

Misrepresenting his border stance and using the most egregious language on the HPV vaccine - yet again and again - does not expand your argument.

>>> I’m here to take down any and all non-Conservative phonies who think they are owed or should be coronated with the Presidential nomination (or lesser office as the case may be)>>>

I”m all for exposing phonies - but I think you should consider a few things:
A: phonies versus imperfect conservatives is a legit issue, maybe you should think about that.
B: why are you so obsessed with who YOU think feels “owed.” How do you know?
C: Maybe you should work for good government within the imperfect realities of our system.

Think this: the best governing in your lifetime was during Reagan’s hey day. The next best governing was when Clinton was President but a very conservative congress pushed him to the right. That gave us net net good government (for the most part).

My point is this: There will almost certainly be the most conservative congress starting in 2013 than we’ve had since 95-96. Such a scenario will lead to much better governance than we have now with a Perry or even a Romney in the White House.

The only thing that will result in the same government, or worse government, is four more years of Obama. Keep your eye on the ball.

Sounds like the Hand of the Lord to me.

Team Obama need to file that away for future use as an excuse for their being escorted out of the White House at 12:01 p.m., January 20, 2013.

Interesting. I had not heard she quit the Governorship of Alaska... she did resign ahead of being willfully bankrupted by deranged haters in the liberal and political establishment with false and frivilous ethics charges. Have you some other sources/references ?

Great posts C.E.W.

I was going to say something less profound and memorable:

Like your candidate Sarah! did to Perry on Greta, you are now insinuating CW is something she is not.

You could be on to something. My wife thinks that Perry’s hair looks the same as Ronald Reagan. Since Rick announced, my wife does not show me as much interest as before. I will show her the article I saw on FR that said Perry was gay.

I did not think about “lust” until you mentioned it. Thanks. I’m not sure what to do? As the Field Marshal dj, you seem to have experience on these “romantic delusions”, what should I do?

You don’t agree with my arguments, what can I tell you ? Those arguments for which I remain strident are the bedrock as to why he must be opposed. From open borders/softness on illegals, the Trans-Texas Corridor, which by extension was going to provide a “main route” for untold millions of people from South of the Border (not just illegal Mexicans, but Central Americans, South Americans, and even others from Asia or the Middle East) into our country, which is a threat to our national security, right up to the examples of crony capitalism and his Gardasil order, which was an overreach of a single elected official and brings up questions of those backing him (Big Pharma).

We can sit here and have long-winded discussions back and forth, but eventually everything gets reduced to soundbytes, that’s just how it goes. In any event, I have no intention of changing my tactics. I already stated he should’ve been voluntarily or involuntarily retired as Governor 5 years ago because of mediocrity and failure to enact a solid, Conservative agenda. The only thing he’s been doing is attempting to keep himself in office perpetually as the Emperor of Texas, and I think that is shameful. A state like that deserves a helluva lot better.

Another issue I forgot to mention here is that when it comes election time, it’s amazing how liberals in both parties discover Conservatism and decide to “get tough”, especially galling when you realize it never quite matches the record. Like the old saying goes, if it ain’t gelling, it ain’t aspic.

I knew that was a tough election...but I didn’t remember it was a flood that knocked Sharpe out. ;o)

Yes, that too. But she doesn’t have the power to create a flood.

You can dish it out but can't take it.

It's ironic to say Sarah isn't for sale since all she has done is trademark her name and sell herself since she quit half way through an elected office.

Forgive me, I noticed you’ve only been here since 2010. If you’d been here for much longer, you’d see that I’ve been in the thick of primary battles, most notably going back to 2003 over the debacle of the CA Gubernatorial Primary. So how do I have this gift of discerning ? Because I’ve spent years on this subject to the exclusion of many others. Enough so that I was called a political historian by a former member of Congress. Simply because most people don’t have the time, the patience or even the interest with the subject, they come to me for a consultation or opinion. I’d put my record of discernment and “spotting the phony” against anyone else’s.

You make an interesting point about having a Conservative Congress, but that only gets you so far. Perry has a gargantuan majority in the TX legislature, but that hasn’t translated into sweeping Conservative reforms and initiatives. Indeed, they’ve been squandered. There are far better and more successful state Guvs than he, who have been tested under fire. Some who have barely been in office, such as Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Paul LePage of Maine. These are the kind of individuals (other than Palin) that show the kind of strength and success, and their individual stories (LePage’s especially) that would make an excellent President.

1998 Central Texas Flood

2001 Houston floods (Allison)

I'm read for the next dump of rain (but not those 20 or 40 inchers in one fell swoop!)

Perry’s hair is about where the comparisons end. Too bad it isn’t attached to a person of substance.
