President Obama's hometown newspaper has some startling advice for the commander-in-chief -- quit while you're behind.
Citing the president's record-low approval ratings and unease in the Democratic base, a Chicago Tribune editorial writer recommended over the weekend that Obama need not feel obligated to run for a second term.
Steve Chapman said that with Obama facing the prospect of a double-dip recession and, if he wins reelection, a gridlocked second term, it might be better to call it a presidency and let someone else -- maybe Hillary Clinton -- carry the Democratic mantle in the 2012 election.

Not unless, and until Barry is out of the picture. Ain't gonna happen - no way, no how.
Besides, Hillary doesn't want it, and there's no grass roots movement to draft her. I'd be surprised if she's not just chuckling to herself about all this speculation.
Remember that the Democrat base passed her over for the smooth talking, urbane, hipster Marxist. She gave up her Senate seat to challenge him, and wound up being his subordinate. She's not in a strong position to challenge him a second time, with those dynamics, and with few real accomplishments of her own over the last three years.
If she'd turned down the Secretary of State job, and begun building toward another run, she might have had a chance, but she chose to go to work for Obama instead. Not a smooth move, if you want to depose the man who beat you, four years hence.
Oh, I'm not laughing at the basic strategy. It's the only way that he can pass the torch to someone else and ensure the support of the majority of black voters.
That said, Oprah ain't a credible contender by any stretch of the imagination.
>> Not a smooth move, if you want to depose the man who beat you, four years hence.
The man that beat doesn’t exist anymore. He never existed. Obama’08 was a figment of people’s imagination, an icon that represented “Anyone But Bush” and some form of reparation for slavery and an image boost to the blacks.
Now, he’s an empty suit and everyone knows it. The Dems can’t admit it and that’s their problem. Many of them want to throw him away, but they have too much personal investment in the image of Obama’08.
The Palinistas say that Palin can enter the race in November and still have a chance (I disagree), so why can’t a “new” Democrat pop up at the same time to challenge Obama’12? I’m not saying it will happen or that I want to see a challenger show up. But it could happen as more and more Dems lose their jobs and the hopelessness caused by Obama’s policies continues to sap the Dem’s support for the fading image of Obama’08.
LBJ resigned in March, 1968.
Left plenty of time for a primary race. Even an assassination...
Who else do they have, though?
The 'Rats don't have a second string. Name a single Senator, Congressman or Governor with any kind of national appeal. Any kind of a record to run on.
There just aren't any.
If they somehow pry Obama and Michelle out of the White House, Hillary is the only option with any chance of winning. Anybody else would be an unknown -- and a sure loser.
>>LBJ resigned in March, 1968.
Apples and oranges. LBJ didn’t run against his primary challenger. But if Soros tells Obama to not run, he could pull an LBJ at any time next year and make room for another Dem.
The Dems are entrapped by their own case of terminal political correctness. None of them have the courage to stand up and mount a real challenge to Obama, lest they be condemned and ostracized by the faithful. They made their own hell, and can't escape it.
I expect we'll see some carping and criticisms from the left throughout the campaign, but I'd be surprised to see a real challenger emerge.
But hell - who knows? Conditions in this country could become so dire by next summer that rank and file Dems could be calling for impeachment. You know, they find their courage in mobs. If enough momentum to oust Obama builds up, who knows what'll happen?
Well, Eugene McCarthy ran against him in New Hampshire.
But the issue I was addressing was the calendar. How late could Obama dither before bowing out?
In which case, March has been proven sufficient.
bttt!
The 'Rats don't have a second string. Name a single Senator, Congressman or Governor with any kind of national appeal. Any kind of a record to run on. There just aren't any.
In early 2007, few, if any of us had ever heard of Barack Obama. He was a relative unknown who nonetheless managed to attract enough support to become a major contender, and win.
I don't watch the Democrats closely enough to have the faintest inkling of what sort of talent they might have on their bench.
But, I can't totally disagree with you. There just doesn't seem to be an ascendant Democrat in the wings who could unseat Obama for the nomination, so I suppose the speculation about Hillary running again is natural.
I still don't see it happening, though. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have so utterly demolished the Democrat brand, that it's going to take at least two presidential election cycles for it to heal. I don't even know that two election cycles is enough.
Given that reality, who in their right mind wants to sacrifice themselves on the alter of a destroyed party which has no chance of electing a president?
First Secretary of the Party never steps down voluntarily. The Party’s Central Committee has the option to remove the Secretary during its Plenum or Congress.
The rat basturds are all hoping that we might just forget who voted for obamacare. We KNOW who voted for it: they ALL did and we’re not forgetting that little shenanigan nor letting anyone else forget it either. Nov. 2012 is payback time!!!!
Actually, quite a few of us had heard of him. Remember his keynote address at the 2004 DNC convention. From that moment forward, the media was touting him as an eventual prsidential candidate.
Mario Cuomo might be the second stringer of choice, if Hillary opts out.
Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have so utterly demolished the Democrat brand, that it's going to take at least two presidential election cycles for it to heal. I don't even know that two election cycles is enough.
Wouldn't it be great if the remnants of the Democrat party dissolve into a liberal rump and a reform group. It's absolutely vital for the country, I believe, for the Democrat party to reform itself into a responsible, reasonable and non-corrupt party.
Because, one day, after twenty years without serious competition, the GOP will devolve into an irresponsible, unreasonable and corrupt party.
I agree with you. There may be a challenger for the primaries, but there is no way Obama is not the candidate.
I missed it. My family and business were in desperate straits for most of 2007, and I was sort of hit and miss on the forum.
I remember finding out later that Obama had been the keynote speaker at the 2004 Dem convention, which is what set him on the road to the White House. I also remember Biden's gaffe about him being a "clean, articulate black with no discernible accent". That's about the point where I became dimly aware of him.
Anyhow, my point is, the Dems might have an acceptable newcomer to challenge Obama, but again - who in their right mind would want to throw away any future chance at becoming president by sacrificing themselves for a party on life support?
There's no hope for the Dems. No matter who their eventual nominee is, they will not win in 2012. I think they're going to let Obama own this all by himself. When he goes down in flames, the Dems are going to pivot to burying the Obama-Pelosi-Reid era forever.
Preferably in an unmarked grave...
I heard once that it’s a good idea to bury such evil at sea so fellow travelers can’t build a shrine to it. Then they just stand at the shore looking outward into the horizon ;)
All righty then...
Or you can get raw with these strings. Either way, the violin is sweet yet lethal.
Do it!
LMAO... The kiss between Hillary and Obama looks more genuine than the ones I’ve seen Michelle give him! Wish I had the pic handy for the comparison!
Dick Cheney and Steve Chapman have motives, separate and distinct from one another, for signalling Hillary to run. Neither Cheney or Chapman are concerned with Hillary’s short term goals and want her to considered her long term goals.
Cheney doesn’t want the Republican Party to be remembered as the Party that drubbed the First African American President into oblivion during his re-election campaign. If Obama announced he was not seeking re-election, then it would allow Obama to retire gracefully and depart for a campaign of post-election success.
Chapman, an opinion writer from Chicago with a large Black Community following, wants Obama to end his Presidency gracefully, too. Chapman is signalling to Hillary the Black Community will be very appreciative if Hillary were to take one for the team and allow Obama to move on to a campaign of post-Presidency success.
The Hispanic Community, the community that supported Bush and Obama, will, again, be left on a political island wondering what happened. While the Hispanic Community wants Hillary to consider her options and do what is best because of her untiring support for Obama, the Black Community and the Republicans want Hillary to step up and protect Obama from defeat.
Time heals all wounds and I’m sure the Black Community and the Republicans will be very gracious and appreciative of Hillary for her sacrifice. Otherwise, there will be continuing questions of why she let the Republicans embarrass Obama. If she supports Obama, why didn’t she let Obama retire gracefully?
